07. Social freedom in contemporary capitalism: A reconstruction of Axel Honneth’s normative approach to the economy
2015
This paper discusses two related issues, namely how to adequately describe the economy within the framework of a critical social theory, and how to understand the interrelation between the socio-economic and political dimensions of democracy. Concerning the first issue Honneth stresses the moral quality of social integration, and concerning the second issue he develops a conception of ‘democratic Sittlichkeit.’ In reconstructing these issues, both the promises and problems of Honneth’s work for analyzing and criticizing contemporary developments in the economy are explored. The paper concludes that the unresolved challenge for Honneth is not to succumb to a nostalgic return to 19th century …
The EU, the Nation-State, and the Perennial Challenge to European Integration
2020
This introductory chapter sheds new light on the increasingly complex relationship between the European Union and the nation-state—in its capacity as EU member state—at a time when its fundamental values are being called into question by prominent political currents. The chapter explores the concept of the nation-state in a contemporary European context and shows that tensions between supranationalism and intergovernmentalism are since long a defining feature of European integration. The chapter then introduces the book’s interdisciplinary approach which offers different disciplinary perspectives on how the return of the nation-state impacts the EU’s ability to meet the multifaceted challen…
Imigrācijas politika un tās efektivitāte Latvijā
2018
Bakalaura darba tēma: „Imigrācijas politika un tās efektivitāte Latvijā”. Pētījuma objekts ir imigrācijas politika, priekšmets – imigrantu integrācija Latvijā. Pētījuma galvenie uzdevumi: 1) integrācijas procesu izvērtēšana saistībā ar Latvijas politiku; 2) integrācijas iespēju analīze; 3) galveno imigrācijas politikas struktūru un integrācijas attīstības izpēte; Pētījuma teorētisko bāzi veido citu autoru darbi par migrācijas jēdzienu, imigrācijas politiku un tendencēm Latvijā. Darba empīriskā daļa balstās uz esošo pētījumu izpēti, statistisko datu apkopošanu, normatīvo aktu un politikas dokumentu analīzi. Darba rezultāti saistīti ar imigrācijas politikas vērtējumu 8 integrācijas jomās: dar…
Analysis of negative-resistance oscillators with piecewise nonlinearity
1977
An iterative method of solution of negative-resistance oscillators with piecewise-analytical characteristics is presented. The method allows the determination of the frequency and the harmonic content of the waveform as a function of the circuit parameters and bias of the nonlinear device. An application of the method, extended to the second order, for a polynomial characteristic limited by two straight lines is also reported. The results are compared with those obtained by numerical integration.
Trust in the European Union: What Is It and How Does It Matter?
2018
Bakardijeva Engelbrekt, Bremberg, Michalski, and Oxelheim introduce the concept of trust in the European Union by pointing out its elusive character comprising both interpersonal relations and attitudes towards organizations and broad-based institutions in society. In the early days of integration, trust was primarily connected to the European security community. Then, trust was present mainly among political, economic, and bureaucratic elites while public confidence in European integration took a vaguer form. Today, trust in the EU is challenged by numerous developments, ranging from the deteriorating internal and external security situation and terrorism to rising populism and anti-establ…
Post extractive implant: evaluation of the critical aspects
2017
Purpose Nowadays, implant supported prosthetic rehabilitation is a reliable procedure to replace compromised or untreatable teeth. The purpose of this review is to explore the concept of post extractive implant and the indications for clinical practice through an analysis of recent studies in the literature. All the main factors that could influence the outcome of this treatment will also be considered. Materials and methods Focusing on the extraction-socket healing time, three different implant insertion protocols have been defined: Immediate implant placement (IIP), Early implant placement (EIP), Delayed implant placement (DIP). The entity of bone remodeling can be associated with differe…
Exploring the Political Ontology of European Integration
2018
In this chapter, the author politicizes the ontological dimension of EU studies. He discusses ontology’s power to determine the real by analyzing some of its unformulated presuppositions and the links with knowledge and action. He argues that key European institutions like the European Commission do not change only because of institutional dynamics but also in relation to transnational interplays of differentiated agents operating simultaneously in multiple social spheres. Institutions and particularly institutional change have to be explained in the light of both new policy challenges and the preferences and habits of the agents making up these institutions and their surroundings. Such an …
Consistent treatment of relativistic corrections in deuteron photodisintegration in a one-pion-exchange model
1992
Using a one-pion-exchange model for the nucleon-nucleon interaction the relativistic corrections to potential and to the electromagnetic operators are derived in a power expansion of (p/M). All corrections up to the order (p/M)3 are consistently included. Numerical results are shown for differential cross section and polarization observables for deuteron photodisintegration. A sizeable influence of relativistic effects on some observables is found even at low energies. A comparison of our operators with the expressions of other authors is given.
The Magnus expansion and some of its applications
2008
Approximate resolution of linear systems of differential equations with varying coefficients is a recurrent problem, shared by a number of scientific and engineering areas, ranging from Quantum Mechanics to Control Theory. When formulated in operator or matrix form, the Magnus expansion furnishes an elegant setting to build up approximate exponential representations of the solution of the system. It provides a power series expansion for the corresponding exponent and is sometimes referred to as Time-Dependent Exponential Perturbation Theory. Every Magnus approximant corresponds in Perturbation Theory to a partial re-summation of infinite terms with the important additional property of prese…
Measuring perceived community support: Factorial structure, longitudinal invariance, and predictive validity of the PCSQ (perceived community support…
2007
Social support from intimate and confiding relationships has received a great deal of attention; however, the study of the community as a relevant source of support has been comparatively lacking. In this article, we present a multidimensional measure of community support (Perceived Community Support Questionnaire, PCSQ). Through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses on data from three samples of adult population (two-wave panel: sample 1, N = 1009 and sample 2, N = 780; and an independent sample 3, N = 440), results show that community integration, community participation, and use of community organizations are reliable indicators of the underlying construct of perceived community s…
