A multicommuted flow system with solenoid micro-pumps for paraquat determination in natural waters.

A flow system designed with solenoid micro-pumps is proposed for the determination of paraquat in natural waters. The procedure involves the reaction of paraquat with dehydroascorbic acid followed by spectrophotometric measurements. The proposed procedure minimizes the main drawbacks related to the standard chromatographic procedure and to flow analysis and manual methods with spectrophotometric detection based on the reaction with sodium dithionite, i.e. high solvent consumption and waste generation and low sampling rate for chromatography and high instability of the reagent in the spectrophotometric procedures. o-Dianisidine: a new reagent for selective spectrophotometric, flow injection determination of chlorine

A flow injection analysis (FIA) procedure for the determination of free chlorine in industrial formulations and water samples is proposed. The manifold is provided with a gas-diffusion unit which permits the removal of interfering species and also the preconcentration of chlorine. The determination of chlorine is performed on the basis of the oxidation by o-dianisidine as a chromogenic reagent to a coloured product which can be monitored at 445 nm. 5-Methylcytosine (5-MC) is an important epigenetic modification of DNA. Abnormally high concentrations of this substance appear because of the hypermethylation of cytosine. Therefore, the measurement of the quantity of this compound in mammals is of great importance. Recently, we reported that several imidazolium-based zwitterionic sulfonates form complexes with 5-MC in solution, which can be studied by electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Flow injection biamperometric determination of chloramphenicol and related nitro compounds by on-line chemical photodegradation

Abstract An unsegmented continuous-flow assembly for the determination of chloramphenicol is proposed. The determination is based on the on-line photodegradation of the drug in an NH4+/NH3 buffer at pH 10.4 by using a photoreactor consisting of a 697 cm long × 0.8 mm ID piece of PTFE tubing coiled around an 8 W low-pressure mercury lamp. Photodegraded chloramphenicol is detected by photolytic cleavage of nitrite from the parent compound as well as by organic oxidizing photofragments, and their subsequent reaction with iodide ion, which is monitored biamperometrically. Oxidation of adrenaline and noradrenaline by solved molecular oxygen in a FIA assembly.

A simple and effective procedure is proposed for the study and simultaneous determination of adrenaline and noradrenaline. The fluorimetric determination of both substances is performed in a flow injection assembly and by oxidation of both drugs with the solved molecular oxygen. The influence of different parameters is empirically studied and the interpretation of the reaction mechanism is also added. The determination of adrenaline is monitored at 450 nm and the outputs at 520 nm correspond to the adrenaline and noradrenaline global amount; for both lectures lambda(exc) 329 nm. Indirect spectrophotometric determination of p-aminobenzoic acid in sunscreen formulations by sequential injection analysis

Abstract A simple indirect sequential injection spectrophotometric method for the determination of the UV-filter p -aminobenzoic acid (PABA) in sunscreen formulations is proposed. The determination is based on the reaction of PABA with hypochlorite in acidic medium and the subsequent measurement of the residual chlorine by using the well-known reaction with o -tolidine. Automation by flow injection analysis with Spectrophotometric detection of the determination of total amino acids and proteins witho-phthalaldehyde is not straightforward. The use of spectrophotometry, instead of spectrofluorimetry, and of N-acetyl-L-cysteine, instead of the conventional mercaptoethanol is advantageous because of the lower variability of absorptivities with respect to fluorescence yields, and the larger stability of the derivatives. Under adequate working conditions and with leucine as reference, the procedure can be used for the evaluation of total amino acids. The Narrative Medicine Approach in the Treatment of Diabetic Macular Edema: An Italian Experience.

The study retraces the healthcare pathway of patients affected by diabetic macular edema (DME) through the direct voice of patients and caregivers by using a “patient journey” and narrative method approach. The mapping of the patient’s journey was developed by a multidisciplinary board of health professionals and involved four Italian retina centers. DME patients on intravitreal injection therapy and caregivers were interviewed according to the narrative medicine approach. Abstract Diabetic neuropathy (dNP) patients often suffer from severe neuropathic pain. It was suggested that alpha-1 adrenoceptor (α1-AR) hyperresponsiveness contributes to pain in dNP. The aim of our study was to quantify α1-AR expression using immunohistochemistry in skin biopsies of nine patients with painful diabetic neuropathy compared to 10 healthy controls.
