Analytical modelling of force transmission in axially loaded RC columns with indirectly loaded jackets

Abstract Concrete and steel jacketing are common strengthening techniques for reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to axial loads. In the most of cases the external jacket is made leaving gaps between the strengthening layer and the slabs, avoiding to carry directly a portion of the load. In this way, the external jacket induces a confinement pressure on the inner column, and its beneficial effect is due to the increase of strength and ductility. However, shear stresses develop on the interface between the column and consequently, the external jacket can be considered indirectly loaded. Physical vapor deposition of Bi2S3 as absorber material in thin film photovoltaics

Abstract In order to investigate alternative absorber materials for inorganic solar cells, thin films of bismuth trisulfide (Bi2S3) were deposited under high vacuum conditions by the thermal evaporation method from compound material. The effects of the substrate temperature during deposition on the structural, stoichiometric, optical and electrical properties were investigated. Polymer based tuneable photonic crystals

We report on the fabrication and characterization of photonic crystal slab waveguide resonators which contain a nanostructured second-order nonlinear optical polymer. The combination of a photonic crystal resonator realized in a second-order nonlinear optical polymer allowed the detection of electro-optical modulation of light with a sub-1-V sensitivity. Furthermore we report on the synthesis of novel nonlinear optical polymers with large second-order hyperpolarizability and improved glass transition temperature. Analysis of static friction and elastic forces in a nanowire bent on a flat surface: A comparative study

ZnO nanowires bent to a complex shape and held in place by static friction force from supporting flat surface are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The complex shapes are obtained by bending the nanowires inside a scanning electron microscope with a sharp tip attached to a nanopositioner. Several methods previously described in the literature are applied along with author's original method to calculate the distributed friction force and stored elastic energy in the nanowires from the bending profile. Surface plasmon polariton propagation across a gentle silver step

Abstract Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are excited with light of wavelength λ1=632.8 nm on or near a gentle Ag/Ag step structure using focused beam, prism coupling and detected using a bare, sharpened fibre tip. The tip–sample separation is controlled by means of an evanescent optical field at wavelength λ2=543.5 nm in a photon scanning tunnelling microscope (PSTM). Phase defect inspection of multilayer masks for 13.5 nm optical lithography using PEEM in a standing wave mode

We report on recent developments of an "at wavelength" full-field imaging technique for defect inspection of multilayer mask blanks for extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL). Our approach uses photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) in a near normal incidence mode at 13.5 nut wavelength to image the photoemission induced by the EUV wave field on the multilayer blank surface. We analyze buried defects on Mo/Si multilayer samples down to a lateral size of 50 nm and report on first, results obtained from a six inches mask blank prototype as prerequisite for industrial usage. Molybdenum thin-film growth on rutile titanium dioxide ()

Molybdenum films were deposited at room temperature on rutile TiO2(1 1 0) surfaces having different stoichiometries, surface roughnesses and crystallinities. The film structures and compositions and the substrate–film interfaces were investigated by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Different substrate pretreatments resulted in markedly different film and interface structures. Under the growth conditions studied, no amorphous molybdenum oxide interlayers were formed upon deposition in contrast to previous studies. Microstructural and tribological study of Nd:YAG laser treated titanium plates.

Abstract In this work, the fretting behaviour of pure Ti plates laser treated with a Nd:YAG pulsed laser was compared to that of untreated Ti plates. Fretting tests were done at room temperature without lubrication. The contact geometry was a cylinder (bearing steel) on a plane. The evolution of both the ratio, μ = Q / P , between the normal and the tangential forces, and the Fouvry's energy criterion ( A ) were recorded as a function of the number of fretting cycles, N . International audience; Abstract In this work we compared the fretting behavior of pure titanium plates functionalized with titanium oxynitride surface layers, obtained by two methods: a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) method, reactive magnetron sputtering, and Surface Laser Treatments (SLT), under different mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen. The composition of the layers was determined by nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) and their structure was analyzed by Raman spectroscopy.
