Coastal New Particle Formation: A Review of the Current State-Of-The-Art
2005
Environmental Context.Atmospheric aerosols play an important role in determining the earth’s radiative budget, climate change and air quality levels. Much effort has been spent on quantifying the impact of aerosols on climate change; however, the largest gap in our knowledge relates to quantifying natural aerosol systems and the new particle formation process associated with these systems. The marine aerosol system is of particular interest due to the 70% ocean coverage of the earth’s surface. Coastal new particle formation events are though to be more frequent and of stronger intensity compared with open ocean events and thus have been studied in detail to identify possible processes lead…
Modeling of female human body shapes for apparel design based on cross mean sets
2014
This paper is concerned with a method to build prototypes of human bodies that can be used for apparel design. One of the most important issues in the apparel development process is to define a sizing system to provide a good fitting for the majority of the population. Since anthropometric measures do not present the same linear growth with size in each dimension, it is very important to find a prototype that represents as accurately as possible each class in the sizing system. In this paper we propose a method based on the concept of random compact mean set to define prototypes in apparel design. From a cloud of 3D points obtained with a 3D scanner a solid that represents the human body is…
Modeling Return to Education in Heterogeneous Populations: An Application to Italy
2019
The Mincer human capital earnings function is a regression model that relates individual’s earnings to schooling and experience. It has been used to explain individual behavior with respect to educational choices and to indicate productivity on a large number of countries and across many different demographic groups. However, recent empirical studies have shown that often the population of interest embed latent homogeneous subpopulations, with different returns to education across subpopulations, rendering a single Mincer’s regression inadequate. Moreover, whatever (concomitant) information is available about the nature of such a heterogeneity, it should be incorporated in an appropriate ma…
EMERGING PROPERTIES IN POPULATION DYNAMICS WITH DIFFERENT TIME SCALES
1995
The aim of this work is to show that at the population level, emerging properties may occur as a result of the coupling between the fast micro-dynamics and the slow macrodynamics. We studied a prey-predator system with different time scales in a heterogeneous environment. A fast time scale is associated to the migration process on spatial patches and a slow time scale is associated to the growth and the interactions between the species. Preys go on the spatial patches on which some resources are located and can be caught by the predators on them. The efficiency of the predators to catch preys is patch-dependent. Preys can be more easily caught on some spatial patches than others. Perturbat…
Drivers of CO2 emissions in the former Soviet Union: A country level IPAT analysis from 1990 to 2010
2013
There are a small number of countries that have managed to decrease emissions over the last two decades e most of them emerged from the FSU (former Soviet Union ). CO2 emissions for these countries combined have decreased by 35% between 1990 and 2010, while global emissions increased by 44%. Most studies investigate the FSU as a single block ignoring the significant and persistent diversity among countries in the region. This study is the first providing detailed country by country analyses determining factors for changes in post-Soviet republics by applying a disaggregated version of the commonly used (IPAT) index decomposition analysis including energy intensity, affluence industrializati…
The Level of Mortality in Insured Populations
2018
In the actuarial field, life tables are used in reserving and pricing processes. They are commonly built from aggregate data and incorporate margins as a prudent measure to ensure the insurance company’s viability. Solvency II requires insurance companies to calculate technical provisions using best-estimate assumptions for future experience (mortality, expenses, lapses, etc) to separate (i) the risk-free component from (ii) adverse deviation of claims. Nowadays, however, the methods used by insurance companies (in most countries, included Spain) do not guarantee that these components can be separated. Many companies build their own tables from general insured population life tables, assumi…
Variation in mortality among populations is higher for pymetrozine than for imidacloprid and spiromesifen inTrialeurodes vaporariorumin greenhouses i…
2014
BACKGROUND Insecticide resistance in Trialeurodes vaporariorum W. is unknown in the species' northern distribution range where it inhabits mainly commercial greenhouses. Resistance development in whiteflies feeding on year-round crops in greenhouses is possible owing to the use of chemical treatments to back up biocontrol. The authors tested the response levels to spiromesifen, pymetrozine and imidacloprid in whiteflies collected from seven greenhouses within a 35 km radius in western Finland. RESULTS All except one (PR) population had LC50 values below the recommended concentrations for the tested compounds. However, some populations showed reduced susceptibility to pymetrozine in comparis…
Bounded Rationality for “Just In Time” Education
2011
Abstract If you cannot get answers keep putting questions The paper has three targets: a) Taken per se , it advances the research presented in a series of seven papers about education in a post-industrial (i.e., service-oriented) society broadening the scope from engineering to any kind of education reachable through reachable through permanent endeavour. b) Regarded as part of a “EU 2020 research cluster” with the aim to pro pose affordable approaches to education for sustainable development, the paper reveals bounded rationality (BR) as common denominator of, mechanism for, and connection between the two facets of permanent education: e- teaching and e- learning , the research aiming to m…
”Siinäpä vasta loistoemäntä!” : perheenemännyys 1950-luvun Kotiliesi-lehtien mainosteksteissä
2018
Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma tarkastelee perheenemännyyden diskursseja sekä niihin liittyviä arvoja ja normeja 1950-luvun Kotiliesi-lehtien perheenemännille suunnatuissa mainoksissa. Tutkielman tavoitteena on ymmärtää viisikymmenluvun mainosdiskurssien konstruoimaa perheenemännyyttä ilmiönä. Lähihistoriaamme perheenemännyys on kuulunut olennaisena osana. Tästä huolimatta perheenemännyyden tutkimus on jäänyt marginaaliseksi Suomessa. Kahdesta tutkimuskysymyksestä ensimmäinen kartoitti perheenemännille suunnattujen mainosten konstruoimia perheenemännyyden diskursseja. Toinen tutkimuskysymys syvensi analyysiä diskursseissa tunnistettavissa olevien arvojen ja normien tarkasteluun. Tutkimusaineisto…
