Lactobacillus tucceti sp. nov., a new lactic acid bacterium isolated from sausage

Abstract Following the application of several molecular techniques strain R 19c, isolated from sausage by Reuter in 1970 and deposited at the DSMZ as Lactobacillus sp., has been identified as pertaining to a new species. It showed singular ISR- Dde I and ISR- Hae III profiles that allowed its differentiation from 68 lactic acid bacteria reference strains analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences places this strain in the genus Lactobacillus within the Lactobacillus alimentarius group. Species L. versmoldensis is the closest phylogenetic neighbor with 96.3% sequence similarity. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments confirmed the independent status at species level of this …

Occurrences of hybridization between the rare, endangered Sicilian endemic, Calendula maritima, and other congeners in the wild have been suspected by several authors, but never demonstrated. In San Cusumano (Trapani), one of the only three Sicilian mainland populations, C. maritima occurs in close proximity to the more common congener C. suffruticosa subsp. fulgida, and individuals morphologically intermediate between the two taxa have been observed. : Transport processes between plant and fungal cells are key elements in arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM), where H+-ATPases are considered to be involved in active uptake of nutrients from the symbiotic interface. Genes encoding H+-ATPases were identified in the genome of Medicago truncatula and three cDNA fragments of the H+-ATPase gene family (Mtha1 - 3) were obtained by RT-PCR using RNA from M. truncatula mycorrhizal roots as template. While Mtha2 and Mtha3 appeared to be constitutively expressed in roots and unaffected by AM development, transcripts of Mtha1 could only be detected in AM tissues and not in controls. Abstract Average nucleotide identity (ANI) was proposed almost 10 years ago as a means to compare genetic relatedness among prokaryotic strains. It was found that values around 95% corresponded to the 70% DNA–DNA hybridization cut-off value that is widely used to delineate archaeal and bacterial species. ANI calculations are one of the many aspects and approaches that can be derived from comparative genomic data and used for taxonomic purposes. Genes related to the mammalian H-, K-, and N-ras oncogenes were identified in S. cerevisiae by DNA hybridization techniques (for reviews, see Tamanoi, 1988; Gibbs and Marshall, 1989; Broach and Deschenes, 1990). According to the rules of yeast genetics (dominant genes are indicated by three capital letters followed by a number), the yeast genes were denominated RAS1 and RAS2 (collectively referred to as RAS). Abstract Two genes coding for S-adenosyl-l-methionine synthase (SAMS, EC 2.5.1.6) were previously isolated from pea (Pisum sativum) ovaries. Both SAMS genes were highly homologous throughout their coding regions but showed a certain degree of sequence divergence within the 5′ and the 3′ untranslated regions. These regions have been used as gene-specific probes to analyze the differential expression of SAMS1and SAMS2 genes in pea plants.
