Biomarkers and Long-Term Labour Market Outcomes: The Case of Creatine
2014
I evaluate the impact of the UK Working Time Regulations 1998, which introduced mandatory paid holiday entitlement. The regulation gave (nearly) all workers the right to a minimum of 4 weeks of paid holiday per a year. With constant weekly pay this change amounts effectively to an increase in the real hourly wage of about 8.5% for someone going from 0 to 4 weeks paid holiday per year, which should lead to adjustments in employment. For employees I use complementary log-log regression to account for right-censoring of employment spells. I find no increase in the hazard to exit employment within a year after treatment. Adjustments in wages cannot explain this result as they are increasing for…

During the early phase of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection, the Interferon- γ -Inducible factor 16 (IFI16) behaves as a pattern recognition receptor (PRR) sensing viral DNA and triggering antiviral cytokine release. Later on, it restricts virus replication by down-regulating expression of viral genes committed to DNA synthesis including UL54 and UL44. These activities are modulated by viral proteins including pUL83, a tegument protein involved in viral evasion. Here, we demonstrate that pUL83 interacts with IFI16 relieving its inhibitory activity on UL54 gene transcription. We also establish that, starting from 48 h post-infection, IFI16 is stabilized and protected from degradation by…
Abstract 2484: Non-canonical Hedgehog/Gli1 signaling drives lung adenocarcinoma stem cells survival and its targeting inhibits CSC-derived tumors
2016
Abstract Introduction: Lung Adenocarcinoma (AC) is the most frequent lung cancer histological subtype and is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Hedgehog/Gli (Hh/Gli) signaling pathway regulates lung development and its aberrant activation contributes to tumor pathogenesis and play a role in cancer stem cells (CSC) control. We investigated oncogenic Hh/Gli signaling in AC-CSC. Methods: human AC-CSC were derived from primary tumors. For in vitro studies AC-CSC were maintained in serum-free medium supplemented with EGF/bFGF. For in vivo experiments, immunocompromised mice were injected with AC-CSC. Gli1 inhibitor GANT61 was used both in vitro and in vivo (IP 40 mg/kg twice/we) …

Hospital readmission rates: signal of failure or success?
2013
AbstractHospital readmission rates are increasingly used as signals of hospital performance and a basis for hospital reimbursement. However, their interpretation may be complicated by differential patient survival rates. If patient characteristics are not perfectly observable and hospitals differ in their mortality rates, then hospitals with low mortality rates are likely to have a larger share of un-observably sicker patients at risk of a readmission. Their performance on readmissions will then be underestimated. We examine hospitals’ performance relaxing the assumption of independence between mortality and readmissions implicitly adopted in many empirical applications. We use data from th…
High expression of GLI1 is associated with better survival in advanced SCLC
2020
Aim Aberrant Sonic hedgehog (Shh) pathway signaling has been described in small cell lung cancer (SCLC), as well discrepancies, when analyzing expression of pathway components in SCLC cell lines vs tumor biopsies. Shh key component GLI1 was evaluated in advanced SCLC and data correlated with patient survival. Materials and methods GLI1 expression was analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction in pre-treatment fresh frozen tumor biopsies of 12 advanced SCLC patients and mRNA level of GLI1 was compared in short-term vs long-term survivor's samples (stratified by median survival, independent samples t-test). Results Expression of GLI1 mRNA was significantly higher in long-ter…
Electronic excitations in ZnWO4 and ZnxNi1−x WO4 (x = 0.1 − 0.9) using VUV synchrotron radiation
2011
The photoluminescence spectra and luminescence excitation spectra of pure microcrystalline and nano-sized ZnWO4 as well as the Zn x Ni1−x WO4 solid solutions were studied using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron radiation. The samples were also characterized by x-ray powder diffraction. We found that: (i) the shape of the photoluminescence band at 2.5 eV, being due to radiative electron transitions within the [WO6]6− anions, becomes modulated by the optical absorption of Ni2+ ions in the Zn x Ni1−x WO4 solid solutions; and (ii) no significant change in the excitation spectra of Zn0.9Ni0.1WO4 is observed compared to pure ZnWO4. At the same time, a shift of the excitonic bands to smaller en…
Mobilisation of plasmid-mediated blaVEB-1 gene cassette into distinct genomic islands of Proteus mirabilis after ceftazidime exposure
2021
ABSTRACT Objectives We sought to integrate a VEB-1-encoding gene cassette into the integron of the MDR region of genomic islands (GIs) harboured by Proteus mirabilis strains after antibiotic exposure. Methods An IncP1 plasmid from Achromobacter xylosoxidans carrying the cassette array dfrA14–blaVEB-1–aadB was introduced by conjugation into five strains of P. mirabilis: PmBRI, PmABB, PmSCO and Pm2CHAMA harbouring Salmonella GI 1 and PmESC harbouring Proteus GI 1. Circular intermediates of the cassettes were amplified by PCR. blaVEB-harbouring P. mirabilis were exposed to increasing concentrations of ceftazidime each day. Presence of blaVEB-1 in the GI was assessed by PCR. The complete MDR re…
MOZ/TIF2-induced acute myeloid leukaemia in transgenic fish.
2008
The inv(8)(p11q13) chromosomal abnormality, described in acute myeloid leukaemias (AML), fuses the histone acetyl-transferase (HAT) MYST3 (MOZ) gene with another HAT gene, NCOA2 (TIF2). We generated a transgenic zebrafish in which the MYST3/NCOA2 fusion gene was expressed under control of the spi1 promoter. An AML developed in 2 of 180 MYST3/NCOA2-EGFP-expressing embryos, 14 and 26 months after injection of the fusion gene in a one-cell embryo, respectively. This leukaemia was characterised by an extensive invasion of kidneys by myeloid blast cells. This model, which is the first zebrafish model of AML, demonstrates the oncogenic potency of MYST3/NCOA2 fusion gene.
