Clinical implications of a rare renal entity: Pleomorphic Hyalinizing Angiectatic Tumor (PHAT)
2017
Abstract Pleomorphic Hyalinizing Angiectatic Tumor (PHAT) is a rare benign lesion characterized by slow growth, infiltrative behavior and high rate of local recurrences. Only one case has been described in retroperitoneum, at renal hilum, but not involving pelvis or parenchyma. Here we present the first case of PHAT arising in the renal parenchyma. A nodular lesion in right kidney lower pole was diagnosed to a 61 year old woman. The patient underwent right nephrectomy. Microscopically, the lesion showed solid and pseudo-cystic components with hemorrhagic areas characterized by aggregates of ectatic blood vessels. Pleomorphic cells were characterized by large eosinophilic cytoplasm with irre…
Mosaic-activating FGFR2 mutation in two fetuses with papillomatous pedunculated sebaceous naevus
2016
International audience; Papillomatous pedunculated sebaceous naevus (PPSN) has been described as a subtype of sebaceous naevus (SN), typically affecting the scalp and face. In contrast with Schimmelpenning syndrome, no cerebral, ocular or skeletal anomalies have hitherto been reported. We report two unrelated fetuses with PPSN, one with large pink exophytic tumours, the other with minor features but similar microscopic findings. We performed whole-exome sequencing in affected skin tissue from fetus 1, which identified a postzygotic de novo FGFR2 c.1144T>C (p.Cys382Arg) mutation in 34[middle dot]6% of reads which was absent in the parents' blood. Targeted deep sequencing of FGFR2 confirmed i…
Actinin-4 splice variant - a complementary diagnostic and prognostic marker of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms.
2019
Introduction: For pathological diagnosis of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (pNENs) the routinely used immunohistochemical markers are chromogranin A (CgA) and synaptophysin (Syn). Their ability as prognostic markers is not well established. A splice variant of actinin-4 (Actn-4sv) was recently found to be an excellent biomarker of neuroendocrine neoplasms of the lung. We aimed to investigate the expression of Actn-4sv in pNENs and evaluate its quality as a biomarker of pNENs. Methods: Paraffin-embedded and frozen tissues specimens from 122 pNENs were analyzed. Western blots were performed to prove and compare the relative amount of Actn-4sv expression in pNENs tissue homogenates. For c…
Postpartum listeria meningitis
2020
Highlights • Listeria monocytogenes is a rare cause of meningitis in immunocompetent patient. • Pregnancy and puerperium are accompanied by a decrease in cellular immunity. • Pregnancy and puerperium should be considered as risk factors for invasive listeriosis.
Quality of Life in Individuals with Diabetic Foot Syndrome.
2020
Background and Objective: Diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) is a common long-term complication of diabetes mellitus. DFS has recently been associated with adverse effects that could further impair the quality of life of diabetic patients, and increase the social and economic burden, morbidity, and premature mortality of the disease. The main physio-pathological basis of DFS is due to diabetesinduced neuropathy and angiopathy in the lower limbs and feet. Patients diagnosed with DFS must significantly modify their daily habits in order to cope with signs and symptoms of DFS and this can alter their quality of life. The objective of this review is to summarize the evidence regarding the economic, …
Autoimmune polyglandular diseases.
2019
Autoimmune polyglandular diseases (APD) are defined as the presence of two autoimmune -induced endocrine failures. With respect to the significant morbidity and potential mortality of APD, the diagnostic objective is to detect APD at an early stage, with the advantage of less frequent complications, effective therapy and better prognosis. This requires that patients at risk be regularly screened for subclinical endocrinopathies prior to clinical manifestation. Regarding the time interval between manifestation of first and further endocrinopathies, regular and long-term follow-up is warranted. Quality of life and psychosocial status are poor in APD patients and involved relatives. Familial c…
Incidence, Diagnosis, and Outcome of Acquired Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (aTTP): A Nationwide Survey By the Spanish Apheresis Group
2019
Introduction: Acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (aTTP) is a rare disease characterized by a severe deficiency of the enzymatic activity of ADAMTS13 caused by autoantibodies, with an incidence of 3-4 x106inhabitants per year according to the few published data available. Accurate estimates of the incidence of aTTP are important to assess the resources required for current treatments and to anticipate the need to develop new treatments. The aim of this study was to determine the actualincidence of aTTP in Spain, as well as its diagnosis, management, and associated complications. Material and methods:A cross-sectional surveywascarried out among hematologists working in Spanish hospi…
Mathematical model of T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma: disease, treatment, cure or relapse of a virtual cohort of patients
2017
International audience; T lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) is a rare type of lymphoma with a good prognosis with a remission rate of 85%. Patients can be completely cured or can relapse during or after a 2-year treatment. Relapses usually occur early after the remission of the acute phase. The median time of relapse is equal to 1 year, after the occurrence of complete remission (range 0.2–5.9 years) (Uyttebroeck et al., 2008). It can be assumed that patients may be treated longer than necessary with undue toxicity. The aim of our model was to investigate whether the duration of the maintenance therapy could be reduced without increasing the risk of relapses and to determine the minimum treatm…
CXCL5, CXCL8, and CXCL10 regulation by bacteria and mechanical forces in periodontium.
2021
Made available in DSpace on 2021-06-25T10:46:01Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-03-01 Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the expressions of CXCL5, CXCL8, and CXCL10 in periodontal cells and tissues in response to microbial signals and/or biomechanical forces. Methods: Human gingival biopsies from inflamed and healthy sites were used to examine the chemokine expressions and protein levels by real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry. The chemokines were also investigated in gingival biopsies from rats submitted to experimental periodontitis and/or tooth movement. Furthermore, chemokine levels were determined in human periodontal fibroblasts stimulated…
Bioactive extracts from persimmon waste: influence of extraction conditions and ripeness
2021
In this work, a bioactive persimmon extract was produced from discarded fruits. A central composite design was used to evaluate the effect of different extraction parameters and ripeness stages of persimmon fruits on the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of the resulting extracts. Significantly greater phenolic contents were obtained from immature persimmon (IP) fruits. The optimum IP extract with the conditions set by the experimental design was industrially up-scaled and its composition and functional properties were evaluated and compared with those obtained under lab-scale conditions. Both extracts contained significant protein (>20%) and phenolic contents (∼11–27 mg GA/g …
