High brilliance uranium beams for the GSI FAIR

The 40 years old GSI-UNILAC (Universal Linear Accelerator) as well as the heavy ion synchrotron SIS18 will serve as a high current heavy ion injector for the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) synchrotron SIS100. In the context of an advanced machine investigation program in combination with the ongoing UNILAC upgrade program, a new uranium beam intensity record (11.5 emA, ${\mathrm{U}}^{29+}$) at very high beam brilliance was achieved recently in a machine experiment campaign. Abstract Organic materials have received considerable attention because of their large dipole moments and optical nonlinearities. The optically induced switching of material properties is important for studying the optoelectronic effects including second harmonic generation. Organic materials for photonic applications contain chromophore dipole which consist of acceptor and donor groups bridged by a delocalized π-electron system. Investigation of the porosity of silica and alumina with chemically bonded polystyrene

The effect of modification of porous silica and alumina with a copolymer of styrene and vinylsilane on the porosity of oxides have been investigated by means of low temperature nitrogen sorption. Only small changes of the specific surface area and of the specific pore volume were observed on modification of oxides with non-cross-linked copolymer. The specific surface area significantly increased after the cross-linking of the deposited polymeric layer while the specific pore volume remains almost unaffected. Abstract Chromic acid anodizing is important for the corrosion protection of aerospace aluminium alloys. Previous study has demonstrated that SO 4 2 − impurity in the chromic acid affects the film growth on aluminium at a voltage of 100 V. The present work further investigates aluminium and extends the study to industrial anodizing conditions (Bengough-Stuart (B-S) process) and to the AA 2024-T3 alloy. It is shown that SO 4 2 − concentrations between ~ 38–300 ppm reduce the film growth rate for aluminium anodized at 100 V in comparison with an electrolyte than contains ≤ 1.5 ppm SO 4 2 − , whereas ~ 1500–3000 ppm SO 4 2 have an opposite effect and lead to an unstable pore diameter. Touchless gestural interfaces for networked public displays

In the near future, we can easily imagine a significant increment in diffusion of networked public displays, as well as novel interaction modalities used in their applications. In the following, we present two of the main challenges related to networked displays we are dealing with, with a particular focus on touchless gestural interfaces: overcoming interaction blindness (i.e. enable users to immediately guess the interactivity of the display, and the gestural nature of it) and performing evaluations in-the-wild (i.e. outside any controlled environment).

The formation of the molluscan shell nacre is regulated to a large extent by a matrix of extracellular macromolecules that are secreted by the shell-forming tissue, the mantle. This so-called ‘calcifying matrix’ is a complex mixture of proteins, glycoproteins and polysaccharides that is assembled and occluded within the mineral phase during the calcification process. Better molecular-level characterization of the substances that regulate nacre formation is still required.
