2016

The Electronic Historical Latvian Dictionary Based on the Corpus of Early Written Latvian Texts This article deals with the development of the Electronic Historical Latvian Dictionary (http://www.tezaurs.lv/lvvv) based on the Corpus of Early Written Latvian Texts (http://www.korpuss.lv/senie/). Some issues concerning the compilation and processing of the corpus data are discussed and the main sources added to the Corpus during the four-year project are described: the 16th c. Czy polskość jest (słownikowo) definiowalna?

2017

Can Polishness be (Lexicographically) Defined? The author argues that the essence of Polishness (polskość) is found in the Polish language, that is, in the language system, as well as in texts written in Polish; hence, it should be possible to reproduce and define the very concept of Polishness. So far, it should be stressed, the definitions of the concept of Polishness found in dictionaries of the Polish language have not provided any information on components of the concept under scrutiny. In this paper, the author proposes, first, a number of methods that enable one to extract the components of Polishness from the whole variety of text types and genres, and, second, a framework designed t…

Sequestrati dalla vendetta: “rimanere chiusi fuori dall’oggetto”

2013

They rather decline it along some signifiers: non identity and mafia group which colonizes and subjugates the individual’s psychism. Powerful and merciless family ghosts who prevent from building original and autonomous selves. Personalities kneaded with emotional indifference and vindictiveness. Al di là del sintomo. Il gruppo psicodinamico nelle dipendenze

2012

2020

Several sicilian religious celebrations are characterized by a particular mode of processional transport of the fercoli with the statues of the Saints. These are made to run and dance by devoted young men, often competing with each other, both on the streets of the inhabited centers and, in rare cases, inside the religious buildings. This mode of transport is called, especially in the countries of the western Agrigento’s area, “rigattiata”. Many evidences, first of all the agonal climate, suggest that the same performative logic presides over the ritual execution of the “rigattiati” and the ergological action of the work in the fields. The competitive and conflicting climate between two or …

A tipper full of skinned limbs : fiction and the Northern Ireland Troubles

2013

This article discusses the potential of a fictional story, a novel, to challenge political narratives in a divided society. I will analyse three novels set during the ”Troubles” (1960s-1998) in Northern Ireland, looking at the ways in which each novel navigates the narrow space between Northern Irish unionism and nationalism, the two dominant narratives in Northern Ireland. I will read the novels politically, interpreting them as rhetorical narratives holding the power to challenge commonplace assumptions. I will apply the ideas put forward by James Phelan concerning the inherent rhetorical nature of narrative in fiction. I will also present Ann Rigney’s concept of cultural memory as an ana…

Antônio Etíope e Benedito, o mouro: o escravinho Santo e o preto eremita

2009

This article discusses the process of canonization of two African slaves, Benedict and Anthony, who were taken to Sicily through a combination of privacy wars, the slave trade and conflicts between Christian states and the Ottoman Empire in the context of modern-era Mediterranean. Along with other "servants of God" with exemplary lives, they both joined the Franciscan Order and were elevated to the altar after their deaths, while enslaved Christians in African territory "took the turban" with some even became local Muslim authorities. Sicily, a Spanish vice-kingdom near the northern African coast, was a cultural crossroad and for at the same time a privileged laboratory for the activity of …

The Strategy of Harm Reduction in Work with People Addicted to Drugs and Alcohol

2016

The policy of EU Member States, the United States, South America and Australia is heading towards the restructuring of the support system for addicts by implementing actions meant to limit the health and social damages resulting from the use of psychoactive substances. Many countries offer access to low-threshold programmes whereby the participant is not forced to maintain abstinence or submit to the excessive rules and obligations of a rehabilitation center. Harm reduction is a philosophy based on pragmatic and realistic goals of working with addicts and users. It assumes that each change, even the smallest, is important and should be supported. Harm reduction programmes usually function i…
