Narrativity and intertextuality in the making of a shared European memory

2016

The latest wave of European integration process, cultural Europeanization, includes complex processes, such as the attempts to create a shared European memory that would transcend national interpretations of the past. The cultural Europeanization can be perceived as a narrative operation: in it the EU, Europe, and Europeanness are given meanings and made sense of through narrativization. The article investigates the EU’s attempts to create a shared European memory by analyzing the exhibition narrative of the Parlamentarium, the visitors’ center of the European Parliament. The analysis indicates how the construction of an official shared European memory is operationalized through textual and…

The protection of cultural heritage and the role of culture in promoting European integration

2019

This article analyzes the legal protection of cultural heritage and the role of cultural heritage in promoting European integration. From a legal perspective, the notion of culture stems from the preamble of the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and is considered as a fundamental norm; however, cultural rights have been an overlooked and often ignored category of human rights for decades. The article thus aims at studying such a complex legal issue both from the perspective of International Law as well as under European Law in order to understand the way culture fosters integration within the European Union.

Integration of finite displacement interface element in reference and current configurations

2017

In the present paper the non-linear behaviour of a solid body with embedded cohesive interfaces is examined in a finite displacements context. The principal target is the formulation of a two dimensional interface finite element which is referred to a local reference frame, defined by normal and tangential unit vectors to the interface middle surface. All the geometric operators, such as the interface elongation and the reference frame, are computed as function of the actual nodal displacements. The constitutive cohesive law is defined in terms of Helmholtz free energy for unit undeformed interface surface and, in order to obtain the same nodal force vector and stiffness matrix by the two i…

Growth phase-dependent regulation of nuoA-N expression in Escherichia coli K-12 by the Fis protein: upstream binding sites and bioenergetic significa…

2000

The expression of the nuoA-N operon of Escherichia coli K-12, which encodes the proton-pumping NADH dehydrogenase I is modulated by growth phase-dependent regulation. Under respiratory growth conditions, expression was stimulated in early exponential, and to a lesser extent in late exponential and stationary growth phases. The stimulation in the early exponential growth phase was not observed in fis mutants, which are deficient for the growth phase-responsive regulator Fis. Neither the alternative sigma factor RpoS nor the integration host factor (IHF) are involved in growth phase-dependent regulation of this operon. When incubated with nuo promoter DNA, isolated Fis protein formed three re…

Probabilistic techniques for bridging the semantic gap in schema alignment

Connecting pieces of informations from heterogeneous sources sharing the same domain is an open challenge in Semantic Web, Big Data and business communities. The main problem in this research area is to bridge the expressiveness gap between relational databases and ontologies. In general, an ontology is more expressive and captures more semantic information behind data than a relational database does. On the other side, databases are the most common used persistent storage system and they grant benefits such as security and data integrity but they need to be managed by expert users. The problem is quite significant above all when enterprise or corporate ontologies are used to share infomation…

Network reconstruction for trans acting genetic loci using multi-omics data and prior information.

2022

Background: Molecular measurements of the genome, the transcriptome, and the epigenome, often termed multi-omics data, provide an in-depth view on biological systems and their integration is crucial for gaining insights in complex regulatory processes. These data can be used to explain disease related genetic variants by linking them to intermediate molecular traits (quantitative trait loci, QTL). Molecular networks regulating cellular processes leave footprints in QTL results as so-called trans-QTL hotspots. Reconstructing these networks is a complex endeavor and use of biological prior information can improve network inference. However, previous efforts were limited in the types of priors…

Integration of foreign trade and maritime transport statistics in Spain

2010

This article aims to contribute to improving maritime trade data by analysing the possibility of integrating in a single enlarged databank two different databases: the Spanish foreign trade and maritime transport datasets. The methodology adopted consisted of studying the primary sources providing data compiled in the foreign trade and maritime traffic databases, analysing the electronic processes used by informants and data collectors and examining the linkages between the different electronic messages involved. Once the links between the trade and sea transport documents and electronic messages were found, a solution for integrating both databases was envisaged. The main outcome is a new …

Deployment of the ATLAS high level trigger

2005

The ATLAS combined test beam in the second half of 2004 saw the first deployment of the ATLAS high-level triggers (HLT). The next steps are deployment on the pre-series farms in the experimental area during 2005, commissioning and cosmics tests in 2006 and collisions in 2007. This paper reviews the experience gained in the test beam, describes the current status and discusses the further enhancements to be made. We address issues related to the dataflow, selection algorithms, testing, software distribution, installation and improvements

Repatriation of Debt in the Euro Crisis: Evidence for the Secondary Market Theory

2013

The Euro Crisis has marked a sharp inversion in the process of the European financial integration and, more specifically, a repatriation of countries' debt from foreign to domestic investors. Yet the drivers of the financial fragmentation remain unclear. This paper investigates the empirical patterns in light of competing theories of cross-border portfolio allocation. Three main empirical regularities stand out: i) the repatriation of debt occurred primarily in crisis countries; ii) the repatriation affected mainly public debt; iii) the public debt of crisis countries was reallocated to politically influential countries within the Euro Area. Standard theories of portfolio allocation and hom…

A dynamic integration algorithm for an ensemble of classifiers

1999

Numerous data mining methods have recently been developed, and there is often a need to select the most appropriate data mining method or methods. The method selection can be done statically or dynamically. Dynamic selection takes into account characteristics of a new instance and usually results in higher classification accuracy. We discuss a dynamic integration algorithm for an ensemble of classifiers. Our algorithm is a new variation of the stacked generalization method and is based on the basic assumption that each basic classifier is best inside certain subareas of the application domain. The algorithm includes two main phases: a learning phase, which collects information about the qua…
