Entanglement and heat capacity in a two-atom Bose–Hubbard model

2012

Abstract We show that a two-atom Bose–Hubbard model exhibits three different phases in the behavior of thermal entanglement in its parameter space. These phases are demonstrated to be traceable back to the existence of level crossings in the ground state of the same system. Significant similarities between the behaviors of thermal entanglement and heat capacity in the parameter space are brought to light thus allowing to interpret the occurrence and the meaning of all these three phases.

Electronic structure of the spin-12quantum magnet TiOCl

2005

We have studied the electronic structure of the spin-$1∕2$ quantum magnet TiOCl by polarization-dependent momentum-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. From that, we confirm the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the electronic structure along the crystallographic $b$ axis and find no evidence for sizable phonon-induced orbital fluctuations as the origin for the noncanonical phenomenology of the spin-Peierls transition in this compound. A comparison of the experimental data to our own $\mathrm{LDA}+\mathrm{U}$ and Hubbard model calculations reveals a striking lack of understanding regarding the quasi-one-dimensional electron dispersions in the normal state of this compound.

Radio Observations of the Hubble Deep Field South Region IV: Optical Properties of the Faint Radio Population

2008

The Australia Telescope Hubble Deep Field-South (ATHDFS) survey of the Hubble Deep Field South reaches sensitivities of ~10 miceoJyJy at 1.4, 2.5, 5.2 and 8.7 GHz, making the ATHDFS one of the deepest surveys ever performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Here we present the optical identifications of the ATHDFS radio sources using data from the literature. We find that ~66% of the radio sources have optical counterparts to I = 23.5 mag. Deep HST imaging of the area identifies a further 12% of radio sources. We present new spectroscopic observations for 98 of the radio sources, and supplement these spectroscopic redshifts with photometric ones calculated from 5-band optical imag…

New quantum Monte Carlo formulation for modeling trans-polyacetylene properties: specific heat calculation

2004

Abstract In this paper we propose a new hybridization scheme for numerical simulation based on the determinantal quantum Monte Carlo and analytical model to treat the vibration mode of one-dimensional trans -polyacetylene chain. We use both of the extended Hubbard model (EHM) and Peierls–Hubbard model to compute the specific heat for different assumptions. For both the two models, our results indicate that the behavior of the specific heat is characterized by a maximum. We also introduce the effect of dimerization through Peierls–Hubbard model. In this case it is found that the specific heat magnitude is slightly more important when compared to specific heat value found with the EHM case. M…

Quantum Monte-Carlo calculation of correlation functions of undistorted, cis-distorted and trans-distorted polyacene

2003

Abstract We have studied polyacene within the Hubbard model to explore the effect of electrons correlations on the bond–bond correlation as well as spin–spin correlation functions. We employ the determinantal quantum Monte-Carlo to resolve the microscopic Hamiltonian of this system which involves a nearest-neighbor electron hopping matrix element t , an on-site Coulomb repulsion U . The objective of this study is to understand the effect of electron–electron (e–e) correlations on the structural instability in polyacene. We find strong similarities between polyacene and polyacetylene. The system shows no tendency to destroy the imposed bond-alternation pattern. The spin–spin correlations sho…

Ground-state fidelity and bipartite entanglement in the Bose-Hubbard model.

2007

We analyze the quantum phase transition in the Bose-Hubbard model borrowing two tools from quantum-information theory, i.e. the ground-state fidelity and entanglement measures. We consider systems at unitary filling comprising up to 50 sites and show for the first time that a finite-size scaling analysis of these quantities provides excellent estimates for the quantum critical point. We conclude that fidelity is particularly suited for revealing a quantum phase transition and pinning down the critical point thereof, while the success of entanglement measures depends on the mechanisms governing the transition.

Connecting the data landscape of long-term ecological studies: the SPI-Birds data hub

2021

The integration and synthesis of the data in different areas of science is drastically slowed and hindered by a lack of standards and networking programmes. Long-term studies of individually marked animals are not an exception. These studies are especially important as instrumental for understanding evolutionary and eco-logical processes in the wild. Furthermore, their number and global distribution provides a unique opportunity to assess the generality of patterns and to address broad-scale global issues (e.g. climate change).

Urmylation and tRNA thiolation functions of ubiquitin-like Uba4·Urm1 systems are conserved from yeast to man

2015

AbstractThe ubiquitin-like protein Urm1 from budding yeast and its E1-like activator Uba4 have dual roles in protein urmylation and tRNA thiolation pathways. To study whether these are conserved among eukaryotes, we used gene shuffles to replace the yeast proteins by their human counterparts, hURM1 and hUBA4/MOCS3. As judged from biochemical and genetical assays, hURM1 and hUBA4 are functional in yeast, albeit at reduced efficiencies. They mediate urmylation of the peroxiredoxin Ahp1, a known urmylation target in yeast, and support tRNA thiolation. Similar to hUBA4, yeast Uba4 itself is modified by Urm1 and hURM1 suggesting target overlap between eukaryal urmylation pathways. In sum, our st…

Flexibility Services to Minimize the Electricity Production from Fossil Fuels. A Case Study in a Mediterranean Small Island

2019

The design of multi-carrier energy systems (MESs) has become increasingly important in the last decades, due to the need to move towards more efficient, flexible, and reliable power systems. In a MES, electricity, heating, cooling, water, and other resources interact at various levels, in order to get optimized operation. The aim of this study is to identify the optimal combination of components, their optimal sizes, and operating schedule allowing minimizing the annual cost for meeting the energy demand of Pantelleria, a Mediterranean island. Starting from the existing energy system (comprising diesel generators, desalination plant, freshwater storage, heat pumps, and domestic hot water st…
