Indian Yellow and Titanium White : A Material-centred Perspective on the Pigments Used by Artists Helene Schjerfbeck and Akseli Gallen-Kallela in the…

2022

This article presents the results of material studies focused on identifying and comparing the contents of the pigment palettes of two notable Finnish painters, Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) and Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931). The research methods used comprise energydispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) and polarised light microscopy (PLM). In addition, certain pigments have been identified in colour areas of the works using specular reflection FT-infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and Raman spectrometry. To support the results gathered using scientific analytical methods, archival research has been conducted in order to find notes and references to the pigments made by the arti…

Making Sense of Business Ethics - About Not Walking the Talk

2006

By using a sensemaking perspective, this article argues that it is not relevant to fully expect firms to walk their talk in ethical matters. Accuracy between words and deeds is utopia in a post-modern world, with chaos and complexity. Integrating diverse ways of doing ethical business across global regions rather creates legitimacy, trust and a good image among firms in business networks. So what is the role of the ethics code? The article gives examples from a case study on Stora Enso, where the ethics code has a certain strategic meaning, but where the CEO also states that the firm has to do what it says, and say what it does. In short, the article discusses a new paradigm which influence…

Warczeć, zipać, krzyczeć - czasowniki nie tylko dźwiękonaśladowcze i ich potencjał słowotwórczy

2018

The article is a tentative analysis of the word-forming potential for Polish not only onomatopoeic verbs. As the input material for analysis, the author selected 84 word-forming nests of verbs, taken from Słownik gniazd słowotwórczych współczesnego języka ogólnopolskiego (Kraków 2004). The selected verbs are the base for nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs. The derived nouns and verbs were divided into 23 semantic classes. The analysis of word-forming paradigms showed that onomatopoeic verbs quite regularly will derive verbs accentuating the beginning or the end of the action; verbs expressing intensity or weakening of the action; verbs naming reactions; there will also be nouns as names of a…

Long-term changes in pigmentation of arctic Daphnia provide potential for reconstructing aquatic UV exposure

2016

Abstract Despite the biologically damaging impacts of solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) in nature, little is known about its natural variability, forcing mechanisms, and long-term effects on ecosystems and organisms. Arctic zooplankton, for example the aquatic keystone genus Daphnia (Crustacea, Cladocera) responds to biologically damaging UV by utilizing photoprotective strategies, including pigmentation. We examined the preservation and content of UV-screening pigments in fossil Daphnia remains (ephippia) in two arctic lake sediment cores from Cornwallis Island (Lake R1), Canada, and Spitsbergen (Lake Fugledammen), Svalbard. The aims were to document changes in the degree of UV-protective p…

Sur-contrainte e possibili narrativi “Pierrot mon ami” di Raymond Queneau

2009
