Stolen innocence? Observance of the EU Directive on presumption of innocence by Spanish crime reporting

2021

This paper examines the compliance of Spanish crime reporting with the principles of the 2016 EU Directive on presumption of innocence, which aims at preventing the publication of information that might bias the public and the jurors against the suspect. A content analysis applied to a sample of 200 crime news stories published by eleven of the most popular print and online news platforms in 2018 reveals that the Spanish press coverage of crime is centered around the pre-trial and sentence stages, with little attention to the oral trial. The full name and the face portrait of the suspect appear in roughly one-third of the stories, but this overwhelmingly happens in news stories reporting on…

Selectivity of clientele in Finnish private early childhood education and care

2021

In accordance with the Nordic welfare model, the Finnish early childhood education and care (ECEC) system has traditionally been based on public provision and the idea of universalism. However, over the last twenty years the ECEC system has undergone market-oriented reforms. As a result, the share of private for-profit ECEC provision has grown significantly. By applying impression management theory, this qualitative research examines how representatives of private ECEC providers describe the selection and selectivity of their clientele and how they aim at managing the impression they convey through their descriptions. The study shows how three different mechanisms of selectivity are produce…

La imagen de la Concha de Oro en los impresos de la Edad Moderna

2020

For centuries, an image commonly associated with Santiago de Compostela (the shell) has accompanied the city of Palermo as well. Since the classical tradition and medieval literature, and then during the Renaissance and Baroque age, this symbol has been connected with other urban symbols (the rivers, the eagle and trhe Genius of Palermo), thus contributing to its historical identity, although in a rather idealistic form. Therefore, the expression «Golden Shell» has been used repeatedly in a large number of books printed during the Modern Age, with multiple meanings. The main purpose was to show those attributes linked with the city's landscape (wealth and beauty) within a specific political…

Avisos y relaciones manuscritos y impresos sobre catastrofes naturales y sucesos prodigiosos en Sicilia durante el siglo XVIII

2021

In the eighteenth century there is a large number of stories, both handwritten and in print, that describe extraordinary and unlucky events of different kinds: monstrosities, eclipses, or storms, floods, earthquakes, eruptions, etc. These stories, with respect to Sicily, take the form of occasional printed news, although sometimes they may be included in serials organized by different criteria (topographic/chronological/subject). Surviving documents in archives and libraries offer some opportunities to deepen the study of issues concerning the circulation and dissemination of news about the same event, their credibility, their formal characters and content. Very rare printed ephemera and ha…

Managerial Ability, Players’ Cultural Diversity, and Sporting and Economic Performance in English Soccer

2012

We use a large homemade database on professional soccer in England to estimate the relevance of managerial ability on performance and the managerial skills in keeping up cultural diversity. The team manager faces a set of very complex tasks. Not only he is the head coach of the soccer team, thus influencing sporting performance, but he can also have an impact on performance, by improving economic efficiency or by limiting the organization innovation in order to foster the creation of organizational routines. The sporting competitive advantage translates into economic and financial performance; therefore the manager is a dominant voice in the financial viability of the club, too. We also mea…

2015

Corporate communication in public sector organizations: the opportunities and challenges of a corporate brand orientation. Over the past thirty years, the New Public Management (NPM) has been the dominant approach in the public sector. Leveraging the idea that citizens are customers of the administration, the NPM imports management principles and techniques from the private sector in order to improve the performance of public organizations. After a short description of the main problems associated with the implementation of market orientation in the public sector, this article examines corporate brand orientation as an interesting alternative to market orientation in the public context. Ethical preferences for influencing superiors: A 41-society study

2009

With a 41-society sample of 9990 managers and professionals, we used hierarchical linear modeling to investigate the impact of both macro-level and micro-level predictors on subordinate influence ethics. While we found that both macro-level and micro-level predictors contributed to the model definition, we also found global agreement for a subordinate influence ethics hierarchy. Thus our findings provide evidence that developing a global model of subordinate ethics is possible, and should be based upon multiple criteria and multilevel variables. Monitoring of education system and the fifteen ages student achievement: analysis in the English-speaking countries with PISA 2009

2013

International audience; Education quality in developed countries is not just a question of public expenditure but is also related to educational policies (Hanushek and Woesmann, 2009). The classical economics theories (market competition) and principal-agent problem theory allow us to study agent's behaviors in education (Plassard and Tran, 2011). English-speaking countries have implemented the most advanced forms of control (for instance the NCLB in 2001 in US, and the Education Reform Act in 1988 in UK). Several studies (Hanushek and Link and Woessmann 2011) show that some kinds of institutional policies in education could have an impact on students achievement. However these studies don'…
