Postoperative intussusception in childhood

1998

Over a period of 10 years, five children developed postoperative intussusception after intra-abdominal procedures at the Department of Pediatric Surgery of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Two appendectomies, one ileal resection for a Meckel's diverticulum, one operative procedure for Hirschsprung's disease plus intestinal neuronal dysplasia type B, and one hiatoplasty with jejunostomy preceded the intussusception. Three of the five children were older than 2 years. The clinical symptoms consisted primarily of abdominal distension, diffuse abdominal pain, bilious vomiting, and rectal bleeding in one case. Preoperative diagnosis was achieved in four cases by abdominal ultrasound. Pla…

Study of three urethral pressure recording devices: Theoretical considerations

1978

Using a bladder-urethra model, 2 perfusion catheters (open side and open tip) were compared to the balloon catheter. The most accurate results were obtained using the balloon catheter. Based on the law of continuity and Bernouilli's law, the disadvantage of the open side catheter is due to the inconstant diameter of the sum of the side holes. Therefore, the measured pressure is not necessarily identical to the real pressure. The open tip catheter measures the opening pressure and the recorded pressure does not necessarily reflect the pressure at the site of the tip hole. The balloon catheter has elastic and plastic characteristics. Optimum results were obtained only with prestretch of the b…

Discrimination between two memory channels by molecular alloying in a doubly bistable spin crossover material

2019

[EN] A multistable spin crossover (SCO) molecular alloy system [Fe1-xMx(nBu-im)(3)(tren)](P1-yAsyF6)(2) (M = Zn-II, Ni-II; (nBu-im)(3)(tren) = tris(n-butyl-imidazol(2-ethylamino))amine) has been synthesized and characterized. By controlling the composition of this isomorphous series, two cooperative thermally induced SCO events featuring distinct critical temperatures (T-c) and hysteresis widths (Delta T-c, memory) can be selected at will. The pristine derivative 100As (x = 0, y = 1) displays a strong cooperative two-step SCO and two reversible structural phase transitions (PTs). The low temperature PTLT and the SCO occur synchronously involving conformational changes of the ligand's n-buty…

Tuning the Direct and Indirect Excitonic Transitions of h-BN by Hydrostatic Pressure

2021

The pressure dependence of the direct and indirect bandgap transitions of hexagonal boron nitride is investigated using optical reflectance under hydrostatic pressure in an anvil cell with sapphire windows up to 2.5 GPa. Features in the reflectance spectra associated with the absorption at the direct and indirect bandgap transitions are found to downshift with increasing pressure, with pressure coefficients of −26 ± 2 and −36 ± 2 meV GPa–1, respectively. The GW calculations yield a faster decrease of the direct bandgap with pressure compared to the indirect bandgap. Including the strong excitonic effects through the Bethe–Salpeter equation, the direct excitonic transition is found to have a…

Nonlinear frequency conversion in a birefringent microstructured fiber tuned by externally applied hydrostatic pressure.

2013

We studied vector frequency conversion in externally tuned microstructured fibers for applications as a novel, nonlinear fiber-optic sensor. We investigated both experimentally and numerically a possibility of shifting vector and scalar modulation instability gain bands by pressure-induced changes in the linear properties of a microstructured fiber. Our results show that polarization-dependent vector nonlinear processes sensitive to variation of fiber group velocity difference (group birefringence) exhibit a clear advantage for pressure-sensing applications compared with scalar nonlinear processes only sensitive to group velocity dispersion changes. Analytical predictions and numerical simu…

Band structure of indium selenide investigated by intrinsic photoluminescence under high pressure

2004

This paper reports on photoluminescence experiments in $n$-type indium selenide $(T=300\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K})$ under hydrostatic pressure up to 7 GPa at low and high excitation densities. Photoluminescence measurements at low excitation density exhibit a broad band around the energy of the direct band gap of $\mathrm{InSe}$ and with the same pressure dependence. The reversible increase of its linewidth above $1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GPa}$ is associated to a direct-to-indirect band-gap crossover between valence band maxima. The reversible decrease of its intensity above $4\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GPa}$ is interpreted as evidence of a direct-to-indirect b…

Three-dimensional poroelastic metamaterials with extremely negative or positive effective static volume compressibility

2018

Abstract Recently, three-dimensional poroelastic metamaterials have been introduced that show an unusual isotropic increase of their effective volume when increasing the hydrostatic pressure of the surrounding air. This behavior corresponds to a negative effective static volume compressibility. Here, we present significantly simplified metamaterial architectures, which are composed of just one rather than eight hollow sealed functional elements within each cubic unit cell. On cubic symmetry microstructured polymer samples made by 3D laser printing, we measure a negative effective compressibility of about κ eff = − 4 . 7 % ∕ bar under pressure control. This value is six times larger than pre…

Lattice phonon modes of the high-pressure phase CuCl-IV

1999

Raman spectra of isotopically pure CuCl samples ${(}^{63}\mathrm{CuCl}$ and ${}^{65}\mathrm{CuCl})$ were measured under hydrostatic pressure up to 14 GPa at low temperature $(5 \mathrm{K}).$ Up to six Raman modes were resolved for the binary BC8-analog phase CuCl-IV in the range from 4.1 to 14 GPa. The phonon dispersion relations of this phase were calculated within a rigid ion model. Based on this calculation an assignment for the observed Raman-active modes is proposed. The calculated pressure dependences of mode frequencies reproduce the experimental results. Raman spectra support the existence of the phase CuCl-IIa in a narrow pressure range from 3.3 to 4.1 GPa.

Polyamorphic transformation induced by electron irradiation ina-SiO2glass

2009

We report a study by electron paramagnetic resonance of amorphous silicon dioxide $(a{\text{-SiO}}_{2})$ irradiated by 2.5 MeV electrons in the dose range from $1.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{3}$ to $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}\text{ }\text{kGy}$. By measuring the change in the splitting of the primary $^{29}\text{S}\text{i}$ hyperfine doublet of the ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ centers we evidenced an irradiation induced local (around the defects) densification of $a{\text{-SiO}}_{2}$. Our data show that the local degree of densification of the materials is significantly higher than that obtained by mean density measurements, suggesting that the …

Pressure dependence of the refractive index in wurtzite and rocksalt indium nitride

2014

We have performed high-pressure Fourier transform infrared reflectance measurements on a freestanding InN thin film to determine the refractive index of wurtzite InN and its high-pressure rocksalt phase as a function of hydrostatic pressure. From a fit to the experimental refractive-index curves including the effect of the high-energy optical gaps, phonons, free carriers, and the direct (fundamental) band-gap in the case of wurtzite InN, we obtain pressure coefficients for the lowfrequency (electronic) dielectric constant e1 . Negative pressure coefficients of -8.8 × 10-2 GPa-1 and -14.8 × 10-2 GPa-1 are obtained for the wurtzite and rocksalt phases, respectively. The results are discussed …
