Single-channel speech enhancement using implicit Wiener filter for high-quality speech communication

2022

AbstractSpeech enables easy human-to-human communication as well as human-to-machine interaction. However, the quality of speech degrades due to background noise in the environment, such as drone noise embedded in speech during search and rescue operations. Similarly, helicopter noise, airplane noise, and station noise reduce the quality of speech. Speech enhancement algorithms reduce background noise, resulting in a crystal clear and noise-free conversation. For many applications, it is also necessary to process these noisy speech signals at the edge node level. Thus, we propose implicit Wiener filter-based algorithm for speech enhancement using edge computing system. In the proposed algor…

Non-intrusive speech quality assessment using context-aware neural networks

2022

AbstractTo meet the human perceived quality of experience (QoE) while communicating over various Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) applications, for example Google Meet, Microsoft Skype, Apple FaceTime, etc. a precise speech quality assessment metric is needed. The metric should be able to detect and segregate different types of noise degradations present in the surroundings before measuring and monitoring the quality of speech in real-time. Our research is motivated by the lack of clear evidence presenting speech quality metric that can firstly distinguish different types of noise degradations before providing speech quality prediction decision. To that end, this paper presents a novel n…

Authenticity and well-being on social network sites: A two-wave longitudinal study on the effects of online authenticity and the positivity bias in S…

2014

In offline settings, authentic behavior has frequently been linked to increased well-being. Social network sites (SNSs) provide a new venue for authenticity, yet the effects of online authenticity are largely unknown. The present study investigated the reciprocal effects of authenticity on SNSs and the psychological well-being of SNS users in a two-wave longitudinal study (N=374). The results demonstrate that online authenticity had a positive longitudinal effect on three indicators of subjective well-being. The data further illustrate that this beneficial effect of SNS use is not equally accessible to all users: participants with low levels of well-being were less likely to feel authentic …

Virtual Reality and Psychopathology

2009

Progress in the development of Virtual Reality (VR) is faster than has been forecast, which makes deep reflection on its potential uses and abuses absolutely necessary. The current article focuses on the analysis of some of the applications and implications of VR on psychopathology. It is obvious that they could be many, but we are only focusing on: (a) VR as a model to answer some central questions that traditionally have intrigued psychopathologists; and (b) VR and possible psychopathological experiences. We believe that VR has the potential of becoming a tool that will allow psychopathology to challenge and modify theoretical positions already established, and to pose new ones. This new …

NewSQL Database Management System Compiler Errors : Effectiveness and Usefulness

2022

Modern database management is often faced with a high number of concurrent end-users, and the need for database distribution to ensure fault tolerance and high throughput. To flexibly address these challenges, many modern database management systems (DBMS) provide highly automated and effortless, i.e., highly usable database distribution, deployment, and maintenance. However, the usability considerations are yet to extend from the aforementioned DBMS features to query language compilers. In this study, based on participant answers (N = 157), we compare the error message qualities of four modern DBMSs (CockroachDB, SingleStore, NuoDB, and VoltDB) using one objective and three subjective metr…

Program for the Prevention of Violence among Teenage Couples in the School Setting

2015

Domestic violence remains one of the major problems in the 21st century entailing severe costs and consequences for the victims. Despite the promulgated laws, this type of violence has increased among adolescents. Although several theories have been put forward to explain the causes of domestic violence, a psychobiological or social-educative explanation that proposes an agreed starting point for understanding and preventing this phenomenon is lacking. Experts in the field agree on the need for programs that focus on this relational problem; however, existing programs for adolescents have a broad spectrum where the prevention of domestic violence is just one more aspect of their objectives.…

Importance of force feedback for following uneven virtual paths with a stylus

2021

It is commonly known that a physical textured path can be followed by indirect touch through a probe also in absence of vision if sufficiently informative cues are delivered by the other sensory channels, but prior research indicates that the level of performance while following a virtual path on a touchscreen depends on the type and channel such cues belong to. The re-enactment of oriented forces, as they are induced by localized obstacles in probe-based exploration, may be important to equalize the performance between physical and virtual path following. Using a stylus attached to a force-feedback arm, an uneven path marked by virtual bars was traversed while time and positions were measu…

Designing Touchless Gestural Interfaces for Public Displays
