Between improvisation and inevitability: former Latvian officials’ memoirs of the Soviet era
2016
ABSTRACTThis article deals with the autobiographies of former Soviet officials that have been published in Latvia since the 1990s. In particular, it focuses on three interrelated layers of biographical narrative: construction of social identity, strategies for avoiding the stigmatization of collaboration, and comparisons between the Soviet and post-Soviet experience. The article contends that former officials in their memoirs use a pragmatic representation of the Soviet past as the major locus of their positive identity. Through this genuine representation of the past, autobiographers emphasize virtues that might be accepted by a post-Soviet neoliberal society.
Las frazadas en la memoria de la dictadura chilena : el caso de Jorge Montealegre
2020
As Pia Montalva (2013) points out, the blankets are the artefacts that best represent political imprisonment and its ambiguities: on the one hand, they embody the basic functions of the technology of power in dictatorship: they take away speech and sight, immobilise the body, erase the individuality of the face and the countenance, isolate the individuals from their environment,. On the other hand, they contribute to restoring a certain normality in an exceptional situation such as that of confinement and allow the uncertainty of detention to be accepted. In Jorge Montealegre's testimony (2003) about his forced stay in the National Stadium, written thirty years after the military coup, the …
‘White men can’t jump in a black basketball game?’ An exploratory investigation of implicit strategies of outgroup discrimination
2017
AbstractExamining the ‘natural’ athlete myth and utilizing the recent literature on cultural/social factors in athleticism and basketball, this study through survey research examines the influence of stereotypes on the impression formation of basketball players. The primary research question is to determine from a group of students the attitudes of basketball players in terms of how they evaluate white and black players in basketball. The purpose is to identify participants’ perceptions and their appreciation as to whether or not black are superior to white basketball players. The theoretical framework employed is articulated around the theory of social categorization and racial stereotypes…
Neurophilosophy in Zubiri’s perspective?
2016
The current intellectual situation is characterized by the vigour of neurophilosophy, founded on the new data of the neurosciences, in an attempt to replace traditional philosophical methods by the method of natural sciences. My aim is to show that Zubiri’s philosophy, which is also associated with the natural sciences, is a successful alternative to the pseudo-scientific and reductionist neurophilosophy, because his Noology is intrinsically connected to Neurobiology, especially through the concepts of formality and formalization, which are the basis for grounding a new conception of intelligence and reality.
Social media as a place to see and be seen : Exploring factors affecting job attainment via social media
2023
Job seekers can utilize social media platforms to actively search for job opportunities and also receive unsolicited job offers from recruiters and employers. Using data from a representative sample of Finnish social media users, this article studies both aspects of social media job attainment by analyzing how much individuals successfully apply for jobs and get recruited to positions through social media. Results show that the prevalence of successfully applying to jobs through social media does not differ statistically between socio-economic groups, but the prevalence of getting recruited to jobs through social media is greater within higher socio-economic groups. LinkedIn users are more …

Managing the liberalization of Italy's retail electricity market: A policy proposal☆
2020
Abstract Italy will phase out electricity retail price regulation by July 1st, 2020. Until then, residential customers and small businesses who do not choose their supplier are served under a regulated tariff named “maggior tutela” (greater protection), supplied by the local distributor at a price set by the regulator. We review the literature on electricity retail competition – with particular regard to its expected effects on prices, innovation, and customer engagement – and the conditions under which competition is expected to deliver benefits. We perform a Structure-Conduct-Performance analysis of Italy's retail electricity market for residential customers, finding two issues potentiall…
Limits and Criticalities of Predictions and Forecasting in Complex Social and Economic Scenarios: A Cybernetics Key
2014
Predictions play a key role in assuring the status of “rationality” in decisions. Nevertheless, in the field of social sciences and economics, predictions fail to correctly depict the oncoming scenarios. Why is it so difficult to achieve quantitative prediction of social and economic systems? Can science provide reliable predictions of social and economic paths that can be used to implement effective interventions? As in the notorious “El Farol bar problem” depicted by Brian Arthur (Am Econ Rev 84:406–411, 1994), the validity of predictive models is more a social issue than a matter of good mathematics. Predictability in social systems is due to limited knowledge of society and human behavi…
Complexity and Action: Reflections on Decision Making and Cybernetics.
2013
This paper highlights some theoretical and epistemological reflections about the relevance of action for managerial studies. These reflections show how the cybernetic paradigm of complexity management can be used for better decision making that unites knowledge and action in a comprising, dynamic, and evolving approach. Cybernetics can help to overcome the fear of decision making in the face of uncertainty in complex scenarios, and can be an effective tool for improving the viability and competitiveness of firms in the twenty-first century.
