Effects of COVID-19 on Business Models in Romania and the Netherlands, A Digitalization Perspective

2020

Abstract The research objective is to study how Romanian and Dutch organizations’ business models have changed under COVID-19 conditions. The role of digitalization in adapting business models and business practices is studied. The theoretical background reviews literature about business models and their dimensions. Literature review investigated digitalization in Romanian and Dutch organizations. Research questions were: To what extent do Romanian and Dutch organizations use: • more digital methods in their offer to their clients now than before the crisis? • more digital methods in their business processes now than before the crisis? • more digital methods in communicating with their clie…

Development of the Happiness Index in a country

2016

[EN] In this paper, a Happiness Index is built through the Human Dignity Respect Index which is explained by Author (2014). The index is created using three main values: development, freedom and equality. But the equality is explained by solidarity, justice and peace. Then, the Happiness Index is developed with this five concepts. The aim of this paper is to obtain the minimum quantitative variables to explain these values as well as to obtain a generic formula, which allows measuring the happiness of a country/region. The term “generic” is introduced because this formula could be extrapolated to any country. The variables to obtain the Development Index are health (Life Expectancy at birth…

Alternative Definitions of the Strategic Group and Explaining Value of Differences in Results

2010

The relationship between strategic groups and firm performance has been recurrently analysed for more than three decades. As can be confirmed by this work, the evidence found supports as well as refutes the significance of belonging to a specific strategic group in order to explain performance differences. Hence, in this work we have tried to review previous literature to provide a reasonable explanation to unevenness found in the empirical findings. This aim obliges us, firstly, to review previous literature taking into account alternative definitions of strategic group proposed by studies rooted in different theoretical traditions, strategic positioning approach, resource-based theory and…

Natural optical anisotropy of h-BN: Highest giant birefringence in a bulk crystal through the mid-infrared to ultraviolet range

2018

The giant birefringence of layered h-BN was demonstrated by analyzing the interference patterns in reflectance and transmittance measurements in the mid-infrared to the deep ultraviolet energy range. The refractive index for polarization perpendicular to the c axis is much higher than the refractive index for polarization parallel to the c axis, and it displays a strong increase in the ultraviolet range that is attributed to the huge excitonic effects arising from the unique electronic structure of h-BN. Thus, h-BN is shown to exhibit a giant negative birefringence that ranges from -0.7 in the visible to -2 in the deep ultraviolet close to the band gap. The electronic dielectric constants f…

De Se as Variable Binding: On Context-Sensitivity in Utterance Reports

2020

In this paper I will be defending a view of de se attitudes according to which all the inaccuracies attributed to Kaplan’s Logic of Demonstratives having to do with the nature of de se attitude reports follow a single pattern: they are argued to correspond to bound uses of the variables contributed by the pronouns. I will argue that a traditional view of propositions suffices for dealing with these phenomena from a linguistic point of view.

Risk aversion connectedness in five European countries

2018

Abstract In this paper we compute an aggregate index of risk aversion and indices of vulnerability and the contribution to systemic risk aversion for five European countries. The variance risk premium proxies risk aversion. The contribution to the literature is twofold. First, this is the first study estimating not only the common component, but also indices of directional connectedness among variance risk premia. Second, it is the first to estimate the interconnections by means of a FIVAR model, in order to account for long memory. Our analysis indicates measures of total and directional connectedness unlike those that would be obtained with the use of a short memory VAR. These differences…

Dopamine agonist administration causes a reduction in endometrial implants through modulation of angiogenesis in experimentally induced endometriosis

2009

Survival of newly implanted retrograde-shed endometrial tissue during menstruation in an ectopic location requires an adequate blood supply. This suggests that angiogenesis is a prerequisite for the development of endometriosis and that its inhibition may be a target for preventing development. Previous studies have shown that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a heparin-binding glycoprotein, has an essential role in angiogenesis. The main regulatory factor for angiogenesis appears to be binding of VEGF to its type-2 receptor (VEGFR-2). Cabergoline (Cb2) and other dopamine agonists promote endocytosis of the VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) in endothelial cells, thereby preventing VEGF-VEG…

Kawasaki disease in Sicily: clinical description and markers of disease severity

2016

Background: Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systemic vasculitis of small and middle size arteries; 15-25 % of untreated patients and 5 % of patients treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) develop coronary artery lesions (CAL). Many studies tried to find the most effective treatment in the management of resistant KD and to select the risk factors for CAL. Our data are assessed on children from west Sicily, characterized by a genetic heterogeneity. Methods: We studied the clinical data of 70 KD Sicilian children (36 males: 51 %; 34 females: 49 %), analysed retrospectively, including: demographic and laboratory parameters; echocardiographic findings at diagnosis, at 2, 6 and 8 weeks,…

Practical Implementation of a Synchronous PWM Strategy for Low Switching Frequency FOC of im Drives with ATSAM3X8E Microcontroller

2021

This paper presents a practical implementation of synchronous PWM modulation algorithm for an induction motor field oriented control powered by a DC/AC inverter and implemented on a low-cost microcontroller, the ATSAM3X8E. In particular, a simple algorithm, capable to calculate automatically an optimized set of frequency modulation indexes will be presented. Hysteresis bands are also introduced in the algorithm in order to avoid multiple changeovers during modulation index transitions. Experimental tests and their results will be shown and discussed, highlighting the benefits of the present algorithm, such as reduction of current harmonic content, reduction of current ripple and, consequent…
