Un Quijote de Picasso

2005

Changes in Adrenoceptors and G-Protein-Coupled Receptor Kinase 2 in <smlcap>L</smlcap>-NAME-Induced Hypertension Compared to Spontaneous …

2014

This work compares the expression of adrenoceptors (ARs) and G-protein-coupled receptor kinase (GRK) 2 (RT-PCR and immunoblotting) and functional responses in conductance (aorta) and resistance vessels (mesenteric resistance arteries; MRA) in two different models of rat hypertension: hypertension induced by chronic treatment with <smlcap>L</smlcap>-NAME (NG-nitro-<smlcap>L</smlcap>-arginine methyl-ester) (<smlcap>L</smlcap>-NAME-treated rats; LNHR), and genetically induced hypertension (spontaneously hypertensive rats; SHR). Changes found in the aorta, but not in the MRA, were: (1) a loss of contractile capacity, more evidently in α…

The Impact of Pre-Operative Malperfusion on Outcome in Acute Type A Aortic Dissection

2015

Abstract Background Malperfusion adversely affects outcomes in patients with acute type A aortic dissection, but reliable quantitative data are lacking. Objectives The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of various forms of malperfusion on early outcome. Methods A total of 2,137 consecutive patients enrolled in GERAADA (German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A) who underwent surgery between 2006 and 2010, of whom 717 (33.6%) had any kind of pre-operative malperfusion, were retrospectively analyzed. Results All-cause 30-day mortality was 16.9% and varied substantially according to the number of organ systems affected by malperfusion (none, 12.6%; 1 system, 21.3%; 2 systems,…

Value and limitations of transesophageal echocardiography in the evaluation of aortic prostheses.

1993

Results of 34 transesophageal (TEE) studies in patients with suspected aortic prosthetic dysfunction were compared with transthoracic echocardiographic (TTE) results and to anatomic findings. Mass lesions noted at surgery (autopsy) were correctly described in 93% by TEE versus 43% by TTE. Abscesses were detected in 88% by TEE versus 18% by TTE. Bioprosthetic degeneration was visualized in 88% versus 38% and prosthetic obstruction correctly identified in 75% versus 50% by TEE and TTE, respectively. Anatomic aortic regurgitant lesions were identified in 96% by TEE versus 77% by TTE, whereas the correct origin was detected in 88% of cases by TEE versus 54% of cases by TTE. TEE provides valuabl…

Qualitative Analysis of Aphid and Primary Parasitoid Trophic Relations of Genus <I>Alloxysta</I> (Hymenoptera: Cynipoidea: Figitidae: Cha…

2014

Charipinae hyperparasitoids affect effectiveness of the primary parasitoids of aphids by decreasing their abundance and modifying their behavior. As a result, increase of aphid populations can cause severe yield losses in some crops. Therefore, ecological studies on the subfamily Charipinae have a great economical and biological importance. Host specificity of these hyperparasitoids is still under debate and for many Charipinae species very little is known about their trophic relations. Here, we give a comprehensive overview of the trophic relationships between the Charipinae species of the genus Alloxysta Forster and their aphid and primary parasitoids hosts, worldwide. Within this subfami…

Genetic polymorphisms affecting the phenotypic expression in familial hypercholesterolemia

2004

The clinical expression of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is highly variable even in patients carrying the same LDL receptor (LDL-R) gene mutation. This variability might be due to environmental factors as well as to modifying genes affecting lipoprotein metabolism. We investigated Apo E (2, 3, 4), MTP (-493G/T), Apo B (-516C/T), Apo A-V (-1131T/C), HL (-514C/T and -250G/A), FABP-2 (A54T), LPL (D9N, N291S, S447X) and ABCA1 (R219K) polymorphisms in 221 unrelated FH index cases and 349 FH relatives with defined LDL-R gene mutations. We found a significant and independent effect of the following polymorphisms on: (i) plasma LDL-C (Apo E, MTP and Apo B); (ii) plasma HDL-C (HL, …

Opposite vascular activity of (R)-apomorphine and its oxidised derivatives. Endothelium-dependent vasoconstriction induced by the auto-oxidation meta…

2003

We have synthetised a series of oxidised apomorphine derivatives (orto and para quinones 2-5), in order to analyse their vascular activity. We have performed radioligand binding assays on rat cortical membranes and functional studies on rat aortic rings. Instead the relaxant activity exhibited by (R)-apomorphine, o-quinones 2, 4, show contractile activity dependent on endothelium in rat aortic rings. Compound 2, the main metabolite of (R)-apomorphine auto-oxidation, was the product which showed enhanced contractile activity by a complex mechanism related to activation of Ca(2+) channels through release and/or inhibition of endothelial factors. Moreover, this compound disrupts the endothelia…

The stakeholder's perception of socio-economic impacts generated by COVID-19 pandemic within the Italian aquaculture systems.

2021

From the beginning of March 2020 and for the following two and half months, many European countries comprising Italy have been forced into an unprecedented lockdown, allowing only the opening of essential economic activities needed to address the problems created by the pandemic (e.g. sanitary, food provision). Like many sectors of the Italian economy, aquaculture has also slowed down due to the ongoing emergency and the consequent closure of business. In our study we provided a ‘snapshot’ of the socio-economic effects of the lockdown on the aquaculture sector in Italy, immediately following the adoption of the COVID-19 restrictions as they were perceived by the workers. Although it was sur…
