Il palazzo arcivescovile di Palermo, da Simone Beccadelli a Giovanni Paternò. Storia e ricostruzione della configurazione quattrocentesca
2021
In the fifties of the fifteenth century, the archbishop of Palermo Simone Beccadelli started the construction of a new archbishop’s palace in an area between the upper stretch of the ancient Cassaro road and the churchyard created along the southern side of the cathedral, whose arrangement had engaged his predecessors since the thirties of the same century. The architectural undertaking, driven by the primary need to create a residence suitable for the rank of the Palermo archibishop’s chair, therefore also assumes a strong urban significance, helping to define the same space of the churchyard and the monumental cathedral complex as a whole. If a first campaign of works would seem to be con…

Metabolomics analysis and biological investigation of three Malvaceae plants
2019
Introduction: Metabolomics is a fast growing technology that has effectively contributed to many plant-related sciences and drug discovery. Objective: To use the non-targeted metabolomics approach to investigate the chemical profiles of three Malvaceae plants, namely Hibiscus mutabilis L. (Changing rose), H. schizopetalus (Dyer) Hook.f. (Coral Hibiscus), and Malvaviscus arboreus Cav. (Sleeping Hibiscus), along with evaluating their antioxidant and anti-infective potential. Methodology: Metabolic profiling was carried out using liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (LC-HR-ESI-MS) for dereplication purposes. The chemical composition of th…
The component helminth community in six sympatric species of Ardeidae.
2005
We studied the helminth communities in 6 sympatric species of Ardeidae (Ixobrychus minutus (Linnaeus, 1766), Nycticorax nycticorax (Linnaeus, 1758), Bubulcus ibis (Linnaeus, 1758), Egretta garzetta (Linnaeus, 1766), Ardea cinerea (Linnaeus, 1758), and Ardea purpurea (Linnaeus, 1766)) from "La Albufera de Valencia," Spain. The survey revealed 13 species of helminth parasites: 5 digeneans, 2 cestodes, and 6 nematodes. The component helminth communities of the Ardeidae examined are depauperate and conform to the pattern typically found in isolationist communities, probably because of their high trophic dependence on a few prey species. Evenness was positively correlated with richness and abund…
IBIS: The Imager on-board INTEGRAL
2003
The IBIS telescope is the high angular resolution gamma-ray imager on-board the INTEGRAL Observatory, successfully launched from Baikonur (Kazakhstan) the 17th of October 2002. This medium size ESA project, planned for a 2 year mission with possible extension to 5, is devoted to the observation of the gamma-ray sky in the energy range from 3 keV to 10 MeV (Winkler 2001). The IBIS imaging system is based on two independent solid state detector arrays optimised for low ( 15-1000 keV) and high ( 0.175-10.0 MeV) energies surrounded by an active VETO System. This high efficiency shield is essential to minimise the background induced by high energy particles in the highly excentric out of van All…
First observations of the X-ray transient EXO 2030+375 with IBIS/ISGRI
2003
We present a first INTEGRAL observation of the 42s transient X-ray pulsar EXO 2030+375 with IBIS/ISGRI. The source was detected during Cyg X-1 observations in December 2002. We analyzed observations during the outburst period from 9 to 21 December 2002 with a total exposure time of ~770 kiloseconds. EXO 2030+375 was almost always detected during single ~30 minute exposures in the 18-45 energy bands. The source light curve shows the characteristic outburst shape observed in this source.
Herons of French Polynesia. Threats, status and conservation.
2018
8 pages; International audience; In French Polynesia, only three Ardeidae are present: Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis), Tahiti Striated Heron (Butorides striata patruelis) and Eastern Reef-Heron (Egretta sacra), and the last two breed there. The Eastern Reef-Heron is widespread in the Pacific range and its conservation status is least concern. However, the status of the Tahiti Striated Heron is critically endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List. In 2009, only 70 birds were estimated living in Tahiti and thus the entire French Polynesia. Threats are mainly due to the restricted distribution of breeding habitat and habitat destruction. The Tahiti Striated He…
Kicking Tongues de Karen King-Aribisala : Journeys Into Otherness

The Hangman's Game: Karen King-Aribisala's "diary of creation"
2008
The structure of King Aribisala's multi-layered novel "The Hangman's Game" is complex: each narrative thread reverberates onto the other, creating an intricate network of (sometimes distorting) mirrors, suggesting an interconnectedness between past and present, reality and fiction, living and writing. This paper endeavours to explore this complex relationship and to demonstrate how the protean phenomenon of resurgence informs "The Hangman's Game".
