In line with recent Conversation Analytic work on language learning as situated practice, this article investigates how interactants can create language learning opportunities for themselves and others in and through social interaction. The study shows how the participants of BigBrother Finland, a reality TV show, whose main communication is in Finnish, take up resources provided by English and use them for learning in their interaction. This interaction is characterized by an orientation to both the local context and the television audience, a mixture of activity types and translanguaging. Researchers such as Kumaravadivelu (2003) have been vocal in their opposition to the practice of cultural stereotyping. In the current study, Holliday’s (2005) model of Culturism was used as a theoretical basis. The purpose of this review is to critically analyze the state of intercultural communication literature. This review has three purposes. First, this review summarizes where the discipline has been, paying close attention to the discipline’s history and some key areas of research. Second, this review discusses where the discipline is going, with an emphasis on how the discipline is expanding into new contextual areas of research. Finally, the review presents challenges, issues, and areas for future discussion for intercultural communication.

Since there are many definitions of the word “empathy,” the researcher examines previous definitions of this term, how it relates to intercultural empathy, and then offers a singular definition for the purpose of this study. Darbā apskatīts kultūras izmaiņu atspoguļojums Gaujas baseina arheoloģiskajā materiālā laikā no vidējā dzelzs laikmeta beigām līdz vēlā dzelzs laikmeta beigām, kas aptuveni sakrīt ar vikingu laikmetu Skandināvijā. Izvēloties šādu hronoloģiju, iespējams labāk novērtēt Skandināvu kultūras ietekmi A-Baltijā. Aktivizējoties tirdzniecībai pa Daugavu, latgaļi savā kultūrā iekļauj ievērojamu daudzumu lībiešu kultūrai raksturīgu priekšmetu formu. Lai gan liela daļa šo priekšmetu ir analizēti to funkcionālo grupu kontekstā, šo priekšmetu izplatības kultūru starpā analīze ļauj labāk izprast to simbolisko nozīmi un sociālo funkciju.
Reconceptualizing cultural literacy as a dialogic practice

Culture and heritage are plural and fluid, continually co-created through interaction between people. However, traditional monologic models of cultural literacy reflect a one-way transmission of static cultural knowledge. Using the context of a large European project and augmenting the work of Buber with models of literacy as social practice, in this article cultural literacy is reconceptualized as fundamentally dialogic. We argue that cultural literacy empowers intercultural dialogue, opening a dialogic space with inherent democratic potential. Maģistra darba nosaukums ir “Klusuma loma starpkultūru komunikācijas kontekstā (latviešu un japāņu kultūrās)”. Šī tēma tika izvēlēta, jo jautājums par klusuma izmantojumu komunikācijā skar gan katru indivīdu atsevišķi, gan visu sabiedrību kopumā.
