Cadmium effects on development and reproduction of Oncopeltus fasciatus (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae)
2004
Newly hatched nymphs of the insect Oncopeltus fasciatus were exposed to various concentrations of CdCl2 administered in drinking water until the end of adult life. Significant nymphal mortalities were observed at concentrations above 30 mg Cd/l (corresponding to the LC50). The duration of the nymphal stages increased in proportion to the Cd concentration; at the lowest Cd concentration of 10 mg Cd/l, the median duration was significantly prolonged by one day, while at the highest concentration of 100 mg Cd/l it was increased by 10 days over the control group. The weight of newly emerged adults lineally decreased with Cd concentration, being reduced to half the weight of controls at 100 mg C…

Description of three new species oftyphlodromusscheuten from italy with redescription oftyphlodromus baccettiiLombardini (acari: phytoseiidae)
1978
Abstract Three new species of predacious mites from Italy, Typhlodromus ernesti , T. laurentii and T. pegazzani are described and illustrated. T. baccettii Lombardini, 1960 is redescribed.
Amblyseius fennicus sp. n. (Acarina, Gamasina: Phytoseiidae) from Finland, with a key to the A. americanus group
2012
A new species is described belonging to the Amblyseius (s. str.) americanus group (Denmark & Muma, 1989). It was collected regularly from trunks of old trees in Finland. A key is given including the known species of the A. americanus group.
Entry of Human Parechovirus 1
2001
ABSTRACT Human parechovirus 1 (HPEV-1) is a prototype member of parechoviruses, a recently established picornavirus genus. Although there is preliminary evidence that HPEV-1 recognizes α V integrins as cellular receptors, our understanding of early events during HPEV-1 infection is still very limited. The aim of this study was to clarify the entry mechanisms of HPEV-1, including the attachment of the virus onto the host cell surface and subsequent internalization. In blocking experiments with monoclonal antibodies against different receptor candidates, antibodies against α V and β 3 integrin subunits, in particular in combination, appeared to be the most efficient ones in preventing the HPE…
Formation of melanin-based wing patterns is influenced by condition and immune challenge in Pieris brassicae
2005
According to life-history theory, trade-offs emerge because organisms possess a limited amount of resources that they have to allocate between different bodily functions. Here, we tested whether there is a trade-off between melanin-based immune response and dark melanized wing patterning in the large white butterfly, Pieris brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), by activating the immune system of pupae and measuring the wing pigmentation of freshly emerged adults. In contrast to expectations, we did not find any negative associations between immune challenge and wing patterning. Furthermore, implanted and punctured male pupae tended to have larger and darker forewing tips as adults compared …
Esterase inhibition by synergists in the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis.
2010
BACKGROUND: Western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), is among the most important crop pests in the south-eastern region of Spain. Its increasing resistance to insecticides constitutes a serious problem, and understanding the mechanisms involved is therefore of great interest. Use of synergists to inhibit the enzymes involved in insecticide detoxification is widely used to determine their responsibility for insecticide resistance. However, they do not always act as intended or expected, and caution must be exercised when interpreting synergist results. RESULTS: Laboratory-selected strains of WFT were used to analyse the effects of the synergists piperonyl butoxide …

Role of Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and its secondary hosts in plum pox virus propagation
2007
Plum pox virus (family Potyviridae, genus Potyvirus, PPV) is one of the most important viral pathogens of plants in the genus Prunus, particularly Prunus persica L. The role of the Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) as a vector of PPV-M, and its role in spreading PPV-M, was investigated. PPV-M-infected peach trees were used as inoculum sources, and transmission to 15 herbaceous species commonly present in and around peach orchards was evaluated. The presence of PPV-M in secondary hosts after aphid transmission was verified by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction tests. The results indicate that Saponaria ocymoides L., Pisum sativum L., Trifolium repens L., Trifolium p…
A molecular study of Neophyllaphis varicolor (Hemiptera, Aphididae) in Costa Rica
2019
The genus Neophyllaphis (Takahashi) (Aphididae: Neophyllaphidinae) is composed of 18 species; however, in the Americas only nine species have been reported previously. A new species, Neophyllaphis varicolor Miller & Halbert, was described in 2014 in USA. Colonies resembling those of this new species have been observed in Costa Rica on Podocarpus spp. In order to determine if N. varicolor is also present in Costa Rica, we sampled Neophyllaphis colonies from Podocarpus falcatus and P. chinensis. Additionally, we sampled individuals from Podocarpus sp. in Spain and Vietnam. DNA of each sample was extracted and used to amplify and sequence the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and elongation…
