First North American Record of the Old World CylapineFulvius subnitensPoppius (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae) from Virginia, with Descriptions and …
2011
Abstract. The first North American record for Fulvius subnitens Poppius is reported based on one specimen collected in southcentral Virginia. Fulvius anthocoroides (Reuter), Fulvius imbecilis (Say), Fulvius slateri Wheeler, and Fulvius subnitens are diagnosed and described, and color images of adults, updated distributions, a review of feeding habits, and an identification key are provided. For each species, the nomenclatural history and most important citations are given.
Olfactory function in children assessed with psychophysical and electrophysiological techniques
2007
International audience; The olfactory information processing abilities of children undergo changes during early life. The aims of the present study were to describe these changes and to probe for their electrophysiological correlates. These aims were investigated in two experiments. In Experiment 1, responses of 146 subjects (3-12 years) were tested with psychophysical tools. Approximately 2/3 of the subjects completed the olfactory tests ("Sniffin' Sticks"). In Experiment 2, 12 additional subjects (3-10 years) were tested with electrophysiological tools. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in response to olfactory stimulation with H(2)S. Results from Experiment 1 indicated that d…
Genetic variation at 9p22.2 and ovarian cancer risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers
2011
[Background]: Germline mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are associated with increased risks of breast and ovarian cancers. Although several common variants have been associated with breast cancer susceptibility in mutation carriers, none have been associated with ovarian cancer susceptibility. A genome-wide association study recently identified an association between the rare allele of the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs3814113 (ie, the C allele) at 9p22.2 and decreased risk of ovarian cancer for women in the general population. We evaluated the association of this SNP with ovarian cancer risk among BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carriers by use of data from the Consortium of Investi…
NCOG-10. FACTORS INFLUENCING NEUROCOGNITIVE FUNCTION IN PATIENTS WITH NEUROEPITHELIAL TUMORS
2017
Though cognitive function is proven to be an independent predictor of survival in patients with intrinsic brain tumors, higher cognitive functions are still seldom studied. Aim of this study was to assess neurocognitive function and to identify risk factors for neurocognitive deficits in patients with intrinsic brain tumors. 103 patients with primary neuroepithelial tumors who received tumor resections or biopsies were included in this prospective study. The following data was acquired: mini-mental state examination, preoperative tumor volume, WHO grade, tumor entity and location, and the Karnofsky performance status scale. Furthermore, patients conducted an extensive neuropsychological tes…
Use of the cumulative amount of serum-free light chains (sFLC) at diagnosis and PET2 for the early identification of high risk of treatment failure i…
2012
8083 Background: Since early identification of patients (pts) at risk of failure is the mainstay of a risk-adapted therapy, we explored the prognostic impact of the sFLC assay in cHL, whose biology involves ongoing activation of polyclonal B-cells. Methods: Serum samples from 248 untreated cHL pts were tested by the Freelite assay. Median age was 32 yrs (r 15-85), males 47%, stages: I (5%), II (51%), III (17%), IV (27%); B-sympt. 60%, E-disease, 38%; bulky >10 cm, 44%; ESR > 65, 42%; IPS ≥3, 39%. Early unfavorable disease (GHLSG/ EORTC) was respectively found in 33% and 42% of cases. ABVD was given to 89% of pts. Results: Absolute FLC levels were summed into a sFLC(κ+λ) variable and …

Mechanisms of Raf-1 Kinase Inhibitor Protein Dysregulation in Triple-Negative Breast Cancers and Identification of Possible Novel Therapeutic Approac…
2014
Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs) are a heterogenous group of breast cancers characterized by poor prognosis because they are not amenable to targeted therapies. We have taken into account that altered expression of Raf-1 kinase inhibitor protein (RKIP), a tumor and metastasis suppressor and a promoter of drug-induced apoptosis, is frequent in TNBCs and may be involved in their aggressive biology. Interestingly, the analysis of the possible mechanisms of RKIP downregulation in TNBCs permits the identification and recapitulation of different possible approaches, including epigenetic modulation, e.g., by DNA demethylating agents or histone deacetylase inhibition, and NF-κB inhibition. Th…
Nonlinear Modeling of DC/DC Converters Using the Hammerstein's Approach
2007
This paper deals with the modelling of highly nonlinear switching power-electronics converters using black-box identification methods. The duty cycle and the output voltage are chosen, respectively, as the input and the output of the model. A nonlinear Hammerstein-type mathematical model, consisting of a static nonlinearity and a linear time-invariant model, is considered in order to cope with the well-known limitations of the more common small-signal models, i.e. the entity of the variations of the variables around a well-defined steady-state operating point and the incorrect reproduction of the steady-state behavior corresponding to input step variations from the above steady-state operat…
Optical Imaging and Spectroscopy of Atomically Precise Armchair Graphene Nanoribbons
2019
We report the optical imaging and absorption spectroscopy on atomically precise armchair graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) on insulating fused silica substrates. This is achieved by controlling light polarization on macroscopically aligned GNRs which greatly enhances the optical contrast of the submonolayer GNRs on the insulating substrates. We measure the linear absorption spectra of 7-armchair and 9-armchair GNRs in this study, and the experimental data agree qualitatively with ab inito calculation results. The polarization spectroscopy technique enables an unambiguous optical identification of GNRs and provides a rapid tool to characterize the transferred film over a large area.
Regression analysis to design a solar thermal collector for occasional use
2020
Abstract Optimal design of a solar thermal system is necessary to minimize payback time and to diffuse renewable energy use for Domestic Hot Water production in residential areas. More accurate design is crucial in the case of seasonal or occasional use of the system; indeed, the standard criteria generally applied to a design system for continuous use, can lead to considerable over-sizing. To speed up the design phase and to help the planner in the identification of the best solution without any complex evaluation or long computational time, it would be interesting to have available a simpler method than the standard procedures, but one that is reliable and accurate for the evaluation of t…
