AbstractChildhood obesity has spread worldwide, it is on the rise, starts earlier and is more severe, despite all treatment attempts.According to recent studies, weight stigma is a factor that can hinder the success of therapies. Healthcare workers, mainly paediatricians, need to feel the urgency of anti-stigma training. The use of non-stigmatizing terminologies and images in various areas (school, sports clubs, healthcare, media, society in general) can improve disease management.

Purpose. The relationship between astigmatic refractive errors and their associated visual acuity has been studied in recent years in the context of refractive power space. The influence of the axis of astigmatism remains a matter of controversy. Our goal in this study is to provide additional experimental evidence to clarify this subject. Impact of the line of sight on toric phakic intraocular lenses for hyperopia

We present a hyperopic patient with a decentered line of sight in whom the residual refractive error after toric phakic intraocular lens (TP IOL) implantation was improved by displacement and individualized treatment. A 35-year-old woman presented with asthenopic complaints 2 months after bilateral TP IOL implantation and IOL rotation 4 weeks later. Examination revealed the line of sight to be nasally and inferiorly decentered in relation to the center of the pupil. A more nasal reenclavation of the TP IOL decreased the coma, and the uncorrected visual acuity was 20/20. We conclude that line of sight should be measured before TP IOL implantation, especially in hyperopic eyes.

Ultrastructure of the Retina in Adult Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis

A 33-year-old woman died of biopsy-proven adult neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) or Kufs’ disease marked by fingerprint and curvilinear lipopigments in neural and nonneural cell types. She had never experienced visual impairment or shown electroretinographic abnormalities. At autopsy, her retina appeared intact without degeneration at the light-microscopic level, but nerve cells in different layers were loaded with lipopigments of the granular type. This appears to be the third ultrastructural study of the retina in a patient with adult NCL, a former one showing preservation of the retina, another retinal degeneration. Prenatal diagnosis of a rhodopsin mutation using chemical cleavage of the mismatch

Objective: Mutations of the rhodopsin gene are responsible for autosomal dominant or recessive retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The present study reports the first prenatal diagnosis performed on chorionic villi biopsy of a pregnant woman affected by a severe form of autosomal dominant transmitted RP, due to the Arg135Trp substitution. Methods: The rhodopsin gene was analysed by automated direct sequencing and, for the first time, by fluorescence-assisted mismatch analysis (FAMA). Detection of IgM antibodies specific for measles virus by capture and indirect enzyme immunoassays.

Summary During a measles outbreak, 112 serum specimens from 88 hospitalized patients were received in our laboratory for investigation of a morbilliform rash. These specimens (88 acute- and 24 convalescent-phase) were tested for the presence of measles-specific IgM antibodies by a capture EIA (enzyme immunoassay) using peroxidase-conjugated measles virus antigens and by an indirect EIA. A low-pressure reservoir for urine is created by antimesenteric splitting and side-to-side anastomosis of the rectosigmoid, the expectation being to obtain better continence rates and better protection of the upper tract than are achievable by ureterosigmoidostomy. Between 1990 and August 1993 the procedure was performed in 73 patients (59 adults and 14 children) whose mean age was 43.5 years. The indications were malignancy (n = 55), bladder exstrophy/epispadias (n = 14), trauma (n = 3), and sinus urogenitalis (n = 1). Behaviour of the phakic iris-claw intraocular lens (Artisan /Verisyse) during accommodation: an optical coherence biometry study.

Purpose To evaluate variations in the position of the phakic iris claw lens (Artisan®, Verisyse®) and the natural crystalline lens during the accommodation process. Methods We measured changes in position of the iris claw lens and the crystalline lens during the accommodation using optical coherence biometry (AC Master®/Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany) in 17 patients (28 eyes) with a phakic iris claw lens implanted for high myopia and/or myopic astigmatism.
