Professional mathematics teacher identity: analysis of reflective narratives from discourses and activities
2012
Published verson of an article in the journal: Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10857-012-9216-1 This article focuses on the methodological use of reflective narratives from discourses and activities of an experienced primary teacher as evidence of her professional identity. The teacher’s reflective narratives emerge from her participation in a 3-year developmental and research project, Learning Communities in Mathematics, conducted at the University of Agder (UiA) in Norway. As background for our study, we firstly present the teacher in action with her sixth-grade pupils in a mathematics lesson, and then analyse sele…
Destinationskrimis als identitätsstiftende Kulturräume. Die Stadt Valencia in Lokalkrimis deutscher Autoren
2021

Representations of individuals in discourses of laïcité from Le Monde : confirming or challenging the republican framework of identity?
2017
In recent decades, the notions of laïcité and identity have been subjects of controversy in France. The two concepts have become sufficiently co-associated since the 1990s to ensure each almost systematically entails the other. Findings from previous studies have pointed out harmful implications of this pervasive association for minorities in France, especially Muslims. This study examines further the ways laïcité and identity are interwoven by exploring who is represented (and how) in newspaper articles from Le Monde dealing with laïcité. Informed by critical intercultural communication scholarship, intersectionality, and a Foucaultian approach to discourse, this study pays particular atte…
Kliszczacka muzyka. O współczesnej sprawczości dawnych ludoznawczych etykiet
2022
Kliszczak Gorals are among the least known and most understudied Polish Goral communities. Research into the musical traditions of the areas they inhabit is even more modest. In the article, an attempt is made to determine whether the distinctiveness of this ethnographic group – established by 19th-century ethnographers based on an artifact of material culture, namely a characteristic detail on the trousers of male folk costume – has also ever manifested itself in music. I rely on my own field research, conducted in the years 2010–2017, mainly among organizers of folk culture, singers, folk music bands and regional music bands in the Kliszczak area, which I in accordance with ethnographic l…
A cultural analysis of the visual signs in the Zapatistas websites
2012
A political movement initiated in Mexico known as Zapatism is analysed through the visual objects displayed in their websites on the Internet. The objective is to make a cultural analysis and interpretation of the visual representation of Zapatistas websites, to expose their visual identity through the most salient visual signs and their corresponding cultural meanings. The analytical method introduced in this study is divided in three major aims: consolidating a pool of images retrieved from Zapatistas websites, finding patterns of visual elements within these images, and providing an interpretation for the visual signs emerging from such patterns. In the analysis, three images emerged as …
The professional agency of teacher educators amid academic discourses
2012
Agency has been seen as fundamental in the renegotiation of professional identities. However, it is unclear how teacher educators exercise their professional agency in their work, and how multiple discourses frame and restrict the practice of their professional agency. This study examines how teacher educators practise agency in negotiating their professional identities amid the multiple discourses emerging from the academic context of their work. The aim was to investigate educators’ locally expressed professional agency in the context of the more global discourses that may construct teacher educator identities. The analysis made use of applied thematic discursive analysis to address patte…
Entextualization and resemiotization as resources for identification in social media
2014
Drawing on insights provided by linguistic anthropology, the study of multisemioticity and research in computer-mediated discourse (CMD), this chapter discusses how entextualization (Bauman & Briggs, 1990; Silverstein & Urban, 1996; Blommaert, 2005, pp. 46–8) and resemiotization (Iedema, 2003; Scollon & Scollon, 2004, pp. 101–3; Scollon, 2008) are key resources for identity work in social media. Three key arguments inspire and give direction to our discussion, each of them laying down touchstones for language scholars who wish to investigate identity in social media. First, for many individuals and social or cultural groups, social media are increasingly significant grassroots arenas for in…
A nomad from within? : resilient identities in an interconnected world : Russian-speaking immigrant women in Italy (re)-constructing the self
2017
Within the current political context of global migration the concept of ‘identity’ has played a major role in the struggle between assimilative and exclusionary practices and policies. Such policies in many cases are the result of a wronged imagination about human identity and the subjects who possess it. In my master’s thesis I conceptualize ‘resilient identity’ as an innovative and highly needed approach to studying today’s constantly transforming subjectivity. Through the analysis of the self-narratives of Russian-speaking female immigrants in Italy, I explore how ‘resilience of identity’ is constructed and manifests itself. My thesis additionally brings together the philosophical and th…
