Sparraussuhteen jännitteiset dialogiset ihanteet
2017
Tutkimus toteutettiin teemahaastattelun (N = 14) keinoin kartoittamalla julkisella sektorilla toimivan kohdeorganisaation sparraajan roolissa toimiv…
Social media in public diplomacy : survey on the social media communication of the Finnish missions abroad
2012
Today, social media is changing the way people communicate by giving the influence to the hands of the people. For organizations, it means that the issues of stakeholders are the focus of the communication, not the organizations. The question no longer is whether to use social media in public relations, but how to use it. In this research the social media communication of the Finnish missions abroad is studied. The missions have implemented social media as a part of their communication mainly since 2010. It is time to evaluate how the social media have been used so far, including an examination of what more social media can offer. It has been suggested that there is a need for re-evaluation…
Organisational Legitimation Strategies in Social Media : How Business Schools Address Declining Ranking
2023
Public relations scholarship has drawn on organisational legitimacy theory to show how organisations appeal to stakeholders’ acceptance of their existence and importance in society. Studies have shown how different types of organisations utilise communication strategies in social media to gain legitimacy. This chapter contributes to public relations research by examining how a sample of business schools implemented legitimation strategies in their social media posts when their legitimacy was threatened. The findings show that when ten world-class European business schools faced declining institutional rankings between 2016 and 2019, they made use of four legitimation strategies—authorisatio…
Conquering the liminal space : Strategic social media influencer communication in the Finnish public sector during the COVID-19 pandemic
2022
Public sector organisations have traditionally used mass media and their own communication channels to communicate urgent matters to citizens. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced these organisations to look for new communication approaches. In Finland, several public-sector organisations collaborated with social media influencers (SMIs) to maximise their efforts in communicating about the measures needed to constrain the spread of the virus. Using a multiple-case study design, this chapter scrutinises four public-sector organisations and their collaboration with SMIs during the pandemic in 2020. We found that public organisations turned to SMIs through influencer marketing and influen…
CSR Communication in Corporate Social Media : An Empirical Investigation of European Top Companies’ Use of Social Media between 2012 and 2020
2023
Social media (SM) platforms have emerged as an online arena in which people can have conversations both about and with organisations. They have become a place where organisations inform key stakeholders about their corporate governance and responsibility initiatives and address accountability concerns. However, early public relations (PR) research on SM and stakeholder engagement found that many organisations use SM as a way to push content instead of engaging their stakeholders. This chapter presents a two-wave study (2012–2013 and 2019–2020) investigating large European corporations’ use of SM for communicating their corporate social responsibility (CSR). We selected ten highly reputable …
Digital strategic communication through digital media-arenas
2022
Digital technologies have empowered an increasingly participatory communication environment that challenges the ability of organizations to maintain control over their messages. In this new environment, stakeholders not only receive these messages through organizational digital media, which this chapter argues are typically understood as transmission channels, they also are able to re-interpret and re-communicate these messages across multiple participatory, omni-directional digital arenas seemingly beyond organizational strategic control. This chapter examines the tension in strategic communication between a traditional message-controlling approach through digital media and a more nuanced …

Kuuntelun ja dialogin kypsyys sosiaalisessa mediassa
2019
Engaging Employees via Digital Technologies : An Integrative Model of Change Management and Communication via Internal Social Media
2023
Internal social media (ISM) has increasingly gained relevance as a networking platform on which employees can share content and actively engage in conversations across functions, regions, and hierarchical levels. Many employees have been working from home, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, using a variety of ISM platforms—a trend that could continue to increase. While the COVID-19 pandemic is only one example of how organisations must continuously change to adapt to a new context, research shows that it is difficult for management to implement changes successfully among employees, and most change initiatives fail. ISM provides a dynamic and interactive communication arena in which em…
