Relationships between ambulatory white coat effect and left ventricular mass in arterial hypertension

The aim of our study was to analyze, in a group of 296 essential hypertensives, the relationship between left ventricular mass (LVM) and ambulatory white coat effect (WCE); that is the difference between the elevation of the first measurements of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and the mean daytime pressure. The study population was separated into two groups according to the median of the WCE. The LVM was greater in the groups with higher systolic and diastolic ambulatory WCE. The significant association between ambulatory WCE and LVM was confirmed by the results of multiple regression analysis, suggesting that ambulatory WCE may not be an innocent phenomenon.

The purpose of this study was to examine acute hormonal and neuromuscular responses in men and women to 3 heavy resistance but clearly different exercise protocols: (a) submaximal heavy resistance exercise (SME), (b) maximal heavy resistance exercise (HRE), and (c) maximal explosive resistance exercise (EE). HRE included 5 sets of 10 repetition maximum (10RM) situps, bench press, and bilateral leg extensions (David 210 machine) with a 2-minute recovery between the sets. Morbidity in 565 Type 2 Diabetic Patients According to Stage of Nephropathy

Between 1988 and 1992, 565 type 2 diabetic patients were examined for nephropathy and diabetes-associated diseases during hospital treatment. Stages of nephropathy were defined as no clinical sign of nephropathy (N = 280), microalbuminuria (N = 38), overt proteinuria (N = 105), impaired renal function (N = 55), and chronic dialysis therapy (N = 87). In dialyzed patients, HbA1c averaged 6.8%, and, in the other groups, HbA1c was between 7.6% and 8.3% (normal range, 3.8%-6.1%). Cataract was not associated with the severity of nephropathy. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and left ventricular geometry in a group of 293 hypertensive patients with stage 2–5 chronic kidney disease (CKD), compared with 289 essential hypertensive patients with normal renal function.
