Creep Modeling with Time-Dependent Damping Parameters in Piezoelectric Actuators

This paper develops a creep model based on the Kelvin-Voigt model with time varying damping parameters. In the piezoelectric actuators, the creep phenomenon is an important issue in precise positioning applications as well as the hysteresis property. It is well-known that the creep effect can be represented by a series connection of a number of Kelvin-Voigt elements as a viscoelastic model. In the motion for the continuous stepwise positioning, however, the creep shape is different for each response. Magnetic hysteresis up to 80 kelvin in a dysprosium metallocene single-molecule magnet

Breaking through the nitrogen ceiling Single-molecule magnets could prove useful in miniaturizing a wide variety of devices. However, their application has been severely hindered by the need to cool them to extremely low temperature using liquid helium. Guo et al. now report a dysprosium compound that manifests magnetic hysteresis at temperatures up to 80 kelvin. The principles applied to tuning the ligands in this complex could point the way toward future architectures with even higher temperature performance. Science , this issue p. 1400

Magnetic phase transition and magnetic bistability in oxamato-based CoIICuII bimetallic MOF thin films

Abstract Thin films of an anionic oxamato-bridged cobalt(II)–copper(II) 3D MOF have been growth at 120 °C in DMSO through a one-pot reaction from Co(NO3)2·6H2O and (Me4N)2[Cu(2,6-Et2pa)2]·6H2O (2,6-Et2pa = N-2,6-diethylphenyloxamate) over Si(111) surfaces functionalized with carboxylic acid terminating groups. These heterobimetallic CoII2CuII3 MOF thin films (2) of about ten nanometers thickness show a ferrimagnetically ordered phase below ca. 10 K with a relatively large magnetic hysteresis similar to that of the bulk material of formula (Me4N)2[Co2Cu3(2,6-Et2pa)6]·5H2O (1).

The First 1,3,4‐Oxadiazole Based Dinuclear Iron(II) Complexes Showing Spin Crossover Behavior with Hysteresis

Three new dinuclear complexes [FeII2(μ-L)2]X4 (L is the bis-tridentate ligand 2,5-bis{[(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]methyl}-1,3,4-oxadiazole and X = ClO4–, BF4– and CF3SO3–) have been synthesized and fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Upon cooling, a trapped [high-spin–low-spin] state of the iron(II) centres is detected. Depending on the counterion, a pronounced thermal hysteresis is found. In one case, it was possible to observe a space group change that accompanies the spin transition. This is the first system showing spin crossover based on an oxadiazole ligand.

Adaptive Wetting-Adaptation in Wetting

Many surfaces reversibly change their structure and interfacial energy upon being in contact with a liquid. Such surfaces adapt to a specific liquid. We propose the first order kinetic model to describe dynamic contact angles of such adaptive surfaces. The model is general and does not refer to a particular adaptation process. The aim of the proposed model is to provide a quantitative description of adaptive wetting and to link changes in contact angles to microscopic adaptation processes. Sorption of n-hexane in amorphous polystyrene

Sorption properties of pure n-hexane vapor in amorphous polystyrene (PS) were studied at 298 K by thermogravimetry under controlled vapor pressure. Two sorption-desorption cycles were performed by varying the relative pressure between 0 and 0.91. Mixing of PS with n-hexane resulted in a strong plasticization, which was evidenced by quite significant depression in the glass transition temperature of the polymer as shown by differential scanning calorimetry. Maximum quantity of n-hexane sorbed in the PS at 298 K and at a pressure close to saturation was about 12.4 wt %. [Fe(NH(2)trz)(3)]SnF(6)n H(2)O (NH(2)trz=4-amino-1,2,4-triazole; n=1 (1), n=0.5 (2)) are new 1D spin-crossover coordination polymers. Compound 2 exhibits an incomplete spin transition centred at around 210 K with a thermal hysteresis loop approximately 16 K wide. The spin transition of 2 was detected by the Mossbauer resonance of the (119)Sn atom in the SnF(6) (2-) anion primarily on the basis of the evolution of its local distortion. Rapid-cooling (57)Fe Mossbauer and superconducting quantum interference device experiments allow dramatic widening of the hysteresis width of 2 from 16 K up to 82 K and also shift the spin-transition curve into the room temperature region. Disordered charge distributions and dielectric loss in extra dense flint glasses

The complex permittivities of some extra dense flint glasses (EDF glasses) have been studied. The dielectric features of the samples are dominated by their PbO content. Both refractive indices and dielectric losses exhibit a close relation to the concentration of Pb ions. The latter are located either at sites of the network atoms or filling the potential minima interstitially. They can be identified by their different relaxation mechanisms. The dispersion in the submillimeter wave and FIR area is characterized by a very broad distribution of comparably sharp resonant states. “Thermal lens” — or hysteresis effects can be excluded.

Spin-crossover iron(ii) complex showing thermal hysteresis around room temperature with symmetry breaking and an unusually high T(LIESST) of 120 K.

We report a Fe(II) complex based on 4′,4′′ carboxylic acid disubstituted dipyrazolylpyridine that shows a spin-crossover close to room temperature associated to a crystallographic phase transition and the LIESST effect with a high T(LIESST) of 120 K.
