UV-screening and springtime recovery of photosynthetic capacity in leaves of Vaccinium vitis-idaea above and below the snow pack

Leaf epidermal ultraviolet (UV)-screening by flavonols responds to solar radiation, perceived in part through increased ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation, and is a candidate trait to provide cross-photoprotection. Effects of peroxidizing herbicides on protoporphyrin IX levels in non-chlorophyllous soybean cell culture

Abstract The mode of action of 16 peroxidizing herbicides belonging to four different families (diphenyl ethers, oxadiazon, pyridine derivatives, and pyrazole derivatives) has been studied in nonchlorophyllous soybean cell cultures. Whenever possible, we have compared active and inactive compounds. Phytotoxic effects were estimated on the basis of growth inhibition, either in the dark or in the light. Protoporphyrin IX accumulations were estimated in dark-treated samples, using a simple methodology. Cross inhibition improves activity selection when switching incurs time costs

Abstract We consider a behavioural model of an animal choosing between two activities, based on positive feedback, and examine the effect of introducing cross inhibition between the motivations for the two activities. While cross-inhibition has previously been included in models of decision making, the question of what benefit it may provide to an animal’s activity selection behaviour has not previously been studied. Abstract Cyanobacteria are characterized by a very high tolerance to environmental factors. They are found in salt water, fresh water, thermal springs, and Antarctic waters. The wide spectrum of habitats suitable for those microorganisms is related to their particularly effective metabolism; resistance to extreme environmental conditions; and the need for only limited environmental resources such as water, carbon dioxide, simple inorganic salts, and light. Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolation from Spontaneous Sourdough and Their Characterization Including Antimicrobial and Antifungal Properties Evaluation

This research effort aimed at isolating and phenotypically characterizing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolates from a spontaneous rye sourdough manufactured following traditional protocols, as well as at evaluating their antimicrobial and antifungal properties as key features for future industrial applications. Thirteen LAB strains of potential industrial interest were isolated and identified to species-level via PCR. Most of the sourdough isolates showed versatile carbohydrate metabolisms. Inhibitory Effect of Azamacrocyclic Ligands on Polyphenol Oxidase in Model and Food Systems

[EN] Enzymatic browning is one of the main problems faced by the food industry due to the enzyme polyphenol oxidase (PPO) provoking an undesirable color change in the presence of oxygen. Here, we report the evaluation of 10 different azamacrocyclic compounds with diverse morphologies as potential inhibitors against the activity of PPO, both in model and real systems. An initial screening of 10 ligands shows that all azamacrocyclic compounds inhibit to some extent the enzymatic browning, but the molecular structure plays a crucial role on the power of inhibition. Laurel extracts inhibit quorum sensing, virulence factors and biofilm of foodborne pathogens

Antimicrobial, antibiofilm, anti-Quorum sensing (QS) and virulence factors inhibitory capacity of different polarity Laurus nobilis extracts against several pathogenic microorganisms were studied. Some extracts exhibited antibiotic effect against Staphylococcus aureus multidrug-resistant strains. However, all extracts (100 µg/mL) inhibited to some extent the biofilm of most bacteria tested (until 40% for Gram-negative and 76% for Gram-positive).
