We present a technique employing dielectrophoretic (DEP) manipulation of surface immobilized complexes integrated with a magnetic imaging platform based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond for the quantitative measurements of non-covalent interactions. The interdigitated microelectrodes closely spaced to the functionalized surface of the diamond plate provide a wide range of applied DEP forces for noninvasive manipulation of various molecular interactions, while the NV layer under the surface reports the unbinding dynamics. Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2-serovar E is a zoonotic clonal complex that can cause death by sepsis in humans and fish. Unlike other biotypes, Bt2 produces a unique type of MARTXVv (Multifunctional-Autoprocessive-Repeats-in-Toxin; RtxA13), which is encoded by a gene duplicated in the pVvBt2 plasmid and chromosome II. The domino theory of gene loss states that when some particular gene loses its function and cripples a cellular function, selection will relax in all functionally related genes, which may allow for the non-functionalization and loss of these genes. Here we study the role of epistasis in determining the pattern of gene losses in a set of genes participating in cell envelope biogenesis in the endosymbiotic bacteria Buchnera aphidicola. We provide statistical evidence indicating pairs of genes in B. aphidicola showing correlated gene loss tend to have orthologs in Escherichia coli known to have alleviating epistasis. The western corn rootworm (WCR; Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) is a major pest of maize (Zea mays) that is well adapted to most crop management strategies. Breeding for tolerance is a promising alternative to combat WCR but is currently constrained by a lack of physiological understanding and phenotyping tools. Abstract The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of endothelium-derived nitric oxide and prostaglandins on the contractile responses of isolated dog pulmonary arteries to electrical field stimulation and noradrenaline. Electrical field stimulation (1–8 Hz, 20 v, 0.25 ms duration, for 30 s) produced frequency-dependent contractions that were abolished by tetrodotoxin, guanethidine and, prazosin (all at 10−6 M). Noradrenaline induced concentration-dependent contractions with an EC50 of 1.85 × 10−6 M. The parasite hypothesis for sex is one of the many theories that have been suggested to solve the mystery of the widespread occurrence of sex despite its high short-term costs.
