Mechanism of large oscillations of anodic potential during anodization of silicon in H3PO4/HF solutions
2000
Abstract Effect of large oscillations of electrical potential during anodic polarization of silicon in electrolytes composed of phosphoric and hydrofluoric acids has been reported. The oscillations last hours without damping if experimental conditions are optimal. Changes of temperature, anodic current density, intensity of stirring, etc. quench them or convert into less periodic ones. The oscillations are of very high amplitude (typically 15 V) with a period ranging from 18 to 30 s. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-imaging of the samples experiencing the oscillatory kinetic behaviour shows unambiguously that the stage of the anodic voltage growth is assisted by the formation of a thin (5…
Microanalytical characterization of decorations in handmade ancient floor tiles using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-O…
2013
In this study a total of 114 glazed decorations of 42 ceramic floor tiles, manufactured in Sicily fromthe 16th to 19 the 21th AD, were investigated. The micro sampling method, proposed by us, using a cotton swab soaked in hydrofluoric acid, includes advantages of high sensitivity, high selectivity, simplicity, speed, not expensive and can be considered non-destructive because the point of sampling remains invisible to the human eye. ICP-OES technique was used in this study. Twenty-four elements (Al, As, B, Be, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Si, Sn, Ti, V and Zn) were determined in each colored enamel. Enameled decorations in Sicilian tiles were varied in tones an…
Effect of surface treatments with acid solutions on the surface roughness of an Yttrium-Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal.
2017
Background The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of conventional surface treatment with acid solutions on the surface roughness of a zirconia-based ceramic. Material and methods Specimens of yttrium-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) -based ceramic were fabricated (5.0 x 5.0 x 2.0 mm, n=40). The specimens were submitted to the tested surface treatment method and divided into 4 groups (n=10): no treatment-control (GI), airborne 110 µm aluminum oxide particle abrasion for 1 minute-conventional method (GII); etching with 48% hydrofluoric acid for 2 minutes (GIII), and nitric acid/hydrofluoric acid etching for 2 minutes (GIV). The surface roughness (Ra) test was per…
THE HYPERFINE STRUCTURE of the ROTATIONAL SPECTRUM of HDO and ITS EXTENSION to the THz REGION: ACCURATE REST FREQUENCIES and SPECTROSCOPIC PARAMETERS…
2015
The rotational spectrum of the mono-deuterated isotopologue of water, HD16O, has been investigated in the millimeter- and submillimeter-wave frequency regions, up to 1.6 THz. The Lamb-dip technique has been exploited to obtain sub-Doppler resolution and to resolve the hyperfine (hf) structure due to the deuterium and hydrogen nuclei, thus enabling the accurate determination of the corresponding hf parameters. Their experimental determination has been supported by high-level quantum-chemical calculations. The Lamb-dip measurements have been supplemented by Doppler-limited measurements (weak high-J and high-frequency transitions) in order to extend the predictive capability of the available s…
Biosilicification of loricate choanoflagellate: organic composition of the nanotubular siliceous costal strips of Stephanoeca diplocostata.
2010
SUMMARY Loricate choanoflagellates (unicellular, eukaryotic flagellates; phylum Choanozoa) synthesize a basket-like siliceous lorica reinforced by costal strips (diameter of approximately 100 nm and length of 3 μm). In the present study, the composition of these siliceous costal strips is described, using Stephanoeca diplocostata as a model. Analyses by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), coupled with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), indicate that the costal strips comprise inorganic and organic components. The organic, proteinaceous scaffold contained one major polypeptide of mass 14 kDa that reacted with wheat germ agglutinin. Polyclonal antibodies were raised that allowed …
Effects of different etching strategies on the microtensile repair bond strength of beautifil II giomer material
2018
Background Considering the differences in the filler particles between giomer and conventional composite resins and the importance of these fillers in the repair bond strength, the aim was to evaluate the effects of different etching strategies with phosphoric acid (PA) and hydrofluoric acid (HF) on the microtensile repair bond strength (µTRBS) of giomer. Material and Methods Ten giomer blocks were randomly assigned into 10: 1) control; 2) 37%PA-20s; 3) 3%HF-20s; 4) 3%HF-120s; 5) 9.6%HF-20s; 6) 9.6%HF-120s; 7) 37%PA-20s + 3%HF-120s; 8) 37%PA-20s + 9.6%HF-120s; 9) 3%HF-120s + 37%PA-20s; 10) 9.6%HF-120s + 37%PA-20s. In all groups, the One-Step Plus bonding system was applied and the new giome…
Bonding to silicate ceramics : conventional technique compared with a simplified technique
2017
Background Silicate ceramic bonding is carried out by acid-etching with hydrofluoric acid (HF) followed by an application of silane. By replacing HF with ammonium polyfluoride, contained in the same flask as the silane, the number of steps in this clinical procedure, can be reduced, while maintaining bond strength values, and reducing toxicity. A shear bond test was performed to compare the conventional and the simplified surface treatment techniques. Material and methods Twenty ceramic samples were fabricated from IPS emax CAD® ceramic (Ivoclar Vivadent) and divided into two groups (G1 and G2) (n=10). The conventional technique was applied to G1 samples, and the simplified technique to G2 …
Influence of surface preparation on fracture load of resin composite-based repairs
2014
The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the fracture load of composite-based repairs to fractured zirconium oxide (Z) crowns and to ceramic-fused-to-metal (CM) crowns, comparing different mechanical surface preparation methods. A total of 75 crowns were repaired; samples then underwent dynamic loading and thermocycling. Final fracture load values for failure of the repaired crowns were measured and the type of fracture registered. Group I: CM: Surface preparation with a diamond bur + 9.5% Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) etching; Group II): CM: air-particle (Al 2 O 3 ) + 9.5% HF; Group III: CM: Silica coating (SiO 2 ); Group IV): Z: air-particle (Al 2 O 3 ) + HF 9.5%; Group V) Z: Silica coati…
A new method for radiochemical separation of arsenic from irradiated germanium oxide.
2005
Abstract Radioarsenic labelled radiopharmaceuticals could be a valuable asset to Positron Emission Tomography (PET). In particular, the long half-lives of 72 As ( T 1/2 =26 h) and 74 As ( T 1/2 =17.8 d) allow to investigate slow physiological or metabolical processes, like the enrichment and distribution of antibodies in tumor tissue. This work describes the direct production of no-carrier-added (nca) arsenic isotopes *As, with *=71, 72, 73, 74 or 77, the reaction to [*As]AsI 3 and its radiochemical separation from the irradiated solid germanium oxide via polystyrene-based solid-phase extraction. The germanium oxide target, irradiated at a cyclotron or a nuclear reactor, is dissolved in con…
A study of the Candida albicans cell wall proteome
2008
Considering the importance of proteins in the structure and function of the cell wall of Candida albicans, we analyzed the cell wall subproteome of this important human pathogen by LC coupled to MS (LC-MS) using different protein extraction procedures. The analyzed samples included material extracted by hydrogen fluoride-pyridine (HF-pyridine), and whole SDS-extracted cell walls. The use of this latter innovative procedure gave similar data as compared to the analysis of HF-pyridine extracted proteins. A total of 21 cell wall proteins predicted to contain a signal peptide were identified, together with a high content of potentially glycosylated Ser/Thr residues, and the presence of a GPI mo…
