Cognition Is Not What It Used to Be: Reconsidering Usability From an Embodied Embedded Cognition Perspective
2009
Embodied embedded cognition (EEC) has gained support in cognitive science as well as in human–computer interaction (HCI). EEC can be characterized both by its action-centeredness as well as its roots in phenomenology. The phenomenological aspects of EEC could be seen as support for trends in design emphasizing the user experience. Meanwhile, usability issues often are still approached using traditional methods based on cognitivist assumptions. In this paper, I argue for a renewed focus on improving usability from an EEC perspective. I draw mainly on a behavior-oriented interpretation of the theory, the key aspects of which are reviewed. A tentative sketch for an embodied embedded usability …
Enhancing upper secondary students’ engagement and learning through the INTERACT online, video-based teacher coaching intervention : Protocol for a m…
2022
This protocol outlines a mixed-methods cluster randomized controlled trial (CRCT) in upper secondary schools that will investigate how video-based online coaching can support teachers’ competences in teacher-student interactions (TSIs) and thereby improve student engagement and learning. The intervention will take place over a school year with at least 100 teachers and 2,000 of their students. During the implementation and one-year follow-up, we will conduct an extensive implementation and process evaluation (IPE) to understand the intervention's effects on TSI and student engagement and learning outcomes. This protocol outlines the background, design, intervention, and primary and secondar…
Augmented reality as news
2021
If you are building complex, expensive VR today for the limited number of people, who get VR headsets, and [are] willing to scratch up on their heads to have the experience, experimentation is great, nice, but […] I think augmented reality is actually more interesting and has more potential for news. peerReviewed

Survey data for the validation of a perceived visual usability (PVU) measurement
2022
This dataset is part of a publication (Differentiating Perceived Usability from Aesthetics in Visual Experience – Validation of a Perceived Visual Usability Measurement). Data concerning confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) utilised in the measurement validation is freely available. Data for the CFA was collected via Prolific, an online survey platform. Thirty-three different surveys were created with the Webropol survey tool, all with different stimulus. Participants (N = 330) answered to the 33 surveys (161 female, 163 male, age range = 18-53, M = 25.8, SD = 7.0). The CFA dataset contains variables of Participant id, Stimulus, Age, Gender, Country, Native-English, and survey scales comprise…

Teacher-child interactions as a context for developing social competence in toddler classrooms
2022
The present study investigates the quality and variability of teacher-child interactions in relation to children’s social competence in Finnish toddler classrooms. The participants included 242 toddlers (114 girls, 128 boys) and their teachers (N= 42). The quality of teacher-child interactions (i.e., emotional and behavioral support; engaged support for learning) was observed using the CLASS-Toddler observation instrument (La Paro et al., 2012), and the average amount of within-day variability was calculated from the observed cycles. Teachers rated toddler’s social competence with the Multisource Assessment of Social Competence Scale (MASCS; Junttila et al., 2006) in relation to the toddler…

The quality of an expert teacher’sand a student teacher’s pedagogical interactionsin early childhood education and care examined through theCLASS lens
2022
High-quality interactions between teachers and children in early childhood education and care (ECEC) are at theheart of supporting children’s development, well-being, andlearning. Theaim of the study wasto examine the quality of an experienced ECEC teacher’sand an ECEC student teacher’steacher–child interactionsusingthe ClassroomAssessment Scoring System (CLASS). Furthermore, the study exploredthe participants’reflectionson their pedagogical interactions and theextent to which they alignedwith the CLASS framework. The data consistedof video recordings, written observation notes, and stimulated recall interview(SRI) transcripts. Thevideos were rated according to the CLASSmanual, and the data…
