Oxidative and nitrosative stress in the diaphragm of patients with COPD.
2007
COPD is associated with an increased load on the diaphragm. Since chronic muscle loading results in changes in antioxidant capacity and formation of reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species, we hypothesized that COPD has a similar effect on the diaphragm, which is related to the severity of COPD. Catalase activity was determined spectrophotometrically. Levels of 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE)-protein adducts and 3-nitrotyrosine (NT) formation were measured using western blotting. Levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) were assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography. We found that catalase activity was approximately 89% higher in the diaphragm of severe COPD patients (FEV1 37+/-5% predicted…
BMI can influence adult males' and females' airway hyperresponsiveness differently
2012
Abstract Background Epidemiological data indicate that obesity is a risk factor for asthma, but scientific literature is still debating the association between changes in body mass index (BMI) and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). Methods This study aimed at evaluating the influence of BMI on AHR, in outpatients with symptoms suggestive of asthma. 4,217 consecutive adult subjects (2,439 M; mean age: 38.2±14.9 yrs; median FEV1 % predicted: 100 [IQR:91.88-107.97] and FEV1/FVC % predicted: 85.77% [IQR:81.1-90.05]), performed a methacholine challenge test for suspected asthma. Subjects with PD20 20 20 > 800 were considered affected by severe, moderate or mild AHR, respectively. Results A total …
SYSTEMIC ARTERIAL CHANGES AND PULSE PRESSURE: DIFFERENT IMPACT ON RENAL HAEMODYNAMICS IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS.
2015
Objective: Renal resistance index (RRI) is used for kidney disease detection and prognosis, but it also appears a good indicator of systemic vascular changes in hypertensive subjects. Structural atherosclerotic damage, arterial stiffness and pulse pressure may interact each other, and the relationship between intrarenal haemodynamics and systemic vascular alterations has been widely investigated. However, the independent impact of all these parameters on renal haemodynamics and the mechanisms by which they affect renal vasculature remain to be clarified. Design and method: We enrolled 463 hypertensive patients (30–70 years) with normal renal function (group 0; n = 280) and with chronic kidn…
ASSOCIATION OF RENAL RESISTIVE INDEX WITH AORTIC PULSE WAVE VELOCITY IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS.
2013
The assessment of renal hemodynamic parameters by duplex Doppler sonography has been used for many years as a diagnostic tool in the daily work-up of kidney diseases. Recent data suggest that these parameters, especially the intrarenal resistive index (RI) may be also associated with systemic vascular changes and with an enhanced cardiovascular risk. However, conflicting data exist in literature about the independent association of aortic stiffness with RI. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between RI and arterial stiffness, assessed by aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV), in the hypertensive subjects consecutively attending our hypertension centre. We enrolled 264 subject…
Morse-Smale index theorems for elliptic boundary deformation problems.
2012
AbstractMorse-type index theorems for self-adjoint elliptic second order boundary value problems arise as the second variation of an energy functional corresponding to some variational problem. The celebrated Morse index theorem establishes a precise relation between the Morse index of a geodesic (as critical point of the geodesic action functional) and the number of conjugate points along the curve. Generalization of this theorem to linear elliptic boundary value problems appeared since seventies. (See, for instance, Smale (1965) [12], Uhlenbeck (1973) [15] and Simons (1968) [11] among others.) The aim of this paper is to prove a Morse–Smale index theorem for a second order self-adjoint el…

UV Index Experimental Values During the Years 2000 and 2001 from the Spanish Broadband UV-B Radiometric Network¶
2007
An analysis is made of experimental ultraviolet erythemal solar radiation data measured during the years 2000 and 2001 by the Spanish UV-B radiation evaluation and prediction network. This network consists of 16 Robertson-Berger type pyranometers for evaluating solar erythemal radiation and five Brewer spectroradiometers for evaluating the stratospheric ozone. On the basis of these data the Ultraviolet Index (UVI) was evaluated for the measuring stations that are located either in coastal regions or in the more densely populated regions inland on the Iberian Peninsula. It has been checked that in most cases the maximum irradiance values corresponded to solar noon, although there were except…
High quality nano-patterned thin films of the coordination compound {Fe(pyrazine)[Pt(CN)4]} deposited layer-by-layer
2011
International audience; An optimised procedure was developed for the layer-by-layer deposition of the Hofmann clathrate-like coordination compound {Fe(pyrazine)[Pt(CN)4]} either as continuous or as nano-patterned thin films. Characterization of the thickness and topography of the thin films by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, which also yields the layer's refractive index and losses, are reported. We found that the films are of good optical quality and the results of both AFM and SPR experiments are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of the films thicknesses.
Synthesis and electronic aspects of tetrahydrobenzothienopyrimidine derivatives
2015
Abstract The chemistry of thiophenes, pyrimidines, triazolopyrimidines and benzothiophenes has drawn much attention because of their biological activities. Their interesting properties are connected with their complex π-electron delocalisation effects. Herein the synthesis, crystal and molecular structures at 100 K and DFT calculated structures of three tetrahydrobenzothienopyrimidine derivatives are reported i.e. 4-hydrazino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro[1]benzothieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine which was a substrate for 2-phenyl-8,9,10,11-tetrahydro[1]benzothieno[3,2-e][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidine and 3-methyl-9,10,11,12-tetrahydro-2H-[1]benzothieno[2′,3′:4,5]pyrimido[1,6-b][1,2,4]triazin-2-one. Moreover t…
