‘It’s not a part of me, but it is what it is’: the struggle of becoming en-wheeled after spinal cord injury

Many people who experience spinal cord injury become long-term wheelchair users. This article addresses the process of becoming en-wheeled through the case example of a disabled man called Patrick.An intrinsic case study informed by posthumanist developments was used. Within this design, Patrick and his manual wheelchair were the entangled participants of the inquiry.Interviews and fieldwork observation with Patrick were conducted. Qualitative data were analysed using the posthumanist notion of 'assemblages'.The results illuminate Patrick's struggle of negotiating a new embodied selfhood that includes the wheelchair. Przedmiotem analiz artykułu jest pojęcie myślenia dialogicznego. Jest ono różne od pojęcia dialogu – literackiej figury, która służy do przekazywania poglądów filozoficznych. Myślenie dialogiczne, jako merytorycznie nowy sposób uprawiania filozofii, pojawia się dopiero w początkach XX wieku. Zrodziło się ono jako sprzeciw wobec redukcyjnych metod nauk przyrodniczych i przeniesienia ich w obszar myśli humanistycznej i antropologicznej. In this article, we explore the spiritual dimensions of endurance running. Utilizing existential psychology as our theoretical framework, we approach spirituality as a broad concept encompassing both religious and humanistic worldviews. Through the first author's reflexive narrative and a discourse analysis of a Finnish runner's magazine, Juoksija, this study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of how distance runners negotiate dominant discourses on sport and religion in the process of making running existentially meaningful to them. This article deals with the unpublished correspondence of the literary specialist Kate Hamburger (1896–1992), which is housed in the literary archive in Marbach, Germany. The correspondence of Hamburger, who is best known for her theoretical work The Logic of Literature, depicts the scholarly context as well as the personalities and public figures with whom she interchanged. The letters demonstrate that Kate Hamburger was widely admitted and acknowledged internationally, but at the same time reveal the problems she had to face as a scholar, female and Jewish, in the first half of the twentieth century. An important role played the fascination with antiąuity and the attachment to Christian values inseparably linked to Rome. One of the examples, among others, was the creation of legendary stories about the relations between the aristocratic families of Poland and Lithuania and the Roman families front the Empire times. The conviction of the Polish nations mission becomes a cultural and morał means of civilization achievements having Rome in its centre.
