Electrochemically shape-controlled transformation of magnetron sputtered platinum films into platinum nanostructures enclosed by high-index facets

Abstract A new method based on transformation of magnetron sputtered platinum thin films into platinum nanostructures enclosed by high-index facets, using electrochemical potential cycling in a twin working electrode system is reported. The controllable formation of various Pt nanostructures, described in this paper, indicates that this method can be used to control a selective growth of high purity Pt nanostructures with specific shapes (facets or edges). The method opens up new possibilities for electrochemical preparation of nanostructured Pt catalysts at high yield.

Molecular dynamics simulations of capillary rise experiments in nanotubes coated with polymer brushes.

The capillary filling of a nanotube coated with a polymer brush is studied by molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained model, assuming various conditions for the fluid-wall and fluid-brush interactions. Whereas the fluid is modeled by simple point particles interacting with Lennard-Jones forces, the (end-grafted, fully flexible) polymers that form the brush coating are described by a standard bead-spring model. Our experiments reveal that capillary filling is observed even for walls that would not be wetted by the fluid, provided the polymer brush coating itself wets. Effect of Polymer Length on the Adsorption onto Aluminogermanate Imogolite Nanotubes

This study evidences the adsorption of model nonionic polymers onto aluminogermanate imogolite nanotubes, attractive porous nanofillers with potential molecular loading and release applications. We resolve the underlying mechanisms between nanotubes and polyethylene glycols with different molecular weights by means of nanoisothermal titration calorimetry. The analysis of the results provides a direct thermodynamic characterization, allowing us to propose a detailed description of the energetics involved in the formation of polymer/imogolite complexes. In nature, mineralization of hard tissues occurs due to the synergistic effect of components present in the organic matrix of these tissues, with templating and catalytic effects. In Suberites domuncula, a well-studied example of the class of demosponges, silica formation is mediated and templated by an axial proteinaceous filament with silicatein-α, one of the main components. Technical artefacts exist so that people can use them to make something happen. Their capacity to do so depends on the functions and functionalities of the technology, which requires users. Technologies thus have to give users the ability to control them, and the designer’s role is to create the actions and work processes for which the artefacts are intended. This basic HTI pursuit is called user interface design. It applies technical interaction concepts to solve design problems. This chapter presents the overall principles and goals for the user interface design of any technical artefact.

A prototypal architecture of a IEEE 21451 network for smart grid applications based on power line communications

This paper deals with the development of reliable measurement and communication devices and systems and their integration on a prototypal network architecture for smart grid applications, based on the use of narrowband power line communications (PLCs). The proposed solution is presented and discussed in the framework of the ISO/IEC/IEEE 21451 family of Standards. Musicians--same or different?

In the neuroscience of music, musicians have traditionally been treated as a unified group, as if the demands set by their musical activities would be more or less equal in terms of perceptual, cognitive, and motor functions. However, obviously, their musical preferences differentiate them to a higher degree, for instance, in terms of the instrument they choose and the music genre they are mostly engaged with as well as their practicing style. This diversity in musicians' profiles has been recently taken into account in several empirical endeavors. The present contribution will review the evidence available about the various neurocognitive profiles these different kinds of musicians display.

Microstructure development during NiAl intermetallic synthesis in reactive Ni–Al nanolayers: Numerical investigations vs. TEM observations

Abstract Heterogeneous reactions leading to the formation of intermetallic compounds in nanometric Ni–Al multilayer system are examined both numerically and experimentally. On the numerical side, the reactivity of a layered Ni–Al–Ni system is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations, using an embedded-atom method (EAM) potential. The mechanism of nucleation and growth of the intermetallic phase is determined. Four main stages in the reactive process, which lead to the formation of rounded shape grains of intermetallic phase at the Ni–Al interface, are delineated. The genomes of multiple organisms involved in symbiosis are rapidly being sequenced and becoming available, especially those from the microbial world.
