Getting Adapted? A Comparative Study of Qualified Turkish Return Migrants from Germany and the USA
2017
When we consider the international migration history of Turkey, we see the key position of the immigration of worker migrants to Germany that has been going on since the 1960s. Due to the waves of migration from Turkey to Europe, and especially to Germany, Turks now form one of the largest minority groups living in Western Europe who have migrated from outside of the European Union (EU) region (Sirkeci 2002: 9). As a consequence, beginning from the first period of migration, Turkish migration to Germany has been a subject that social scientists have intensively analyzed. However, most studies have focused on guest workers and there have been a limited number of studies looking at the case o…

Transnationalism and Settlement of Latvian Emigrants in the Nordic Countries
2021
The intra-European migration flows have fostered debates about the intentions of migrants to settle in their destination country or return to their countries of origin. Based on a quantitative analysis of survey data ('N' = 1391), this article presents a typology of migration patterns among migrants from Latvia in the Nordic countries. Using two dimensions—attachment to the destination country and attachment to the country of origin—the article identifies and characterises the following four migration patterns: (1) bi-nationals, (2) settlers, (3) footloose migrants and (4) isolated migrants who focus on their country of origin and are willing to return (separated).
Spanische Gastarbeiter in Deutschland: Stereotyp und Wirklichkeit
2011
Report WS6: Immigration and new inhabitants in the Gateway Cities
2012
It is in the last years that the planning discipline has fully recognized immigration issues as decisive for their role both in the urban studies and in the policy design. Nowadays, in Italy and Europe, the shifting social composition of the cities asks the planner for new cognitive instruments and new strategies for the interventions on urban systems. The present report resumes the results of the workshop “Immigration and new inhabitants in the gateway cities” which took place inside the IX Biennial of Towns and Town Planners of Europe, held in Genoa in September 2011. In the two days of debate, a number of Italian and European examples has been presented: the report underlines three issue…
Migrācijas ietekme uz starptautisko biznesu, Latvijas darba tirgus
2018
No otras puses…
Patterns of Transnational Urban Drift to Latvia
2021
This chapter extends the previous knowledge on the effects of migrants’ transnational lifestyle by studying residential patterns and life preferences of Latvian return migrants and arriving foreigners. We aim to explore the geographies and narratives from interviews with migrants who had shifted to more dynamic and prosperous urban/suburban locations. The contribution sends forward the interplay between immigration and return migration experiences by questioning: (1) What are the migratory flows’ geographical contexts? (2) How do they overlap and illuminate the process of ‘urban drift’? (3) How do the ‘urban drifters’ value their current life preferences and migratory experiences? Using sec…
“Practicing care in qualitative organizational research: moral responsibility and legitimacy in a study of immigration management”
2021
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide insight into the reciprocal relations between the caregiving imparted by immigration centre managers and the role of the researcher in responding to the care that is given by managerial caregivers. To enable this, we draw on a feminist theory of care ethics that considers individuals as relationally interdependent.Design/methodology/approachThe analysis draws on a semi-structured interview study involving 20 Finnish immigration reception centre managers.FindingsInsight is generated by reflecting on moments of care that arise between research participants and the researcher in a study of immigration centre management. We emphasise the importance…
