Agent-Oriented Captology for Anthropocentric Systems

2001

Abstract Considering that anthropo centric systems are an adequate domain for captological approaches, and that interface agents are most natural interactants for the humans involved, the paper presents a broad-spectrum generic architectural framework to support developing flexible interfaces for industrial applications, based on synergetic correlation between persuasive technologies and polymorphic agents. The design space for agent-oriented captology is defined and several of its main dimensions are elaborated upon. The main mechanisms used are dynamic priorities, "flexible cloning" and fuzzy temporal windows. Some agent-oriented test-bench applications instantiating the generic architect…

The role of contact chemoreception in the host location process of an egg parasitoid

2016

Taste allows insects to detect palatable or toxic foods, identify a mate, and select appropriate oviposition sites. The gustatory system strongly contributes to the survival and reproductive success of many species, yet it is rarely studied in insect parasitoids. In order to locate and assess a host in which they will lay their eggs, female wasps actively search for chemical cues using their sensory organs present mainly on the antennae. In this paper, we studied the role of antennal taste sensilla chaetica in the perception of contact semiochemicals in Trissolcus brochymenae (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae), an egg parasitoid of the brassicaceae pest Murgantia histrionica (Heteroptera: Pentat…

Knowledge Acquisition in Conceptual Ontological Artificial Intelligence System

2009

The paper deals with active knowledge acquisition based on dialogue between AI system and its user. Presented method uses Conceptual Ontological Object Orientated System (COOS) to distinguish differences between concepts and to unequivocally process the input stream. In case of concepts, that do not exist in the system yet, adequate algorithms are being used to position them in ontological core. Separate concepts differ in attributes values or in sets of direct connections with other concepts. The communication aspect of the system deliver information that allow generating proper interpretation for userpsilas statement.

Guest editors' introduction: special issue on sensor evolution.

2001

Artificial life researchers, in their attempts to create life-as-it-could-be, have widely studied both the behavior of animals and artifacts. Early precursors of life-like artificial systems such as Grey Walter’s tortoises [4] or Valentino Braitenberg’s vehicles [1] were already demonstrating that ALife research is strongly motivated by the desire to understand and create life-like behavior and (neural) control. Creating life-like behavior in simulations or robots has increased our understanding of the design and evolution of controllers for artificial systems. Despite the interrelationship between behavior, sensors, and other morphological characteristics of animal systems, the evolution o…

An ontology for cognitive mimetics

2018

AI and autonomous systems are intended to replace people in several jobs. People have worked in these jobs being able to execute the required information processing. This implies that new technical artefacts must be able to perform equitably effective information processing. Thus, it makes sense to develop the analysis of human information processing in designing intelligent systems. This approach has been termed cognitive mimetics. This paper studies how it would be practical to gain knowledge about human information processing and organize this knowledge using ontologies.

Hybrid architecture for shape reconstruction and object recognition

1998

The proposed architecture is aimed to recover 3-D- shape information from gray-level images of a scene; to build a geometric representation of the scene in terms of geometric primitives; and to reason about the scene. The novelty of the architecture is in fact the integration of different approaches: symbolic reasoning techniques typical of knowledge representation in artificial intelligence, algorithmic capabilities typical of artificial vision schemes, and analogue techniques typical of artificial neural networks. Experimental results obtained by means of an implemented version of the proposed architecture acting on real scene images are reported to illustrate the system capabilities.

Combining a context aware neural network with a denoising autoencoder for measuring string similarities

2020

Abstract Measuring similarities between strings is central for many established and fast-growing research areas, including information retrieval, biology, and natural-language processing. The traditional approach to string similarity measurements is to define a metric with respect to a word space that quantifies and sums up the differences between characters in two strings; surprisingly, these metrics have not evolved a great deal over the past few decades. Indeed, the majority of them are still based on making a simple comparison between character and character distributions without considering the words context. This paper proposes a string metric that encompasses similarities between str…

Muons in air showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory: Measurement of atmospheric production depth

2014

The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory provides information about the longitudinal development of the muonic component of extensive air showers. Using the timing information from the flash analog-to-digital converter traces of surface detectors far from the shower core, it is possible to reconstruct a muon production depth distribution. We characterize the goodness of this reconstruction for zenith angles around 60° and different energies of the primary particle. From these distributions, we define Xμmax as the depth along the shower axis where the production of muons reaches maximum. We explore the potentiality of Xμmax as a useful observable to infer the mass compositi…
