Three Co(II) Metal-Organic Frameworks with Diverse Architectures for Selective Gas Sorption and Magnetic Studies.

2019

Three Co(II) metal–organic frameworks, namely, {[Co2(L)2(OBA)2(H2O)4]·xG}n (1), {[Co(L)0.5(OBA)]·xG}n (2), and {[Co2(L)2(OBA)2(H2O)]·DMA·xG}n (3) [where L = 2,5-bis(3-pyridyl)-3,4-diaza-2,4-hexadiene, H2OBA = 4,4′-oxybisbenzoic acid, DMF = dimethylformamide, DMA = dimethylacetamide, and G denotes disordered guest molecules], have been synthesized under diverse reaction conditions through self-assembly of a bent dicarboxylate and a linear spacer with a Co(II) ion. While 1 is crystallized at room temperature in DMF to form a 2D layer structure, 2 is formed by the assembly of similar components under solvothermal conditions with a 3D network structure. On the other hand, changing the solvent t…

Cross inhibition improves activity selection when switching incurs time costs

2015

Abstract We consider a behavioural model of an animal choosing between two activities, based on positive feedback, and examine the effect of introducing cross inhibition between the motivations for the two activities. While cross-inhibition has previously been included in models of decision making, the question of what benefit it may provide to an animal’s activity selection behaviour has not previously been studied. In neuroscience and in collective behaviour cross-inhibition, and other equivalent means of coupling evidence-accumulating pathways, have been shown to approximate statistically-optimal decision-making and to adaptively break deadlock, thereby improving decision performance. Sw…

A predictive learning approach to optimal load sharing in energy management systems

2019

Given the total power demand, $P_{d}$ , current practice of equal load sharing in the process industry is to distribute the load among power supply units and machines (e.g., diesel/aas/wind turbines) in proportion to the maximum power, i.e., $P_{i}=\frac{p_{\max}^{i}}{\sum_{j}P_{\max}^{j}}P_{d}$ , where $P_{\max}^{i}$ denotes the maximum power of the ithunit. However, the efficiency of power supply units, vary in time and are highly individual, even in the case of units from same brand and model. Thus, by considering and utilizing these individual differences, it is possible to share the load in a more fuel/cost/energy optimal manner. To capture this potential, the work presented in this pa…

Stable radical anions generated from a porous perylenediimide metal-organic framework for boosting near-infrared photothermal conversion

2019

Radical anions of electron-deficient systems are widely used, but are easily reoxidized upon exposure to air. Therefore, the stabilization of radical anions under ambient conditions is of great significance, but still remains a scientific challenge. Herein, perylenediimide is employed to prepare a crystalline metal-organic framework for stabilizing radical anions without extensive chemical modification. The porous, three-dimensional framework of perylenediimide can trap electron donors such as amine vapors and produce radical anions in-situ through photo-induced electron transfer. The radical anions are protected against quenching by shielding effect in air and remain unobstructed in air fo…

Ultrathin films of layered coordination polymers: charge transport and spin crossover at the nanoscale

2019

Metal‐organic frameworks for new technological and environmental applications

2019

Multivariate Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Simultaneous Capture of Organic and Inorganic Contaminants from Water

2019

We report a new water-stable multivariate (MTV) Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) prepared by combining two different oxamide-based metalloligands derived from the natural amino acids L-serine and L-methionine. This unique material features hexagonal channels decorated with two types of flexible and functional 'arms' (-CH2OH and -CH2CH2SCH3) capable to act, synergistically, for the simultaneous and efficient removal of both inorganic (heavy metals like Hg2+, Pb2+ and Tl+) and organic (dyes such as Pyronin Y, Auramine O, Brilliant Green and Methylene Blue) contaminants and, in addition, this MTV-MOF is completely reusable. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) measurements allowed to solve th…

Applied Linear Algebra: Electrical Networks

2016

This chapter shows how mathematical theory is not an abstract subject which has no connection with the real world. On the contrary, this entire book is written by stating that mathematics in general, and algebra in this case, is an integrating part of every day real life and that the professional life of computational scientists and engineers requires a solid mathematical background. In order to show how the contents of the previous chapters have an immediate technical application, the last chapter of this book describes a core engineering subject, i.e. electrical networks, as an algebraic exercise. Furthermore, this chapter shows how the combination of the algebraic topics give a natural r…

Stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction mediated by magnetic nanoparticles-metal organic framework composite: Determination of N-nitrosamines in…

2019

Abstract A new analytical method based on the recently proposed stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction (SBSDME) technique has been developed to determine eight hazardous N-nitrosamines in cosmetic products. As previous step, a simple clean-up is carried out with hexane to remove those highly lipophilic compounds that disturb the SBSDME step. Subsequently, SBSDME is performed by using magnetic nanoparticles–metal organic framework composite, CoFe2O4/MIL-101(Fe), as sorbent to entrap the target analytes, which are later chemically desorbed and measured by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). The experimental variables related to the SBSDME procedure were studied to…

Step-by-Step Growth of HKUST-1 on Functionalized TiO2 Surface: An Efficient Material for CO2 Capture and Solar Photoreduction

2018

The present study reports on a simple preparation strategy of a hybrid catalyst, TiO2/HKUST-1, containing TiO2 anatase nanoparticles (NPs) with tailored morphology and photocatalytic activity coupled with a porous metal-organic framework (MOF), namely HKUST-1, as an advanced material for the CO2 photocatalytic reduction. In detail, TiO2/HKUST-1 catalyst was prepared via an easy slow-diffusion method combined with a step-by-step self-assembly at room temperature. The growth of crystalline HKUST-1 onto titania surface was achieved by functionalizing TiO2 nanocrystals, with phosphoesanoic acid (PHA), namely TiO2-PHA, which provides an intimate contact between MOF and TiO2. The presence of a cr…
