Thymus essential oil extraction, characterization and incorporation in phospholipid vesicles for the antioxidant/antibacterial treatment of oral cavi…

2018

The aim of the work was to extract, characterize, and formulate Thymus capitatus (Tymbra capitata) essential oil in phospholipid vesicles: liposomes, glycerosomes and Penetration Enhancer-containing Vesicles (PEVs). The steam-distilled essential oil was mainly composed of carvacrol. The oil was mixed with lecithin and water to produce liposomes, or different ratios of water/glycerol or water/propylene glycol (PG) to produce glycerosomes and PG-PEVs, respectively. Cryo-TEM showed the formation of unilamellar, spherical vesicles, and light scattering disclosed that their size increased in the presence of glycerol or PG, which improved long-term stability. The formulations were highly biocompa…

Renal and nonrenal clearances of ceftriaxone at the steady-state and its relation to plasma protein binding

1995

Abstract The effect of the saturable plasma protein binding of ceftriaxone on the elimination of this drug was studied under steady-state conditions in the rat. A concentration-dependent increase in the total, renal and nonrenal clearances of total drug (bound + unbound) was observed, and it was related to the increase in the ex vivo unbound fraction of ceftriaxone as the plasma concentration increased. The nonrenal clearance of the unbound ceftriaxone showed a statistically significant decrease as the plasma concentration of the unbound drug at the steady state increased, which indicates that the nonrenal elimination of the drug (mainly by biliary excretion) is a saturable process. Renal c…

Size-dependent tradeoffs in aggressive behavior towards kin

2020

AbstractAggression between juveniles can be unexpected, as their primary motivation is to survive until their reproductive stage. However, instances of aggression, which may escalate to cannibalism, can be vital for survival, although the factors (e.g. genetic or environmental) leading to cannibalism vary across taxa. While cannibalism can greatly accelerate individual growth, it may also reduce inclusive fitness when kin are consumed. As a solution to this problem, some cannibals demonstrate kin discrimination and preferentially attack unrelated individuals. Here, we used both experimental and modeling approaches to consider how physical traits (e.g. size in relation to opponent) and genet…

Alternatīvu substrātu novērtējums bakteriālās celulozes iegūšanai

2022

2021

The presence of foreign students in Italian universities intersects with the debate on citizenship, cooperation, integration and the opportunities offered by the labour market. Moreover, talking about foreign students enrolled in Universities implies the need to remember the heterogeneity between the types of students in relation not only to their origin, their motivations in choosing a course, but also to the problems connected to their legal status. In the text, reference will be made to data on foreign students who, at the end of their high school education, decided to continue their university studies by enrolling in a first-level or single-cycle university course in Italian universitie…

Unique Microbial Catabolic Pathway for the Human Core N-Glycan Constituent Fucosyl-α-1,6-N-Acetylglucosamine-Asparagine

2020

The survival of commensal bacteria in the human gut partially depends on their ability to metabolize host-derived molecules. The use of the glycosidic moiety of N-glycoproteins by bacteria has been reported, but the role of N-glycopeptides or glycoamino acids as the substrates for bacterial growth has not been evaluated. We have identified in Lactobacillus casei strain BL23 a gene cluster (alf-2) involved in the catabolism of the glycoamino acid fucosyl-α-1,6-N-GlcNAc-Asn (6′FN-Asn), a constituent of the core-fucosylated structures of mammalian N-glycoproteins. The cluster consists of the genes alfHC, encoding a major facilitator superfamily (MFS) permease and the α-l-fucosidase AlfC, and t…
