The effect of infusion of a modified Tyrode's solution (“high K+-low Na+ solution”) into the isolated chicken heart on the content of acetylcholine in the tissue and the overflow of acetylcholine were compared to those evoked by vagal stimulation. 2. The release of acetylcholine was measured over 15-min periods of either stimulation of the vagus nerves (40 V, 1 ms) at 20 Hz or of infusion of the high K+-low Na+ solution (108 mM K+, 44 mM Na+). 3. Continence and a positive body image are important, especially to the adolescent patient. Since 1964 we have used ureterosigmoidostomy and have achieved a complete continence rate of 92.3%. The creation of a low-pressure reservoir by antimesenteric splitting of the recto-sigmoid eliminated many of the shortcomings of ureterosigmoidostomy. This procedure is termed the sigma-rectum pouch and has been applied in six children to date. Mainz-pouch bladder augmentation or substitution has been performed in 20 children, 17 of whom are completely continent. The results of the modified Young Dees procedure were disappointing. We report on our experience with 7 pregnancies in 6 women who previously underwent reconstruction of the urinary tract with a continent urinary diversion using an ileo caecal segment (Mainz-Pouch I), ureterosigmoidostomy or bladder augmentation. Urinary tract infection and upper tract dilatation were the only complications during pregnancy which required bilateral nephrostomies in one case. All other sequelae were handled conservatively. Staphylococcus epidermidis is an opportunistic pathogen associated with foreign body infections and nosocomial sepsis. The pathogenicity of S. epidermidis is mostly due to its ability to colonize indwelling polymeric devices and form a thick, multilayered biofilm. Biofilm formation is a major problem in treating S. epidermidis infection as biofilms provide significant resistance to antibiotics and to components of the innate host defenses. Neuronal transmitter stores of the rat phrenic nerve were labelled by incubation with [3H]choline. Release of [3H]acetylcholine was elicited by electrical nerve stimulation (100 or 1500 pulses, 5 or 25 Hz) or by high potassium (27 mmol/l) and the effects of the muscarine receptor agonist oxotremorine and the antagonist scopolamine were investigated. Neither oxotremorine nor scopolamine affected the basal tritium efflux. A low concentration of oxotremorine (10 nmol/l) enhanced and a high concentration of oxotremorine (1 μol/l) reduced the electrically evoked [3H]acetylcholine release. Abstract Background The role of intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) during sepsis is controversial, as different trials on IVIG have observed inconsistent survival benefits. We aimed to elucidate the possible association and clinical significance between circulating levels of immunoglobulins. Methods In a subset of 956 patients with severe sepsis and septic shock of the multicentre, open-label RCT ALBIOS, venous blood samples were serially collected 1, 2, and 7 days after enrolment (or at ICU discharge, whichever came first).
