Beta-decay half-lives at the N = 28 shell closure
2004
Abstract Measurements of the beta-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei (MgAr) in the vicinity of the N =28 shell closure are reported. Some 22 half-lives have been determined, 12 of which for the first time. Particular emphasis is placed on the results for the Si isotopes, the half-lives of which have been extended from N =25 to 28. Comparison with QRPA calculations suggests that 42 Si is strongly deformed. This is discussed in the light of a possible weakening of the spin–orbit potential.
High-rate dead-time corrections in a general purpose digital pulse processing system
2015
The abilities on dead-time correction of a real-time digital pulse processing (DPP) system for high-rate high-resolution radiation measurements are presented. The DPP system, through a fast and slow analysis of the output waveform from radiation detectors, is able to perform an accurate estimation of the true input counting rate (ICR), a fine pulse height (energy) and shape (peaking time) analysis even at high ICRs.
Effective axial-vector strength within proton-neutron deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation
2019
We use the available experimental Gamow-Teller β− and β+/EC (electron-capture) decay rates between 0+ and 1+ ground states in neighboring even-even and odd-odd nuclei, combined with 2νββ half-lives, to analyze the influence of the nuclear environment on the weak axial-vector strength gA. For this purpose, the proton-neutron deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pn-dQRPA), with schematic dipole residual interaction is employed. The Hamiltonian contains particle-hole (ph) and particle-particle (pp) channels with mass-dependent strengths. In deriving the equations of motion we use a self-consistent procedure in terms of a single-particle basis with projected angular momentum provi…
Dynamical formation of a hairy black hole in a cavity from the decay of unstable solitons
2016
Recent numerical relativity simulations within the Einstein--Maxwell--(charged-)Klein-Gordon (EMcKG) system have shown that the non-linear evolution of a superradiantly unstable Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole (BH) enclosed in a cavity, leads to the formation of a BH with scalar hair. Perturbative evidence for the stability of such hairy BHs has been independently established, confirming they are the true endpoints of the superradiant instability. The same EMcKG system admits also charged scalar soliton-type solutions, which can be either stable or unstable. Using numerical relativity techniques, we provide evidence that the time evolution of some of these $\textit{unstable}$ solitons leads…
High-spin states in the neutron-rich A∼100 region
2009
Two experimental setups have been used to study excited states of neutron‐rich nuclei in the A∼100 region. Extended level schemes and lifetime measurements were obtained using deep‐inelastic and fusion‐fission reactions with the CLARA‐PRISMA spectrometer and the Ge‐array GASP respectively. Experimental information from GASP has been used to complement the CLARA‐PRISMA experiment. Time spectra have been used to measure the lifetimes of isomeric states. Preliminary results are presented for 89Rb.
Association of Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution With Thyroid Function During Pregnancy
2019
Key Points Question Is exposure to ambient air pollution in the first trimester associated with thyroid function throughout pregnancy? Findings Among 9931 pregnant women in 4 European cohorts and 1 US cohort, an increase of 5 μg/m3 in exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less was associated with 20% higher odds of hypothyroxinemia. Meaning The findings of this study raise the possibility that exposure to particulate matter might disrupt thyroid function in pregnant women.
Cytogenetic analyses of culture failures by comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH)–Re-evaluation of chromosome aberration rates in early spontaneous…
2001
Comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH) represents an alternative molecular-cytogenetic technique capable of detecting chromosomal imbalances by reverse fluorescence in situ hybridisation. As the technique uses genomic DNA for assessment it does not rely on metaphase chromosomes in the test material and thus circumvents technical problems associated with tissue culturing. In the present study, we applied CGH to identify chromosome anomalies in 60 spontaneous abortions of the first trimester, that had failed to grow in culture. In 57 out of 60 cases CGH analyses were successful. The overall aneuploidy rate detected was 72%. Trisomy was the predominant chromosome anomaly accounting for 68.0% …
Imbalance of expression of bFGF and PK1 is associated with defective maturation and antenatal placental insufficiency.
2013
Abstract Objective Defective placental maturation is associated with restricted functional capacity and adverse perinatal fetal outcomes. The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of the role of mRNA expression of various angiogenic factors in placental maturation defects. Study design We examined the mRNA expression patterns of prokineticin 1 (PK1), its receptors (PKRs), basic-fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and placental growth factor (PlGF) in tissue from third-trimester placentae that exhibited delayed or accelerated villous maturation. Results The expression of PK1 and PKR2 was elevated in placental tissue exhibiting accelerated maturati…
Quarry limestone dust as fine aggregate for concrete
2018
In quarrying activities, rock is extracted and transformed into aggregate of various sizes for civil engineering applications. In this process waste fine aggregates (dust waste) are generated. The disposal of this type of waste is a further cost in the extraction process, but also a possible cause of environmental pollution (e.g. leaching into water reserves, atmospheric pollution as a result of small particles causing respiratory diseases or deposited on plants disrupting photosynthesis, affecting aquatic habitats, etc.). A strategy for the effective recycling of quarry dust does not only reduce waste generation and disposal, but also addresses protection of the environment. The Italian qu…
TPEN: A Triple-foil differential Plunger for lifetime measurements of excited states in Exotic Nuclei
2019
Abstract A Triple-foil differential Plunger for Exotic Nuclei (TPEN) has been developed to measure the lifetimes of excited states in nuclei with small production cross-sections. TPEN utilises one target foil and two degrader foils to make differential lifetime measurements: directly determining the decay function and its derivative at a single plunger distance setting. The direct measurement of the decay function and its derivative removes the requirement to measure γ -ray intensities at several target-to-degrader distances, thereby reducing the beam-time required relative to a conventional plunger with a single-degrader foil. This paper describes the commissioning of TPEN in the lifetime …
