Serum sex-hormone binding globulin and cortisol concentrations are associated with overreaching during strenuous military training

2011

The purpose was (a) to study the effect of an 8-week Finnish military basic training period (BT) on physical fitness, body composition, mood state, and serum biochemical parameters among new conscripts; (b) to determine the incidence of overreaching (OR); and (c) to evaluate whether initial levels or training responses differ between OR and noOR subjects. Fifty-seven males (19.7 ± 0.3 years) were evaluated before and during BT. Overreaching subjects had to fulfill 3 of 5 criteria: decreased aerobic physical fitness (VO2max), increased rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in 45-minute submaximal test at 70% of VO2max or sick absence from these tests, increased somatic or emotional symptoms of …

Mboat7 down-regulation by hyper-insulinemia induces fat accumulation in hepatocytes.

2020

Background: Naturally occurring variation in Membrane-bound O-acyltransferase domain-containing 7 (MBOAT7), encoding for an enzyme involved in phosphatidylinositol acyl-chain remodelling, has been associated with fatty liver and hepatic disorders. Here, we examined the relationship between hepatic Mboat7 down-regulation and fat accumulation. Methods: Hepatic MBOAT7 expression was surveyed in 119 obese individuals and in experimental models. MBOAT7 was acutely silenced by antisense oligonucleotides in C57Bl/6 mice, and by CRISPR/Cas9 in HepG2 hepatocytes. Findings: In obese individuals, hepatic MBOAT7 mRNA decreased from normal liver to steatohepatitis, independently of diabetes, inflammatio…

Dysfunction of attention switching networks in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

2019

Objective To localise and characterise changes in cognitive networks in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) using source analysis of mismatch negativity (MMN) waveforms. Rationale The MMN waveform has an increased average delay in ALS. MMN has been attributed to change detection and involuntary attention switching. This therefore indicates pathological impairment of the neural network components which generate these functions. Source localisation can mitigate the poor spatial resolution of sensor-level EEG analysis by associating the sensor-level signals to the contributing brain sources. The functional activity in each generating source can therefore be individually measured and investigat…

Fluency and rule breaking behaviour in the frontal cortex

2020

Design (DF) and phonemic fluency tests (FAS; D-KEFS, 2001) are commonly used to investigate voluntary generation. Despite this, several important issues remain poorly investigated. In a sizeable sample of patients with focal left or right frontal lesion we established that voluntary generation performance cannot be accounted for by fluid intelligence. For DF we found patients performed significantly worse than healthy controls (HC) only on the switch condition. However, no significant difference between left and right frontal patients was found. In contrast, left frontal patients were significantly impaired when compared with HC and right frontal patients on FAS. These lateralization findin…

Advanced numerical treatment of an accurate SPH method

2019

The summation of Gaussian kernel functions is an expensive operation frequently encountered in scientific simulation algorithms and several methods have been already proposed to reduce its computational cost. In this work, the Improved Fast Gauss Transform (IFGT) [1] is properly applied to the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method [2] in order to speed up its efficiency. A modified version of the SPH method is considered in order to overcome the loss of accuracy of the standard formulation [3]. A suitable use of the IFGT allows us to reduce the computational effort while tuning the desired accuracy into the SPH framework. This technique, coupled with an algorithmic design for exploit…

Numerical insights of an improved SPH method

2018

In this paper we discuss on the enhancements in accuracy and computational demanding in approximating a function and its derivatives via Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics. The standard method is widely used nowadays in various physics and engineering applications [1],[2],[3]. However it suffers of low approximation accuracy at boundaries or when scattered data distributions is considered. Here we reformulate the original method by means of the Taylor series expansion and by employing the kernel function and its derivatives as projection functions and integrating over the problem domain [3]. In this way, accurate estimates of the function and its derivatives are simultaneously provided and no …
