Numerical study for a new methodology of flaws detection in train axles

Train loads and travel speeds have increased over time, requiring more efficient non-destructive inspection methods. Railway axles are critical elements; despite being designed to last more than 20 years several cases of premature failure have been recorded. Train axles are inspected regularly, but the limits associated to the traditional inspection technologies create a growing interest towards new solutions. (STR) can be incorporated into asphalt mixtures in two different methods, which are referred to as the wet-dry process. The blending of recycled rubber (CRM) with asphalt has been used for years, and several manufacturing processes have been developed in Europe as well as in the USA. The use of a bituminous sub-ballast layer has been pointed out as an exciting alternative to the granular sub-ballast design traditionally applied in most railroad tracks. Laser ultrasonics for defect evaluation on coated railway axles

Abstract This scientific paper focuses on the application of an advanced non-destructive technique for an effective inspection of railway axles. The method pertains to ultrasonic techniques, which are widely used in the railway field. The experimental investigation was carried out on simulated defects tooled near the cross section reduction of the axle, in order to simulate fatigue cracks which, due to notch effect, can trigger crack propagation and axle failure. Spiral wave induced numerically using electrical stimulation and comparison with experimental results.

Experiments in vitro on a Microelectrode Array (MEA) platform show that electrical stimulation can provoke the generation of spiral waves in cardiac tissue. Nevertheless, the conditions leading to this artificial fibrillation state remain unclear. In order to have a better understanding of this phenomenon, a numerical simulation study has been conducted. The results obtained with a two-dimensional FitzHugh-Nagumo model proved that it is possible to create spiral waves by adding a stimulation current under certain conditions, which are made explicit.

Erosion and screening of tungsten during inter/intra-ELM periods in the JET-ILW divertor

Abstract Intra-ELM tungsten sources, which dominate the total W source, are quantified in the inner and outer divertor of JET-ILW. The amount of the sputtered W atoms for individual ELMs demonstrates a clear dependence on the ELM frequency. It decreases when the pedestal temperature is lower and, correspondingly, the ELM frequency is higher. Nevertheless, the entire gross erosion W source (the number of eroded W atoms per second due to ELMs) increases initially with ELM frequency and reaches its maximum at fELM ≈ 50–55 Hz followed by its reduction in the high frequency range. Impurity analysis of JET DiMPle pulses

Divertor monitoring pulses (DiMPle) have been run in JET from the C35 campaign onwards. They provide an opportunity to study the impurity contamination of the plasma when it is limited by different surfaces within the machine, as well as the longer term behaviour of the impurities. In these discharges the plasma is first limited on the outer wall, then on the inner wall and, subsequently, in the X-point configuration the outer strike point is positioned on the horizontal tile 5 of the machine followed by tile 6 and then the vertical tile 7. Spiral waves appear frequently in nature. They have been studied, e.g., in hydrodynamic systems, chemical reactions, and in a large variety of biological and physical systems [Grill et al., Phys. Improved test of time dilation in special relativity.

2003

An improved test of time dilation in special relativity has been performed using laser spectroscopy on fast ions at the heavy-ion storage-ring TSR in Heidelberg. The Doppler-shifted frequencies of a two-level transition in 7 Li + ions at v = 0.064c have been measured in the forward and backward direction to an accuracy of Δν/ν = 1 × 10 - 9 using collinear saturation spectroscopy. The result confirms the relativistic Doppler formula and sets a new limit of 2.2 × 10 - 7 for deviations from the time dilation factor γ S R = (1 - ν 2 /c 2 ) - 1 / 2 .

Testing Time Dilation on Fast Ion Beams

We report the status of an experimental test of time dilation in Special Relativity. This is accomplished by simultaneously measuring the forward and backward Doppler shifts of an electronic transition of fast moving ions, using high-precision laser spectroscopy. From these two Doppler shifts both the ion velocity ? = v/c and the time dilation factor can be derived. From measurements based on saturation spectroscopy on lithium ions stored at ? = 0.03 and ? = 0.06 in the TSR heavy-ion storage ring, we achieved an upper limit for a [?2] deviation from Special Relativity of .
