Application of the 3-D boundary element method to delaminated composite structures
2013
A three-dimensional boundary element model for anisotropic solids is presented to study the fracture mechanics behavior of delaminated composite structures. The multi-domain technique is implemented to model the layered configurations and the cracks occurring at bi-material interface. The Modified Crack Closure Integral technique is implemented to characterize the fracture mechanics behavior of delaminations in terms of the total energy release rate and mode mix phase angles. Validating analyses, performed on different delaminated configurations, have shown the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Moreover, some original results are presented to investigate the effects of the stacking se…
Big Data in metagenomics: Apache Spark vs MPI.
2020
The progress of next-generation sequencing has lead to the availability of massive data sets used by a wide range of applications in biology and medicine. This has sparked significant interest in using modern Big Data technologies to process this large amount of information in distributed memory clusters of commodity hardware. Several approaches based on solutions such as Apache Hadoop or Apache Spark, have been proposed. These solutions allow developers to focus on the problem while the need to deal with low level details, such as data distribution schemes or communication patterns among processing nodes, can be ignored. However, performance and scalability are also of high importance when…
Aqueous phase/nanoparticles interface: hydroxypropyl cellulose adsorption and desorption triggered by temperature and inorganic salts
2012
The study highlighted the main forces driving the adsorption of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) onto clay nanoparticles with a disk-like shape (Laponite RD). Modeling the isothermal titration calorimetry data provided the key thermodynamic properties, which enabled us to discuss the microscopic aspects contributing to the energetic and the entropic changes of the polymer adsorption at the nanoparticle/liquid interface. We evidenced that the process is strongly enthalpy-driven and that the interactions lead to constraints of the HPC configuration at interface. The functionalized nanoparticles enhanced the polymer solubility in water expanding the one-phase area of the binodal curve. Temperatur…
Recent advances in smart biotechnology: Hydrogels and nanocarriers for tailored bioactive molecules depot
2017
Over the past ten years, the global biopharmaceutical market has remarkably grown, with ten over the top twenty worldwide high performance medical treatment sales being biologics. Thus, biotech R&D (research and development) sector is becoming a key leading branch, with expanding revenues. Biotechnology offers considerable advantages compared to traditional therapeutic approaches, such as reducing side effects, specific treatments, higher patient compliance and therefore more effective treatments leading to lower healthcare costs. Within this sector, smart nanotechnology and colloidal self-assembling systems represent pivotal tools able to modulate the delivery of therapeutics. A comprehens…
Design, characterization and in vitro evaluation of 5-aminosalicylic acid loaded N-succinyl-chitosan microparticles for colon specific delivery
2011
The objective of this study was to prepare NS-chitosan microparticles for the delivery of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) to the colon. Microparticles can spread out over a large area of colon allowing a more effective local efficacy of 5-ASA. N-Succinyl-chitosan was chosen as carrier system because of its excellent pharmaceutical properties in colon drug targeting such as poor solubility in acid environment, biocompatibility, mucoadhesive properties, and low toxicity. It was prepared by introducing succinic group into chitosan N-terminals of the glucosamine units. 5-ASA loaded NS-chitosan microparticles were prepared using spray-drying. As a control, a matrix obtained by freeze-drying techni…
Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the Initial Adsorption Stages of Fibrinogen on Mica and Graphite Surfaces.
2015
Fibrinogen, a blood glycoprotein of vertebrates, plays an essential role in blood clotting by polymerizing into fibrin when activated. Upon adsorption on material surfaces, it also contributes to determine their biocompatibility and has been implicated in the onset of thrombosis and inflammation at medical implants. Here we present the first fully atomistic simulations of the initial stages of the adsorption process of fibrinogen on mica and graphite surfaces. The simulations reveal a weak adsorption on mica that allows frequent desorption and reorientation events. This adsorption is driven by electrostatic interactions between the protein and the silicate surface as well as the counterion …
Characterization and biodistribution of Au nanoparticles loaded in PLGA nanocarriers using an original encapsulation process
2021
Due to their imaging and radiosensitizing properties, ultrasmall gadolinium chelate-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNP) represent a promising approach in the diagnosis and the treatment of tumors. However, their poor pharmacokinetic profile, especially their rapid renal clearance prevents from an efficient exploitation of their potential for medical applications. The present study focuses on a strategy which resides in the encapsulation of AuNP in large polymeric NP to avoid the glomerular filtration and then to prolong the vascular residence time. An original encapsulation procedure using the polyethyleneimine (PEI) was set up to electrostatically entrap AuNP in biodegradable poly(lactic-co-g…
EVpedia: a community web portal for extracellular vesicles research
2014
Abstract Motivation: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are spherical bilayered proteolipids, harboring various bioactive molecules. Due to the complexity of the vesicular nomenclatures and components, online searches for EV-related publications and vesicular components are currently challenging. Results: We present an improved version of EVpedia, a public database for EVs research. This community web portal contains a database of publications and vesicular components, identification of orthologous vesicular components, bioinformatic tools and a personalized function. EVpedia includes 6879 publications, 172 080 vesicular components from 263 high-throughput datasets, and has been accessed more tha…
Analysis of composite laminates with imperfect bonding conditions
2007
A multidomain boundary integral formulation for the analysis of composite laminates with imperfect interlaminar interfaces is presented. An imperfect interface refers to a zero-thickness interfacial layer across which displacement discontinuity may occur while interlaminar tractions must remain continuous. The displacement discontinuity is considered through a spring model in order to model the adhesive layer among two adjacent laminae. No auxiliary elements are needed to implement the imperfect interface since the spring coefficients, characterizing the different bonding interface conditions, are taken into account inside the assembled influence matrices. To assess the reliability and the …
Mutual information-based feature selection for low-cost BCIs based on motor imagery
2016
In the present study a feature selection algorithm based on mutual information (MI) was applied to electro-encephalographic (EEG) data acquired during three different motor imagery tasks from two dataset: Dataset I from BCI Competition IV including full scalp recordings from four subjects, and new data recorded from three subjects using the popular low-cost Emotiv EPOC EEG headset. The aim was to evaluate optimal channels and band-power (BP) features for motor imagery tasks discrimination, in order to assess the feasibility of a portable low-cost motor imagery based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system. The minimal sub set of features most relevant to task description and less redundant to…
