The paper examines the functions of awareness in classroom communication. The focus is on interactionist approaches, conversational analysis and multimodal analysis methods. The concept of awareness can be analyzed from an inner or an external perspective. According to the perspective adopted, different approaches to the study of classroom discourse can be designed. The three approaches considered in the paper trace the development of awareness from language (learning) awareness to interactional awareness and thus offer a prospect of a deeper understanding of classroom discourse.

This paper presents a new analysis of the speech delivered by Cicero on behalf of Milo (pro Milone), who had been charged with the murder of Clodius. It suggests that Cicero’s defensive strategy aimed from the beginning to get an acquittal on two different grounds. The first one was based on the reasoning that Clodius’ murder was committed lawfully in self-defense. The second one was based on the argument that Clodius’ killing was in the best interest of the state. Both do not have to be conflicting. First World War Diaries: Making the Private Public

This article analyses several World War I Diaries written by soldiers on the Front. Starting with the circumstances of publication and their effects on the text, the article addresses the passage of these very private texts into public life, before turning to the role played by the diaries for the soldiers who write them. Studies of the diary as a genre are used to show how war diaries fit into the more general genre. Finally the article turns to the reception of these works, by studying what part literary distance may play for the soldiers keeping a diary, and by arguing that the task of making sense of these texts has been transferred to present-day readers.

L’articolo si propone di esaminare il significato specifico della beneficentia a Roma antica in rapporto alla rivalutazione del ruolo degli inopes come destinatari delle forme di liberalitas all’interno della rappresentazione fornita da Cicerone nel De officiis e da Seneca nel De beneficiis. Se Cicerone rivendica l’utilità del dono ai poveri (purché meritevoli) evidenziando come esso comporti un ritorno non solo in termini di riconoscenza ma anche di gloria (Off. 2, 63; 69-71), Seneca si serve dell’apologo di Eschine (Ben. 1, 8-9) per dimostrare come il pauper, benché privo di mezzi, possa trovare in se stesso le risorse più adeguate al contraccambio virtuoso.
