A heuristic fuzzy algorithm for assessing and managing tourism sustainability

2019

“Smartness” and “sustainability” are gaining growing attention from both practitioners and policy makers. “Smartness” and “sustainability” assessments are of crucial importance for directing, in a systemic perspective, the decision-making process toward sustainability and smart growth objectives. Sustainability assessment is a major challenge due to the multidisciplinary aspects involved that make the evaluation process complex and hinder the effectiveness of available monitoring tools. To achieve the assessment objective, we introduce an enhanced fuzzy logic-based framework for handling the inherent uncertainty and vagueness of the involved variables: we apply our approach to Italy, and we…

The Eloquence of Publius Sulpicius Rufus and Gaius Aurelius Cotta in Cicero's Brutus

2018

The purpose of this chapter is to investigate the personalities of Publius Sulpicius Rufus and Gaius Aurelius Cotta, that illustrate the Roman eloquence at the beginning of the first century BC with particular regard to the wide section of the Ciceronian Brutus, the treatise in which they are protagonists of an intense confrontation in order to reflect on different styles of eloquence. On the other hand, a survey on the characteristics of their eloquence, conducted in the absence of direct evidence that provides objective feedback about their oratorical qualities, also makes possible to analyse the importance (and in some cases the indispensability) of Cicero’s opinion.

A Realistic Model to Support Rescue Operations After an Earthquake via UAVs

2022

In this paper, we consider the problem of completely flying over an area just hit by an earthquake with a fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to opportunely direct rescue teams. The cooperation between UAVs ensures that the search for possible survivors can be faster and more effective than the solutions currently implemented by civil protection. To study this scenario, we introduce the Cover by Multitrips with Priorities (CMP) problem, which tries to keep into account all the main real-life issues connected to the flight and coordination of the UAVs. We conduct a theoretical study to estimate the best number of UAVs and additional batteries, to give indications to the organization tha…

Isolation and use of microsatellite loci in Melicertus kerathurus (Crustacea, Penaeidae).

2010

Melicertus kerathurus represents an economically important resource for fisheries and aquaculture. Seven microsatellite loci from 373 specimens of M. kerathurus collected in different parts of the Mediterranean and NE Atlantic were identified. Four of these microsatellites showed a moderate level of polymorphism, with 2 to 14 alleles per locus, whereas three had a monomorphic profile. Observed and expected heterozygosity ranged between 0.28 to0.64 and 0.28 to 0.65, respectively. Three microsatellite loci deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in some populations, with a deficit of heterozygosity. Mean Fst values showed significant differentiation among sample sites analysed and indicate t…

2013

The contribution of Architecture to the redefinition of the Brera Academy. A comparison of the sorry state of the republican education and its places with international architecture that exemplifies a different attitude towards culture such as the Openbare Bibliotheek in Amsterdam, evidencing a serious Italian short fall. The author proposes an alternative project starting with the cancellation of all the projects and competitions so far proposed in an uncoordinated manner, from the Grande Brera project to the unacceptable transfer of the Academy. Furthermore, he proposes an international com- petition for the whole Brera complex, the Pinacoteca, Academy and Observatory, that would enable st…
