Application of information and communication technology for internationalization of Nigerian small- and medium-sized enterprises

2019

Information and communication technology (ICT) has fundamentally transformed business transactions. While its uses have become ubiquitous in the advanced economies, emerging and developing economies are still struggling with the mode and manner of the deployment of ICT for business. Thus, this study seeks to investigate how small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) utilize ICT in Nigeria for business internationalization. To achieve the goal of the study, a mixed‐method was employed. A questionnaire was administered to 265 people consisting of SMEs staff, managers, and owners. Similarly, interviews were conducted with seven SME decision makers. Findings revealed that Nigerian SMEs used ICT…

Three Halves of a Whole : Redefining East and West in UNESCO’s East-West Major Project 1957-1966

2017

In 1946 Julian Huxley, UNESCO’s rst Director-General, suggested that two opposing philosophies of life were confronting each other from the East and the West, setting the focus on the cultural aspect of this polarisation and de ning the possibility of an East- West conflict as the main threat to world peace. A decade later, in 1957, UNESCO launched The Major Project on the Mutual Appreciation of Eastern and Western Cultural Values to promote its ideas of intercultural understanding as a means to maintaining peace. The core concepts of the Project, East and West, were not strictly defined. Here East and West, as concepts, fit Reinhart Koselleck’s definition of Grundbegri…

Visibility without voice: Media witnessing irregular migrants in BBC online news journalism

2016

In the analysis of journalistic representation of irregular migration to Europe, rather little attention is given to the variation of modes and genres of journalism. Most studies focus on text in ‘old media’ and the news genre. This article analyses affordances of different modalities and genres of online journalism in framing irregular migrants. Media framing in BBC online news coverage of a mediatised conflict in Spain, defined as a ‘migration crisis’, is analysed with multimodal social semiotics. While mediation makes global audiences witness tragedies at Europe's borders and online journalism affords more voice and deliberation for migrant sources, the frames of threat and victim domina…

El crimen de agresión : ¿es posible su persecución judicial internacional?

2021

The paper analyses the crime of aggression, in particular the recent activation of the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court over it and the main obstacles to its effective prosecution, taking into consideration the low number of States Parties that have ratified the Amendments that regulate it

On the friction/tangential restitution problem: Independent friction-restitution modeling of sphere rebound with arbitrary spin

2023

Most descriptions of collision events introduce coefficients of friction and tangential restitution which vary significantly with the impact angle, in contrast with the independence of the normal coefficient of restitution with this parameter. A redefinition of the coefficients of friction and tangential restitution based on the idea that friction and restitution effects can be treated as being mutually independent, provides a satisfactory description of experimental data using a ‘constant’ restitution coefficient independent on the impact angle. This independent friction-restitution modeling is developed here for the rebound of a homogeneous sphere having an arbitrary spin on a rough massi…

The Conference Reimagined. Postcards, Letters, and Camping Together in Undressed Places

2019

In this paper, five authors account for the rethinking of a conference as a series of postcards, letters, rules and silent moments so that traditional hierarchies of knowledge could be overturned or, at least, sidelined. We recount how the place we convened was enlisted as an actor and the dramas and devices we applied to encounter it. We use this accounting to problematize the conventional practices of goal-oriented meetings and co-authored papers as forms of academic meaning-making. In finding a meeting point where expertise was disorientated and status undressed, we were able to investigate the idea of co-being between human and nonhuman realities as the step social theory needs to take …

Early Oral Language Comprehension, Task Orientation, and Foundational Reading Skills as Predictors of Grade 3 Reading Comprehension

2016

The present five-year longitudinal study from preschool to grade 3 examined the developmental associations among oral language comprehension, task orientation, reading precursors, and reading fluency, as well as their role in predicting grade 3 reading comprehension. Ninety Finnish-speaking students participated in the study. The students’ oral language comprehension (vocabulary knowledge, listening comprehension, and inference making) and task orientation were assessed in preschool, kindergarten, and grade 3. Reading precursors (letter knowledge and phonological awareness) were assessed at the first two timepoints and reading fluency at the third timepoint. Structural equation modeling sho…

ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile : Finnlakeviridae

2020

Finnlakeviridae is a family of icosahedral, internal membrane-containing bacterial viruses with circular, single-stranded DNA genomes. The family includes the genus, Finnlakevirus, with the species, Flavobacterium virus FLiP. Flavobacterium phage FLiP was isolated with its Gram-negative host bacterium from a boreal freshwater habitat in Central Finland in 2010. It is the first described single-stranded DNA virus with an internal membrane and shares minimal sequence similarity with other known viruses. The virion organization (pseudo T=21 dextro) and major capsid protein fold (double-β-barrel) resemble those of Pseudoalteromonas phage PM2 (family Corticoviridae), which has a double-stranded …

ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Sphaerolipoviridae 2023

2023

Members of the family Sphaerolipoviridae have non-enveloped tailless icosahedral virions with a protein-rich internal lipid membrane. The genome is a linear double-stranded DNA of about 30 kbp with inverted terminal repeats and terminal proteins. The capsid has a pseudo triangulation T=28 dextro symmetry and is built of two major capsid protein types. Spike complexes decorate fivefold vertices. Sphaerolipoviruses have a narrow host range and a lytic life cycle, infecting haloarchaea in the class Halobacteria (phylum Euryarchaeota). This is a summary of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Report on the family Sphaerolipoviridae, which is available at ictv.global/report/…

ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile : Simuloviridae 2023

2023

The family Simuloviridae includes tailless icosahedral viruses with an internal lipid membrane. The capsid is constructed from two major capsid proteins, both with a single jelly-roll fold. The genome is a circular dsDNA molecule of 16–19 kb. All members infect halophilic archaea in the class Halobacteria (phylum Euryarchaeota) and are temperate viruses, their proviruses residing in host cells as extrachromosomal episomes. Once the lytic life cycle is triggered, production of virions causes cell lysis. This is a summary of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Report on the family Simuloviridae, which is available at ictv.global/report/simuloviridae. peerReviewed
