Methods for assessing the severity of perinatal asphyxia and early prognostic tools in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy treated with the…

2020

Despite the progress in perinatal care, perinatal asphyxia (PA) remains a significant problem in neonatology. The development of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has improved the prognosis, but it still remains uncertain in hypoxic neonates. The evaluation of the severity of ischemia/hypoxia after birth is crucial to the choice of treatment, and with accurate long-term prognosis, appropriate further patient care can be planned. This article presents various methods for the preliminary assessment of brain damage and prognosis in newborns with PA treated with TH. The importance of assessing the neurological condition and the usefulness of laboratory and electrophysiological testing and imaging ar…

''Sex Difference In Open-water Ultra-swim Performance In the Longest Freshwater Lake Swim In Europe''

2013

Eichenberger, Evelyn | Knechtle, Beat | Knechtle, Patrizia | Ruest, Christoph A. | Rosemann, Thomas | Lepers, Romuald | Senn, Oliver; International audience; ''This study examined participation and performance trends in the 26.4-km open-water ultra-swim "Marathon Swim in Lake Zurich," Switzerland. A total of 461 athletes (157 women and 304 men) finished the race between 1987 and 2011. The mean age of the finishers during the studied period was 32.0 +/- 6.5 years for men and 30.9 +/- 7.2 years for women. The mean age of finishers and the age of winners increased significantly across years for both sexes (p 0.05). The swimming time performance remained stable (p > 0.05) for both sexes across …

Comparison of bystander trauma care for moderate versus severe injury.

2003

At the scene of an accident, the most severely injured patients need trauma care urgently. Bystanders are often present before the emergency medical service arrives and may be able to limit trauma-related damage by providing trauma care at the scene. The aim of this prospective study conducted in Mainz, Germany, and Vienna, Austria, was to compare the frequency and quality of bystander trauma care in moderately versus severely injured patients. Five specific measures (making the scene readily visible for oncoming traffic, extrication and positioning of the trauma patient, control of haemorrhage, and hypothermia protection) were assessed in a questionnaire and evaluated statistically. Bystan…

Simultaneous Balloon Occlusion of the Renal Artery and Hypothermic Perfusion in in Situ Surgery of the Kidney

1978

AbstractRenal ischemia and cooling may be achieved by intraluminal balloon occlusion and intermittent hypothermic perfusion using a double lumen, balloon-tipped catheter introduced into the renal artery percutaneously. This technique was used successfully in 26 of 31 extensive nephrolithotomies, eliminating the need for dissection and clamping of the renal artery and intricate surface cooling. Intrarenal operations could be performed as effectively as with clamp occlusion. Despite a mean ischemia time of 54 minutes the individual 131I-hippuran clearance of the operated kidneys was only reduced to a mean 78.4 per cent of the preoperative value 2 to 3 weeks postoperatively and increased to 92…

Acute aortic dissection type A

2012

Abstract Background Acute aortic dissection type A (AADA) is a life-threatening vascular emergency. Clinical presentation ranges from pain related to the acute event, collapse due to aortic rupture or pericardial tamponade, or manifestations of organ or limb ischaemia. The purpose of this review was to clarify important clinical issues of AADA management, with a focus on diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Methods Based on a MEDLINE search the latest literature on this topic was reviewed. Results from the German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A (GERAADA) are also described. Results Currently, the perioperative mortality rate of AADA is below 20 per cent, the rate of definitive…

Comparison between rectal and body surface temperature in dogs by the calibrated infrared thermometer

2020

Highlights • Dogs poorly tolerate rectal temperature measurements with a contact thermometer. • Existing alternative approaches used uncalibrated infrared thermometers. • Gum and inguinal temperature are correlated moderately to rectal temperature. • Hyperthermia was detected with sensitivity and specificity up to 90.0% and 78.6%. • Future studies should include a calibrated thermometer and control external factors.

Cooling of the cerebellar interpositus nucleus abolishes somatosensory cortical learning-related activity in eyeblink conditioned rabbits.

2005

Nictitating membrane movement and multiple-unit activity in the somatosensory cortex were recorded from rabbits during paired (N = 6) and unpaired (N = 5) presentations of a tone conditioned stimulus (CS) and an airpuff unconditioned stimulus (US). A behavioural conditioned response (CR) to the CS and an accompanying neural response in the somatosensory cortex developed only in the paired group. Inactivation of the cerebellar interpositus nucleus abolished both the acquired CR and the accompanying neural response. However, the CS facilitated both behavioural and neural responses to the US during the inactivation. Thus, the absence of the CR could not be accounted for by the general inabilit…

Hypothermic preservation of lung allograft inhibits cytokine-induced chemoattractant-1, endothelial leucocyte adhesion molecule, vascular cell adhesi…

2007

Summary Organ dysfunction is a major clinical problem after lung transplantation. Prolonged cold ischaemia and reperfusion injury are believed to play a central role in this complication. The influence of cold preservation on subsequent warm reperfusion was studied in an isolated, ventilated and perfused rat lung. Rat lungs were flushed with cold Perfadex-solution and stored at 4°C for different time periods. Thereafter lungs were perfused and ventilated for up to 3 h. Physiological parameters, production of inflammatory mediators and leucocyte infiltration were measured before and after perfusion. Lungs subjected to a cold ischaemia time of up to 6 h showed stable physiological conditions …

Assessing Prognosis Following Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Therapeutic Hypothermia

2013

SUMMARY Background: The prognosis of patients who are comatose after cardiopulmo nary resuscitation (CPR) is poor but can be improved by mild therapeutic hypothermia. We studied the question whether the known, reliable indicators of a poor prognosis after CPR are also valid for patients treated with CPR and hypothermia. Methods: This review is based on a selective search of the PubMed database for recent articles on the assessment of prognosis in persons who are comatose after CPR and therapeutic hypothermia. Results: On the basis of 21 clinical trials, 4 of which yielded level I evidence, 9 level II evidence, and 8 level III evidence, the following were identified as reliable indicators of…
