From Land Reform to Hyperinflation: The Zimbabwean Experience of 1997-2008

2018

This article has for objective to contribute to the understanding of the Zimbabwean hyperinflation. The agrarian reform announced in November, 1997 is at the origin of this hyperinflation. This led to a massive outflow of capital and a disruption in the production that cause over several years the degradation of the foreign accounts, and a trend depreciation of the Zimbabwean dollar. The depreciation, via the increase of the costs in the import, cause the strong increase in prices. The long-lasting increase in prices have, subsequently, lead practice of price indexation on the foreign exchange rate. These phenomena of indexation not only fed the inflationary process, but also led to the col…

A strong electroweak phase transition from the inflaton field

2016

We study a singlet scalar extension of the Standard Model. The singlet scalar is coupled non-minimally to gravity and assumed to drive inflation, and also couple sufficiently strongly with the SM Higgs field in order to provide for a strong first order electroweak phase transition. Requiring the model to describe inflation successfully, be compatible with the LHC data, and yield a strong first order electroweak phase transition, we identify the regions of the parameter space where the model is viable. We also include a singlet fermion with scalar coupling to the singlet scalar to probe the sensitivity of the constraints on additional degrees of freedom and their couplings in the singlet sec…

What is next for the Washington consensus? The fifteenth anniversary, 1989-2004.

2004

Winter2004/2005, Vol. 27 Issue 2, p, 7p; (AN 15818079); International audience; The article reports on the fifteenth anniversary of the Washington consensus with special focus on the past fifteen years accomplishments. Washington consensus was promulgated in 1989. In the past fifteen years, the United States saw some impressive growth with strong employment, low inflation, and high productivity gains, while emerging countries were hit by a string of financial crises. It states that the economic performance of developing countries in the past 15 years is disappointing at best, alarming at worst. It talks about the contributions of globalization in redefining the international currency stage.…

Persistence in complex systems

2022

Persistence is an important characteristic of many complex systems in nature, related to how long the system remains at a certain state before changing to a different one. The study of complex systems' persistence involves different definitions and uses different techniques, depending on whether short-term or long-term persistence is considered. In this paper we discuss the most important definitions, concepts, methods, literature and latest results on persistence in complex systems. Firstly, the most used definitions of persistence in short-term and long-term cases are presented. The most relevant methods to characterize persistence are then discussed in both cases. A complete literature r…

Czas inflacji balonu podczas angioplastyki obwodowej — jak to robimy?

2018
