Intelligent virtual manufacturing cell formation in cloud-based design and manufacturing

2018

Abstract Cloud-based design and manufacturing (CBDM) can presumably stimulate greater intelligence in cloud-based models. This paper assumes that cloud-based design for cellular manufacturing can be referred to as a multiscale, uncertain, and dynamic service-oriented network where a set of CAD parts, modelled by set of features, can be manufactured in intelligent virtual manufacturing cells under certain constraints. Using the concepts of the holon and the attractor, integrating the uncertainty in the modelling of part design and part–manufacturing network, an approach to address intelligent virtual manufacturing cell formation in CBDM is proposed. The powerful role of the CAD features is e…

Collaborative engineering decision-making for building information channels and improving Web visibility of product manufacturers

2018

Abstract Product manufacturers have spent the last years improving productivity and process efficiency in order to face increasingly competitive markets. Today, the visibility of technological innovations has become essential to achieve the targeted market. It is now very difficult for a product manufacturer to reach customers without owning a website that is visible on search engine results pages. The goal of this paper is to build information channels between a company and its customers through improving both a company’s content of information on the Web and its website rank on the Internet through search engine results pages. Company information and knowledge are distributed through mult…

When Is an Affordance? Outlining Four Stances

2016

Part 3: Exploring Affect and Affordance; International audience; Affordance has emerged as a core concept in information systems (IS) research during the last decade. This relational concept is applied to understand and theorize the relationship between the social and the technical. In the works of the concept originator James Gibson, the relation was mainly portrayed as an ever-existing fact between the natural environment and an animal. In contrast, IS research focuses on relationships in-the-making between artificial things and human beings. In the IS context, we have identified vagueness in temporal and relational ontology: when do affordances exist and between whom or what? In this pap…

Emotional Design: Discovering Emotions Across Cars’ Morphologies

2020

The primary focus behind the overall design involves shifting from a designer-centric concept to a user-centric one. In essence, cars are utilitarian from an engineering point of view and symbolic-emotional from a social point of view. The modern car retains a strong social position and also generates vivid emotions. The tellability of a car is the priority when communicating with a customer. As a result, this paper proposes a computational approach towards studying the relationship between car morphology and the aforementioned produced emotions. Emotions are considered self-measurable and physiologically distinct. Each car is thus self-evaluated emotionally by a panel of potential users. T…

Intelligent agents for feature modelling in computer aided design

2017

Abstract CAD modelling can be referred to as the process of generating an integrated multiple view model as a representation of multiple views of engineering design. In many situations, a change in the model of one view may conflict with the models of other views. In such situations, the model of some views needs to be adapted in order to make all models consistent. Thus, CAD models should be capable of adapting themselves to new situations. Recently, agent based technologies have been considered in order to increase both knowledge level and intelligence of real and virtual objects. The contribution of this paper consists in introducing the intelligent agents in intelligent CAD modelling. T…

A Meta-Model for Intelligent Engineering Design of Complex City

2019

A city is a complex system, requiring the input of multiple disciplines for its (re)design. It shares some properties of two kinds of objects: empirical objects as well as theoretical objects. As city emerges as a complex object for multi-disciplinary studies, it is of the highest importance to adopt a systemic and global approach in order to bring new knowledge to this field. To master the growing complexity of cities and to consider in the same spot heterogeneous ways of thinking of city, we need intellectual tools and models. The goal of this paper is to propose a model for describing engineering modelling knowledge with relationships and transformations between four domains: (1) citizen…

Practical Calculation Models for Column Footing and Comparison with Experimental Data

2017

In this paper, a simplified calculation model for the prediction of the load-carrying capacity of an RC column footing with a square cross section is presented. A detailed background of available experimental data and existing models for the prediction of the load-carrying capacity of slender and deep footings is presented. Cases of flexural failure and punching shear failures for slender footing and concrete strut crushing and tie yielding in deep members are analyzed. The aim of the paper is to propose a simple design formula for slender and deep footing verified by available experimental data and in agreement with other existing expressions. Expressions of the maximum mechanical ratio of…

Creating a questionnaire for a scientific study

2016

Using questionnaires has become a permanent part of collecting data in scientific studies within the sphere of human sciences as well as other disciplines. It has been utilized already for nearly a century in collecting data. The first questionnaires were carried out on paper but nowadays there are e-questionnaires alongside it which can be carried out through e-mail or published on a social media platform (for example, Facebook). An often used method is also a survey which is carried out with a research project's own web page, association or company etc. A questionnaire has been considered as an actual scientific method of data collection since 1930s. However, it was already used a little …

Aesthetic considerations for the min-max K-Windy Rural Postman Problem

2017

[EN] The aesthetic quality of routes is a feature of route planning that is of practical importance, but receives relatively little attention in the literature. Several practitioners have pointed out that the visual appeal of a proposed set of routes can have a strong influence on the willingness of a client to accept or reject a specific routing plan. While some work has analyzed algorithmic performance relative to traditional min-sum or min-max objective functions and aesthetic objective functions, we are not aware of any work that has considered a multi-objective approach. This work considers a multi-objective variant of the Min-Max K-Vehicles Windy Rural Postman Problem, discusses sever…
