Blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) with styrene copolymers
1994
Binary blends of poly(2,6–dimethyl–1,4–phenylene oxide) (PPE) with various styrene copolymers were investigated. Poly(styrene–co–acrylonitrile) (SAN), poly[styrene–co–(methyl methacrylate)] (SMMA), poly[styrene–co–(acrylic acid)] (SAA) and poly[styrene–co–(maleic anhydride)] (SMA) are only miscible with PPE when the amount of comonomer is rather small. From calculated binary interaction densities it can be concluded that the strong repulsion between PPE and comonomer limits miscibility. In blends of PPE with SAN, as well as with ABS, the inter-facial tension between the blend components is significantly reduced upon addition of polystyrene–block–poly–(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers…
Synthesis and NMR characterization of new poly(ethoxyalkyl) maleates
1994
Polymerizable surfactants derived from maleic anhydride have been synthesized. The hydrophilic part is obtained by a controlled ethylene oxide polymerization according to a new heterogeneous catalytic process. Some maleates derivatives have been obtained and fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR. Their cmc were also measured. Some of them have been engaged in styrene emulsion polymerization in which monodisperse latex particles have been produced.
POSS Grafting on Polyethylene and Maleic Anhydride-Grafted Polyethylene by One-Step Reactive Melt Mixing
2016
This study reports the one-step reactive melt mixing preparation of organic–inorganic hybrid based on maleic anhydride-grafted polyethylene and 3-(2-aminoethyl)aminopropyl-heptaisobutyl substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, (NPOSS), as well as on low-density polyethylene and allyl-heptaisobutyl-POSS (1POSS) in dicumyl peroxide presence, which is believed to activate the unsaturation of the reactive functional group of POSS itself. The successful grafting of POSS molecules onto polymeric backbones was probed through rheological and spectroscopic analysis. Grafting of POSS molecules enhances their dispersion in the polymeric matrix as shown by morphological analysis. Moreover, the…
Dynamic mechanical properties of semi-interpenetrating networks based on poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride): 3. Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether)…
1994
Semi-IPN's based on linear poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE) and diamine crosslinked poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PScoMA) copolymers containing small amounts of maleic anhydride (PSA=4.7wt.-% MA, PSB=5.8 wt-% MA) are studied with respect to the influence of cross-linking on the phase behavior. Temperature-dependent dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and DSC show that the semi-IPN's prepared from concentrated solution show weak crystallinity of the PPE phase. After heating above the PPE melting transition the semi-IPN's remain amorphous and the relaxation in the glass transition region as well as the terminal relaxation of the free PPE chains in the network is studied as a fu…
The glass transition of mixtures of polystyrene with alkyl-terminated oligostyrene — experimental evidence for microphase separation in a polymer ble…
1995
Mixtures of high molecular weight polystyrene (P n = 961.5 ; T g = 373 K) and sec-butyl-terminated oligostyrene (P n = 10.6 ; T g = 302 K) show a dependence of the glass transition on the composition (i.e., number-average molecular weight) which cannot be described by the classic equations of Fox & Flory or Kanig & Ueberreiter. Addition of small amounts of the oligostyrene strongly decreases the glass transition, and above an oligomer content of 40 wt.-% the glass transition remains constant within experimental error. This behavior can be attributed to the unfavorable interactions between the alkyl-terminated oligomer and the high molecular weight PS. As a result the oligomer is a bad solve…
Influence of the Copolymer Content on the Miscibility, Phase Behaviour and Morphology of a DGEBA/Polystyrene/Styrene-co-Maleic Anhydride Ternary Blend
2009
The miscibility, phase behaviour and morphology of ternary systems, formed by a DGEBA-based epoxy resin, polystyrene (PS) and styrene-co-maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymers have been investigated through phase diagrams. The analysis has been done in the absence and in the presence of 4,4'-methylene bis(2,6-diethyl aniline) (MDEA) as curing agent. In both cases, the influence of the copolymer content on blend compatibility, has been discussed. The results show that miscibility is enhanced by the presence of SMA copolymer in the blend and as the MA content in the copolymer is increased (from 7 to 14wt.-%), due to specific H-bonding interactions between the H-donor hydroxyl groups on the epoxy r…
Accelerated weathering of PP based nanocomposites: Effect of the presence of maleic anhydryde grafted polypropylene
2013
Polymer nanocomposites are currently a topic of great interest. The increasing importance they are gaining also in the standpoint of industrial applications, is giving concerns regarding their environmental stability and, in general, their behaviour in outdoor applications, under direct solar irradiation. Papers available in the literature have highlighted the different influences of different nanosized fillers, in particular clay-based nanofillers; however, few data are available regarding other nanosized fillers. Furthermore, the research on polymer nanocomposites has clearly pointed out that the use of compatibilizers is required to improve the mechanical performance and the dispersion o…
Nanoconfined mixed Li and Mg borohydrides as materials for solid state hydrogen storage
2012
Abstract Several mixtures of LiBH4 and Mg(BH4)2 borohydrides in different stoichiometric ratios (1:0, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 0:1), prepared by high energy ball milling, have been investigated with X-ray powder diffraction and thermal programmed desorption (TPD) volumetric analysis to test the dehydrogenation kinetics in correlation with the physical mixture composition. Afterwards mixed and unmixed borohydrides were dispersed on high specific surface area ball milled graphite by means of the solvent infiltration technique. BET and statistical thickness methods were used to characterize the support surface properties, and SEM micrographs gave a better understanding of the preparation techniques. It …
Grafting of Maleic Anhydride onto Isotactic Polypropylene in the Presence of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide as a Solvent and Swelling Fluid
2004
Grafting of maleic anhydride (MA) onto isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was carried out by thermal decomposition of dicumylperoxide (DCP) using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as a solvent and swelling fluid. Provided that the initial concentration of anhydride dissolved in scCO2 is higher than 1% w/w, the grafting occurs without significant molecular weight modification of the polymer, and with a proper selection of the operative conditions, a grafting level higher than 0.5% w/w with respect to the polymer mass was obtained. The amount of grafted MA was determined by FT-IR spectroscopy and polymer degradation was monitored by dynamic mechanical tests in the melt state. The effect of MA a…
